One of the lovely effects with a shuttle is to use a different colour on the ball to the shuttle thread. How does one get the same effect with a needle???

Kersti:
One way to do this is to needle tat with the same structure as shuttle tatting.
Consider the needle thread to be the shuttle thread. Make rings using the "Ring and Thread" method (see Barbara Foster's books) INSTEAD of the "Ring and Chain" method. This means that rings (and their double stitches) are all made from the needle thread.
Chains then are made with the double stitches formed from the ball thread: the hidden core thread is the needle thread.
That said, there's a problem/opportunity involved: there will be lots more ends to hide as you cut lengths of "needle" thread.
Does this make sense? Good luck!

That is exactly how I solved the problem of making Nancy Tracy's (Be-Stitched) Tatted Christmas Tree since it is a Shuttle pattern!
Hi,
Here's what I do.. Use two long lengths of thread. Color L (left hand), Color R (right hand). Ring in L, then switch Left and Right. Chain will Easy if you have two needles. Chain in color R. You have to be organized and careful to keep them from getting tangled. You add thread as needed. Yes, more ends to hide, but one of the ends is already on your needle, so you just bury that asap. Anybody watch the video of Jan Stawasz, the Polish tatter as he buried ends? He used a short very fine needle and a pair of needle nosed pliers to pull the needle through the tatting.

I havent watched that. But I wonder if that would cause more bent needles. Though I seem to managing that myself even without the plyers

Easy answer-tie the two colors together-start where they meet. The right hand color is the anchor thread(hidden)Left is the knot color.switch when you want the color to change.Since you have to cut the thread off the ball-you need to add more thread regularly-but,the color change sort of makes it worth the trouble.
