Hi folks! My name is Jen and I'm new here, with a question. I'm trying to needle tat an edging similar to the one I've shown below. However, when I pull the second ring closed, instead of being separate on its own as in the drawing, it pulls up snug to the first ring and I don't get that little header of thread (see my second little illustration). What am I doing wrong? Help!
Thanks :)

I would guess you have made the picot to small. I am not sure from you drawing but it seems the picot is the problem. If it is the bottom thread that snugs up it may be that you do not leave any space between the needle and the ring when you start the next ring. you have to start a bit up the thread, so to speak. I am not an expert on needle tatting but from what I can see maybe you can get some help from what I suggested.

Thank you, I'll try it, but even when I made a big picot I had the same problem. Taking your advice though, will try again! ^_^

Maybe you can try and pull the rings apart after you closed the second one, just to see if the picot is stuck. I have found that this can be the case sometimes. Don´t give up!

If nothing of the above help I thought of another explanation. Maybe it is a combination of too small picot on the first ring and too much thread left between the rings at the bottom. The trick must be to get these two things to be even.

It just takes lots of practice...I agree with Lena it could be a combination of the two problems. Don't give up, I think you just need more practice.
This is probably a stupid question, but you are working with the thread cut off the ball aren't you, not with a ball a needle thread?

I would echo Mogs question. The photo shows a string where the thread is cut off the ball, and you start making stitches at the free end; thread going to the needle is used up.

Oh yes I did quite a few of those because I kept insisting on working everything from the ball LOL
