Another problem, I'm still using a shuttle pattern with a needle instead, in this pattern it leaves a small length of thread between rings, how do I do this using a needle, since there would be 2 threads (working with a ball) instead of leaving the bare thread showing do I just make a chain? thanks

I wish I had an answer for you, but I tat exclusively with the shuttle. Hopefully, some of the needle tatters around here will see this and have an answer.

Shuttle tatter piping up (so you know just how much my advice is worth in this context), I'd try a sample of the repeat using a chain instead of bare thread. Just to see how it looks, or how difficult that makes the pattern.

Hi Anita,
I, too, am a shuttle tatter, but there is a group for needle tatters that I am sure you would get a reasonable answer from.
As an administrator, I don't seem to have the ability to move your discussion, but if you ask your question there, I am sure they will jump on it.
At the top of the page, click on Groups, then click on Needle Tatters, join the group and ask your question.

Thanks for the suggestion of the other group, will go there, but did try the chains and they look okay, infact, like that look better then the bare thread... anita

When you are tatting with (on?) a needle, there is no shuttle thread. You work directly from the ball and place hitches onto the needle. Most of the rings in needle tatting are mock rings. Is this helpful?
Judith.

I actually know the answer to this one! I'm strictly a needle tatter, now to word it so that it will be clear as mud : ) To leave a bare thread....okay, say you have just closed a ring. Now instead of laying the needle on the ring to start tatting the next element (like you would for a chain to get that nice snug look) you place the needle away from the ring (on the ball thread). The distance will depend on how much bare thread the pattern calls for. Does that make sense? I hope so, if not, let me know and I'll try again. Out of curiousity, what pattern? The majority of what I tat is worked off shuttle patterns.

Its the baby card from be-stitched.com ... want to make it for my grandkids. But since I'm using the ball and have the thread on the needle also that still leaves both threads showing, wudn't it? I'm using 6 chains stitches now and like the look, but still would like to know how to leave threads bare....and gong to look at all the sites listed above when I have more time this morning...... thanks anita

In order to leave a bare thread you tat with needle and thread only, cut a length of thread from the ball to work with. You can't achieve the bare thread working off the ball. From my understanding rings made with needle and thread are "true rings". They pull up into a ring when taken off the needle. You don't have to "catch" any loop to form the ring. I will try to find the pattern you are working on.
