Any plans for a new exchange in the near future? Something simple that new folks can participate in? Since I have never done one, I am really anxious to participate, especially after seeing all the neat things you folks have sent and received!

Hmmm... how about making a pendant. Just about any motif would do, in any style or technique or color? With beads or without...

A pendant... that would be rather... smallish.
I'm going to hate myself since I need every minute for my baroque embroidery project at present but I'd join on this!

What if we had a Goody Bag Exchange! A kind of mystery exchange if you will. This could include anything you would like to add. A small bit of tatting of course (perhaps a bookmark, a snowflake or heart, or earrings or a pendant would be nice ideas) and then random goodies like items we've made, samples of thread we love to use, or even shuttles or patterns. Perhaps including items found in our state/country would be a nice treat too. I think not knowing what you might receive could add to the excitement:-)

I like the goody exchange---I'm not too good at anything besides bookmarks yet:) Maybe we need an"experienced" category and a "new" (or wimpy!!:) ) category! I do want to try one though!

No need to differentiate between anyone who is new or anyone with years of experience. We all start the same way and I would be happy to exchange gifts with newbie or um-- experienced tatter! It's for fun and experience of doing it - there's no pressure on anyone.

WHEN I was a new tatter I learned quite a lot by looking at the pieces I obtained in exchanges. For instance I saw block tatting done correctly by Martha Ess when she sent me her little parasol in block tatting. Receiving experienced tatter's work is definitely a good turorial to know how something should look. I always felt when I was new that the tatters weren't getting a fair end of the deal, but I did the best tatting I could at that time. So, I think it is important for us to experience one another's work. It really is beneficial. B
PS. If we do an exchange of a simple motif count me in! :>)

Ya'll (yes, I'm from the south :) ) are SO encouraging! Naybe after reading your comments I wouldn't feel so bad to join in after all! It would still have to be something fairly simple as I am still working on so many techniques. I'm still partial to bookmarks or a goody bag, like someone had suggesgted. I have another request also. One of our moms at the school where I work suffered a severe brain injury at the hands of an ex-husband. She and her mom come to pick up the child after school and I see them most every day. They told me that she loves butterflies, and wears a pin or pendant everyday with a butterfly on it. I would love to make her some tatted butterflies, so who can direct me to some links with quick and easy patterns!! Thanks.

I don't mind what level an exchange partner tats at. The fact that you have bothered to take the time and effort to make something and send it shows me that you care enough about tatting to be a worthwhile person in my books.
Over the years I have had pieces from a new tatter and then a couple of years later a second exchange from that person and have gotten great delight in seeing how far they have come along. In my mind the exchange is about friendship and goodwill - not how many things you send, how much you have spent or the fanciness of the piece you tat.
We were all beginners once and we were all worried that our exchange wasn't good enough. Just dive on in there - your new best tatting buddy might just be on the other end of that exchange.

I agree completely!! No new tatter should be afraid to participate because he/she believes his/her work will not be appreciated! We were all new tatters at some point:-) Tatters are, as a whole, a very supportive group of people who learn from each other and appreciate each other in our shared craft, and as friends. So no matter how long you have tatted or how perfect or imperfect your stitches might be, we are all learning and growing together, so dive in and give it a try:-)

I think exchanges are a fun way to improve your tatting by seeing in real life what other tatters are doing.
I've really enjoyed the exchanges I've done and hope to sign up for the next one.
If there's anyone out there who just wants to swap a motif or two, send me an email. :)

Just started training in a new area and with my work schedule and home commitments I just will not have a chance to design something and tat it. Sorry. Will do the next one. Not everyone can include gifts - some people have very limited funds and some people have limited time or availability of suitable things. The most common item to include is a postcard of your area.
That said, if you wish to include something else that's fine - but please, DO NOT expect anything extra to arrive!! We've had some problems in the past with a person who included some rather extravagent extras and then got upset that her partner had not reciprocated, however, the partner was ill and the fact that they had managed to create the (I think it was a bookmark) was simply amazing.
Some general don'ts, often to do with practicality or quarantine restrictions
- chocolate (doesn't travel well in the cargo hold of a plane)
- food in general
- anything fragranced
- cash
- seeds or grasses (even dried)
- wooden items, the recipient may have to pay for fumigation which can get expensive
- anything else that might provoke allergies - I'm personally allergic to gold and some types of silver!
- religious artifacts of any kind, unless you know for a solid fact that it matches the religion of the recipient
These should be fine
- plastic/metal shuttles
- beads
- picot guages
- other tatted items
- patterns (please respect copyright)
- sample of thread

artikaur

Thanks for clearing that up Kersti- yeah, I wanted to add a few small token items, nothing lavish or anything like that. Just some small stuff, like a postcard or a magnet or something. I just wanted to make sure it would be permissible, since this is my first tatting exchange, and I didn't want to break any rules.
Thank you for the suggested items!!!:-)...
Kersti
19-03-2010, 08:53 AM
If I participate myself* I tend to just send a postcard with the item. This is more often than not a product of lack of time than anything else! Also, I don't want people to feel uncomfortable or to feel that they should or were expected to send more, I'm aware of the precedent factor.
* Generally I don't participate. For normal exchanges by the time I've paired people up and sent the info I've often forgotten to include myself, and for things like secret exchanges I figure it wouldn't be fair for me to participate. I'm always dead jealous of you all tho!

My exchange contents really are limited to things that fit into packet envelopes (except for Secret Exchanges and Christmas Exchanges). a skein of thread, a pattern book, the exchange item, and a post card. I tend to go all out for boxes that are filled for a holiday exchange. Postage is dear, so I may as well get my postage worth. Plus I just LIKE giving things to tatters. LOL I DO send candy if It isn't a long ways to recipient; or, if it is dead winter (chocolate doesn't melt if kept cool). I always try to think about allergies to food, and other items and to respect another person's belief systems. I'm not overly fond of angels myself, but some love them That said, when I was gifted with many, many, tatted angels in memory of my daughter's passing ~ that was a whole different thing for me. Most people don't use hankies today (it seems) but I really like them and have one tucked in my prayer book and my Bible
I try never to overwhelm the person getting the packet and make them feel bad because perhaps their package wasn't as generous. It's an individual thing. So when you get one from me ~ it's because I kept thinking of things to 'stick in' LOL bj

hi bev--I just have to respond to your comment about people today not using hankies....how funny that was to me. While we were at our daughter's this week putting down her hardwood floor she came down with the sniffles. The next think I know she has one of her "vintage", (old, antique or whatever word you want to use) hankies that was more than likely one of her grandmother's or great aunt's! For all their "preppy" ways, both of my girls like the old hankies and all three of us keep one in our Bible. Seems as if I have a pretty big collection of them, from my mom, mother-in-law, flea markets, estate sales and a precious little lady from my church. Just had to respond, because like you, I too think most people today don't use those beautiful little hankies! I just need to get busy now and add some tatted edges to some of them!

I think people these days think hankies are unsanitary, because you have to hold onto them after using them. A lot of people prefer to use kleenex pocket tissues, because they can throw it away when they're done with it. I guess you can use a hankie when you're at home, and if you're out in public, you can use kleenex. You could also use the hankie to make a sachet- all you have to do is stuff it with something that smells nice, and then gather the ends, tie with a ribbon, and presto- you have a lingerie sachet!
HJ Hess

[Sorry for the "Yuck" factor of this post]
Hankies are nice as a decorative item. But I would not like to use them while in the throes of a messy, sniffly-coughy-sneezy, phleghm-y cold.
:crying::smcry:
Like so many personal-use items that way back in the past were washable and re-usable (sanitary pads, for instance), it is very nice that in today's world, one can use disposable health items like a Kleenex (or other brand) disposables.
In my personal opinion, frilly lacy embroidered hankies belong in the "always-carry, never use" category. I want them to remain always beautiful and clean.

I enjoyed your thread! My late Aunt Geraldine gave me all of her older hankies (c. 30's, 40's) and my G'daughter collects the OLD (my era) Vera Scarves and table dressings. If one thinks about it, using the nice old hankies is a good way to recycle. I had a number of the prettier ones framed (way back before it cost an arm and a leg) and had them as dining room accessories. The one I keep in my bible has crochet around it and was made by my late Aunt Dorothy (Colorado). It has been with me through my biggest losses and challenges. I keep it in the section of scripture that my long-time woman friend chose for her services ~ She passed with breast cancer the same year that I came down with breast cancer (I didn't tell her my diagnoses, she was too near the end to be troubled with that kind of news). Barbara was a very special lady who also loved vintage clothing, purses and shoes. bj

That is so sad gahorsley! I feel so blessed that my husband loves me and would absolutely cry like a baby if I were hurt badly. I think the butterfly is a symbol for her to fly free now and grow. The butterfly goes through a lot of changes before it becomes the beautiful creation we see. This lady is still in her changing stage now and will one day be another beautiful butterfly. Maybe the tatting community should shower her with anything butterflies... Hair clips, pendants, bracelets, bookmarks, mobiles,........What a great opportunity to create and use those little pieces of threads we just can't throw away.

Due to my AZ trip and Loyal's hip problems; mine will be a little late ~ but it will get there before the month is up!
Best Wishes, BJ

I will try to have mine shipped out before week's end. My DH has recently been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery this Friday. We have been trying to get things in order, and this has set me back a bit. I am nearly finished, and will post once it is sent. Kersti, should I contact me exchange partner directly as well?

Somehow this exchange is bewitchd... I fell ill during easter holidays and didn't manage to post mine before today... But it's on its way and I personally don't mind waiting a few days longer.
My pendant from Barbara came with matching earrings! in a tatted card. Such fine work deserved a special place. It fits neatly into a see-through jewel case designed for DVD's. Beautifully protected, and not getting tangled with anything else, it will be there ready for special occasions.

I have completed my pendant, have packed it and a couple of goodies, and it is ready to be shipped to my exchange partner! It has been such a chaotic week here preparing for hubby's surgery, which is tomorrow morning. I had hoped to post it today, but it will likely be Saturday before I can post it if that's ok. I think my parner will be happy when it arrives, at least I hope so, as I find it to be one of my better creations, and am quite pleased. I am fighting myself not to post pictures, but that would ruin the suprise!
Wanda, you're pendant is on the way! I hope you like it.

Hi,
I received my lovely pendant last friday...Thank you so much Alma Negrete!!!!! It is really beautiful!!
I'm glad you liked it. I wasn't sure if it was big enough but I wanted you to have something equally as nice as the package you sent me for the Christmas Exchange. Those wooden shuttles are 'teaching shuttles' so if you wanted to teach someone how to tat, you can give them as pair to take with them.

:thankyou::thankyou::thankyou:My beautiful pendant from Mercy arrived last week, whilst I was away. I will post a picture to the exchange group when I have got over my drive home, I arrived at 3.45 am after travelling for 4 hours. Mostly motorways with lots of large lorries not seeing little me.
There was also some gorgeous threads and beads to make matching earrings. A postcard of the Boll weevil, I must find out more them.

I am very glad you liked the pendant, Josie. It is amazing that you sent me as an extra the merry wives motif and I sent you the reflections as a pendant and they are both Mary Konior. I so enjoyed participating in this exchange both making to send and receiving. Such a pleasure of anticipatation.

Hi all..
is here no open exchange to join, or I missed thread for it?
Btw, I wanted to see your pendants, but gallery is available only for group members. Can I join group for closed exchange, or I can't see your works? ;-(
Thanks for answer...

Yesterday I received my package! Due to the plane chaos I thought I'd have to wait even longer for it, but there it was!
Thank you so much, Dale Marie! The pendant is so beautiful and matches with quite a lot of my clothing, I'm wearing it to the office today :D You said, you have good photos, so I'd be glad if you could post them.
Thank you so much for all the other goodies! The green mother-of-pearl sequins are such a beautiful colour! I never knew there was something like size 150 cordonnet still around somewhere. I will have to try this for some vintage patterns which ask exactly for this thread. And... even though all of you were so excited about clover shuttles I never managed to get myself a pair since I prefer bobbin shuttles. But the clovers seem ideal for teaching - which I usually do with a post shuttle since these imho are way easier to handle for beginners.
Last but not least the mints - I love mints of all kinds, always carry some with me in my handbag. I don't know this taste in Altoids yet, but I love the cinnamon ones.

Hi Frakira
Running an exchange is quite time-consuming and with the Ning nightmares coupled with my not being well of late and my divorce reaching the nasty end (which will have me busy for the next 2 months) I won't have time for a little while.
There will, however, be challenges coming up - look for those :)
In the meantime, yes you can join the group to see the pictures.
