Does anyone have the "Learn to Tat" book and have problems with any of the patterns? (Particularly "Daffodil Doily")?

I have the answers and corrections if you like!

I contacted the publisher and they sent me "corrections" that exactly matched the book and after several months and more phone calls I received a new correction that wasnt correct either then after more miles of wasted thread and more phone calls I finally figured it out and sent the corrections to the publisher when she sent me the final "corrected pattern" it was even worse than the other two (rings going nowhere on the end of chains and whatnot) and even refused to acknowledge my submissions! So if anyone is struggling with this pattern, I will happily share the "correct" corrections if anyone would like them.

Its such a lovely pattern I just dont know why the editor and publisher would not want the readers to be able to complete the project.......

There are several "Learn to Tat" books that I have. Which one is it that you have? Can you give Author or publisher, please. Thanks

I have a couple as well. It would not be unreasonable to publish here the corrections you have.

The book is called "Learn to Tat" by Janette Baker published by DRG.
Its a big pattern but quite pretty. Its just too bad that the editor refuses to see and acknowledge my corrections. I went through HOURS of frustration and gads of thread trying to do this! I can however understand where the editor would "expect" that an experienced tatter would know to close and reverse work and obviously know to join the last chain but to a new tatter it could be VERY confusing and frustrating so thats why I submitted the corrections. The editor had even deleted the last chain in the first round which made NO sense at all!

So I humbly submit my corrections with the whole pattern:
Daffodil Doily by Janette Baker (Corrections by Tats)
Rnd 1: R 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
*CH 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
R 3 – 3 + (to 4th picot of PR) 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
Rep from * 5 times. (total 7 Rings)
7th Ring 3 – 3 + (to 4th picot of PR) 3 – 3 + (to 2nd picot of 1st Ring) 3 – 3 CL/RW
CH 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
Join last CH to beginning of round. Cut/Tie/Hide ends.
Rnd 2: *R 3 – 3 – 3 + (to 2nd picot of Chain rnd 1) 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
CH 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
R 3 – 3 – 3 + (to 4th picot of same Chain of rnd 1) 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
CH 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 CL/RW
Rep from * total 14 Rings and Chains.
Join last CH to beginning of round. Cut/Tie/Hide ends.
Rnd 3: *R 5 + 5 (to 4th picot of any Chain of rnd 2) CL-Do NOT Reverse
R 9 + 9 (to 2nd picot of next Chain of rnd 2) CL/RW
CH 4 – 4 – 4 – 4 – 4 – 4 CL/RW
Rep from * around. Join last CH to beginning of round. Cut/Tie/Hide ends.
Rnd 4: RW after EACH Ring leaving 1/8 inch unworked thread space between Rings.
Ring A: R 3 – 3 + (to 1st picot of Chain of rnd 3) 3 – 3 CL/RW
*Ring B: R 5 – 5 CL/RW
Ring C: R 3 + (to picot of Ring B) 3 + (to next picot of chain) 3 – 3 CL/RW
Ring D: Large Ring R 4 + (to picot of Ring C) 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 4 CL/RW
Ring E: R 3 + (to 3rd picot of Ring D) 3 + (to next picot of Chain) 3 – 3 CL/RW
Ring F: R 5 + (to last picot of Large Ring E) 5 CL/RW
Ring G: R 3 + (to 3rd picot of Ring F) 3 + (to next picot of Chain) 3 – 3 CL/RW*
Rep Rings B through G around. Join last Ring to first picot of first Ring. Cut and tie.

If anyone finishes one I would love to see a pic! I have been working on it in size 80 myself and have a round and a half to go!

Thankyou, I checked & I had that book among the ones I have. So I put it with the book so anyone else who goes to use it will know about the mistake & know how to make it IF they want.

I don't have this book, but I have published with DRG before and found them to be very uncomunacative! They had one of my items for well over a year after purchasing the Copyright, then deciding NOT to publish it. They FINALLY, after much badgering from me, sent me back my original, which they are supposed to do after publication. I have also had them CHANGE the Names of some of my patterns without even consulting me first! So, this doesn't surprise me at all!

hummm out of the Blue, totally unsolicited, I received a #10 envelope with the corrected pattern; directly from the author. The address and return address were hand written. I think the designer herself went out of her way to assist tatters. Kudos to her for that!

Wow, that was awfully nice! Wish I had got one before wasting all that thread! :) How did she get your name/address? I went round the block with the Marj at DRG and got nowhere....

I perhaps did an unkind thing, but while on Amazon buying the Crochet/Hyperbolic surfaces book, it offered me the Learn to Tat book. So I posted a review for the Learn book telling buyers to beware of errors, and that the patterns made assumptions about how beginners would handle instructions that probably weren't warranted. I blamed the publisher, not the author.
Guess this posting is also my "revealing secrets" post, too.

This is one of the versions I received from DRG. If you will notice in Round 1 there is no final chain to join to the first, no cut/tie/hide ends to start the new round, no close/reverse work (although experienced tatters already know to do this).
The first round is where I got stuck for countless hours and wasted yards of thread. From the standpoint of a non professional tatter (and I was a beginner when I tried this one) it was very frustrating!

To Judy,
I wish I had read your review before I bought this book at my local craft store! :)
But again I am glad for the experience of being able to figure out these little errors on my own-Maybe next time I will read and think through the pattern thoroughly before attempting to tackle it! :)

I ordered my copies directly from Janette in Idaho.

HERE ARE THE DAFFODIL DOILY INSTRUCTIONS I RECEIVED (along with an apology)

* Ring B: 5 - 5 RW
Ring C: R 3 + (to 3rd picot of ring A) 3 - (to next picot of chains) 3 - 3 RW
LARGE RING D: R 4 + (to picot of ring B 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4
Ring E: R 3 + ( to 3rd picot of ring C) 3 + (to next picot of chain) 3 - 3 RW

Note from Janette Baker: "It has come to my attention that there are errors in the Daffodil Doily pattern on page 41. I am enclosing a corrected pattern for that Doily. I apologize for the inconvenience. "

Bev says: if there are any errors in THIS one, it is the typists…but I did proof read. It would be hard for her to notify all the people who bought Learn to TAT from Booksellers. I had the same experience with a Jan Stawitz book (out of print now) and he sent a correction to those who had bought from him….

Note: Notice in Round 1 where there STILL is no final chain to connect to the first one. Round 2 is correct, so I dont see how she could miss this...
I dont mean to nitpick, but this is a very important part and it seems as if even Janette Baker herself has not noticed this even after I pointed it out to her in great detail in my email to her.
Oh well, if she wants to omit that, its her pattern I guess. At least I tried my best to help.

Thank you so much for posting this!! I am a new tatter and knew that this pattern had to be written incorrectly after completing the second ring, but was second guessing myself because I am a beginner. It was very frustrating not to find pattern errata published on Annies Attic website. I've been working my way through the less complex projects in the book with the goal of making this pretty doily. You are a blessing! I've crocheted for most of my life, knit, embroider, sew..etc. I've never become so addicted so quickly to any form of lace making or needlework as I have to tatting.

If you are still interested in tatting the Daffodil Doily, you might want to look at this thread, starting around post #13: http://www.intatters.com/showthread.php?8404-First-shuttle-tatting-a-heart/page2

I'm about 1/3 of the way finished with the last round and will report back when I'm finished as to whether my fix has worked. Enjoy!

Thanks for the additional tips. I'm new to tatting, so tackling this doily is making me nervous now!

I have Learn to Tat by Jeanette Baker and love her DVD instructions. In fact, it is how I learned to tat. I tatted the doily the directions didn't make sense to me, but thought it was just my inexperience, so I just looked at the picture and tried to follow it. My doily turned out OK, but didn't really look like the one in the picture. I am glad you posted the corrections as I was really, really frustrated and probably untatted as much as I tatted.
The picture of my doily is in my album under "first doily", but I couldn't get it to post here.
Thanks for posting the corrections so I can print it out and put it in the book.

Me too Janet. The DVD included in the Learn to Tat by Jeanette Baker got me to where I could tat (finally after many years of trying). I never tried to tat that particular doily, but now I feel compelled to go back a look at it (armed with the corrected instructions, which I will put in my book).

Hi Dianna, try page 1 of this thread post #4 by TheMadTatter. The corrections are in Red. Have fun as it is a pretty doily.
The Ridgewoman received emailed instructions that still left out something.

I had trouble with the last round. It was not flat. It wound up like a ruffle. So I starched it that way and acted like that's what it was supposed to be like. I want to try it again, but I hope I can make it flat this time.
