View Full Version : SSSR while needletatting

Having used the SSSR (Single Shuttle Split Ring) in a couple of my designs (dragons both  ) and learning needle tatting these days, I was pnodering on how to do SSSRs with a needle.
Last night, after an on line class on split rings and split chains for needles, it dawned on me.
To make the SSSR effect using needletatting, you use cahins. For a SSSR: 3-3/4-4 you first make a 3-3 chain, then a 4-4 split chain connected to the beginning of the 3-3 chain. This is a bit fiddly and stitches can easilly drop off the needle.
But then testing this I realized you'll get the same and or even better looking result using ordinary split rings for needle.
I tested this on the tail of Ringtrim (http://www.nuperelle.net/drager/monstre/RingtrimEng.pdf) with one ordinary ring, four in chain-split chain style and one in SR style. Acording to the pattern, the last one should have been in two different colours.
Now I'm pondering on how to solve the "ring floating on a SR" challenge. This most probably call for a chain - splitchain solution. Will test it later.

Somehow I'm not wrapping my head around this. I read what you posted, went away from it and now have come back and I still am confused. To do a needle tatted chain the ball thread must be used so I don't understand how this is a SSSR with needle and would result in any difference from the regular needle split ring. Could you take step by step pictures or do up a diagram because like I said I just am not getting it and I would really like to.
Thanks.

That'c correct, hence the

And that is probably because I use the SCMR technique when making needletatted rings. Mind you, I'm a newbie needle tatter LOL
But then there are the true rings and ... is it possible to make SSSR by using thr true ring? Investigation needed!

The first thing that comes to mind is make a true ring and then sew the thread through half the stitches (or whatever the pattern indicates) so that the thread is at the other end of the ring.

I'm brand new to needle tatting and am not sure this is what you are looking for. But you might try this site. It might help you. :)

This is the only way I know how to do a Split Ring. I know all of these initials in patterns (ie SSSR) confuse the heck out of me! A lot of patterns I have read don't even tell at the top of the pattern what they stand for! As if we are supposed to KNOW already what they stand for! I just look at the picture and wing it...:innocent:

That link takes you to a site that has a lot of the abbreviations and what they stand for. :)

Interesting! I would love to find out how to do some of those things in Needle Tatting. I have never run across most of those terms before.

Hi. I am new to tatting and this forum
I came across this post and I recently was making tis needled tatted
necklace and she gives instructions on making a split ring by first making the
first half of the ring then taking the thread out of the eye and using the
thread onthat end to make the other half of the ring.
I have added the link to that page of the instructions.
Not sure if that is what you are looking for.
Happy tatting

Split-Ring and needletatting
The pattern is pretty cute, because I'm a needletatter (1year 1/2), try the pattern to-day an I'll tell you.
I learnt needletatted split-ring with HH tatting
Whew. Let me see. The Celtic Patterns book..forgot the title right now, from Handy Hands has a couple of instruction pages with photos for needle tatting floating rings on a chain. Here's a scenario, a cross made up of 5 rings only Like a big x. No threads between, no chains. Needle tatters, you need two needles! Start where the arms of the cross meet the uprights, right in the center. Since I don't have a handy diagram for it, imagine its stitch count is 6 F 6 F 6 F 6 where F is the floating ring. Each floating ring stitch count will be 6-6-6-6.
Here we go. Continuous thread method, much much more on the left than right. Right needle in hand, put the first six stitches on using thread from the left needle as though it were a ball of thread. :smile:Pull the stitches off the needle. Now drop the right needle! Do not mess with it. No reverses, nothing. Pick up the left needle, and (for right handers, put the needle in Rt hand) tat the floating ring described above then close. Now Drop the Left Needle and Pick up the right one again. Using the same thread, do 6 stitches on the R.needle, then repeat from  finish 3 floating rings. 6 more stitches using the Right needle and you're finally ready to close that center ring. The bottom ring is a split ring 6-6/6-6. Done. This cross with I think 6 or 7 rings is step 1 in an interwoven Celtic Cross in the book. My apologies to Barbara, but I'm not home where my books are.
