As I usually do, I analyze patterns for the most efficient way to start and end a piece. The fundamental issue was how to get from the first round (written as cut and tie)to the second round. The actual pattern doesn't matter because we see this all the time.

Not being fond of split chains (we all have our weaknesses!) I decided to start with a chain instead of a ring. A paper clip gives you something to hold on to and the thread is wrapped for a chain as usual. Sometimes, you only need to do a part of a chain.

Aha! my real problem: hiding the ends from the shuttle and the ball at the beginning of the work because, as usual, I have botched the beginning and no longer have CTM (continuous thread method) and the shuttle is full. Always going forward (cuz I can't find reverse)
NOW I decided to tat the first chain with only the thread from the ball (I finger tatted it). Then when I start the first ring, I can tat over tails to hide the end I finger tatted with. Then hide the shuttle end in the next chain.

TA-DA!!!! The last element will allow me to split ring up to the next round. it worked, too.
Open to all comments or suggestions. This was the decision in the heat of the moment. I would love to hear other ideas.
