I have been wondering, is there any challenge running or planned? I couldn't find one...
I do keep myself challenged anyway, but thought it might be fun to have a"mission" and share. Particularly if it is something not too time consuming (as I am in a busy passage of my life - that is part of the reason I am not joining the 25 motif challenge, that I don't want to have to keep a blog...)

I would like to join a summer challenge - something to do while the kiddos are in the pool!

I was thinking of a challenge to tat any of the patterns which need a photo from knots - http://www.intatters.com/knots/tag/photo-needed/

sounds like a good idea, kersti.

I really like that idea! One of the edgings I've already done, but I turned it into a circle so I don't think that would count!!! Maybe I'll do it again as an edging and photograph it. It would make a great summer challenge!
I would love to do that coaster, only I dont have the book lol so I guess my challenge would be getting the book to do the pattern!!!

I like Kersti's challenge. I get to try new things and perform a service for InTatters at the same time. A win-win situation.

ahhh, i don't own any of those vintage books. is there an easier way to get my hands on the pattern online?
soyloquesoy
21-05-2010, 03:53 AM
Check each pattern: the three I have chosen have patterns on-line.
http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/02/hearts-desire/
http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/01/frivolite-herz/ (in German, does have a glossary I think)
http://www.intatters.com/knots/2009/11/circle-in-tatting/ (in vintage longhand, should be some challenge reading it...)
Kersti
21-05-2010, 06:56 AM
While I generally try to use the original photo as it's the best representation of the designer's ideas, if you tat any of these by all means send on your pic! Obviously the ones marked as "photo needed" are the highest priority, they tend to be vintage patterns too so a modern take would be great. Upload your photo here and let me know :)
Feel free to add any pattern notes to the comments on Knots, and if you find the pattern in other books let me know that too - there was a lot of re-printing going on in the 30s-60s
If you don't have a vintage pattern in any of your books, let me know which it is and I'll see what I can do.

I'm very keen to recreate Floral Embellishment 9105. I went to ebay and found someone has a copy out for bids. However, I think the price is set too high (5.99 + 13.99 shipping). I'm looking elsewhere. Hope someone has a copy of this and is willing to share...
An alternative that I would like to recreate would be Floral Motif 9112. If for any reason I can't get hold of the actual pattern, well, I'll work from the visual that's on KNOTS. :)

Many of these patterns were reprinted in other books - so someone might be able to point us to a modern, in print book that has them. Meanwhile

Hey ya'll. what do you guys think.
4673
i tried to eyeball it. the original picture is here-->http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/04/edging-9071/
this is what i did
*r1:3ds,p,4ds,p,4ds,p,3ds
rw
ch1:6ds,p,14ds
rw
r2:7ds,join to middle p, 7ds
rw
ch1bw:14ds,p,6ds
r1 joined at center p
ch2:4ds,p,4ds*
rep *to*
ch1bw = ch1 backwards
in between the first and 2nd repeat has ch2:5ds,p,5ds whereas the last 2 have the ch2: 4ds,p,4ds. as you see the 4,p,4 is better
also the white one was done on size #7 needle with size 80 thread and this red was done on a shuttle with size 10 thread

I would like to join the challenge with this insertion from page 4 of the "photos needed" pages. It is by Isabella Beeton.

and this is the original (http://www.intatters.com/knots/2009/11/124/). Mmm, not too similar, I agree, but I followed the instructions.

Shannon, isn't it just so cool to see the picture of your tatting there?
Snowy, Beeton's drawing was probably and "ideal" version. I have done that pattern as a bookmark twice, I have some strips of that pattern tatted by my grandmother many years ago, and they all look like yours ;) I think your picture is great to get to Knots too!

an observation wrt to the motifs i'm tatting (for both 9105 and 9112):
the pattern states "J&P Coats Tatting Crochet #70"... and the smallest sized thread i have is #40. so when i tatted up the flower motifs, esp the largest flower with lots of picots and joints, i find the stitches overlap one another. seems overcrowded, if you know what i'm talking about. am still working on the patterns. hope to finish them soon.
shannon_in_love
30-05-2010, 02:36 AM
maybe your just pulling it closed to tight. or maybe the stitches are just too loose. have you got a picture of it so far?
do you mean where there are tons of picots? that just means to tug a bit on the picots.
Valerie

I am not sure if I understand this challenge (maybe because I don't know what knots is). Should I tat one of photo needed patterns, make photo and challenge will be done? E.g. this one? http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/03/insertion-with-lace-stitch/
When does this challenge finish? (I know it isn't difficult pattern, but in this cases I like deadlines ;-))
carolivy
31-05-2010, 01:04 PM
That is what needs to be done Frakira. That way we have nice Tatting to see if we are interested in doing the pattern instead of old, scratchy B&W photos.
Posted my 9075 edgings. Two choices. I like the colors on the darker one better; perhaps a more consistent green would have helped on the one with gold flowers. There's a third photo in my 2010 album.

Confused about where to post about which I am trying, so I am posting in group and here.
I have started working on figuring out Beeton’s book of Needlework - Tatted edging - InTatters - Knots - 0114
Three or 4 of the scallops out of the 7 I have done that look like the example, so I am getting somewhere. I am working in size 10 thread so I can see what I am doing. The instructions are certainly confusing in places. Doing the joins (at least I think that is what is meant) exactly right is important on this one for sure. This may take a few trys to get it right.

This is HDT that Sandra E. Sent me a couple years ago. The name of it is called Apple Blossom, by Tatskool. I am so glad that I blogged about that because I had forgotten who had done the thread. So there you are. this is Her work. Thank you Sandra, Thank you Tatskool and you all are welcome. Thanks for the commentary I am glad you all like the work. I love how the picots lay. The longer ones really do make it light and airy, dainty even. I believe this is cordonnet size 20 for those counting. M.

I love a good challenge! I did this pattern and found that when (as in many patterns that call for the Paperclip) you need the paperclip, all you REALLY need is a place holder for 1 stitch. I used a small piece of wire, just a bit smaller than the thread that I was using. The pattern came out great then. I have used this technique many times where a Paperclip is called for. Many times the thickness of the paperclip is much larger than the thread you are using and it makes for an odd "looseness" on the part that has that join. I did this one in size 30 Cébélia as that is what I had handy sitting here at my desk.

I'm about to start the Hayden yoke. It's a large enough project to keep me going in the next couple of weeks. I've never done anything like it so I'd thought to try it out.
Josie Passell
09-06-2010, 07:21 AM
I started the Hayden yoke a couple of days ago and I've done 2 roses and 2 wheels, my tension is tighter than the tatting in the photo, so it might turn out a lot smaller. :-)
I am in awe of your decision to take on this monumental work. Keep us posted on the progress. What colors are you using?
Josie Passell
09-06-2010, 08:04 AM
I stuck to white, as Kersti wanted them as tatted and I think most yokes then would have been white/ecru. Plus if I do it and enjoy it, then I can add colour and adjustments to the pattern :-)

I wrote down a bunch that I wanted to do and printed out two of the patterns. Naturally, I don't have threads to coordinate with each other for any of them. LOL. Sooo, I'm going for the simple Beeton Edge. (http://www.intatters.com/knots/2009/12/beeton-edge/ (http://www.intatters.com/../knots/2009/12/beeton-edge/)) While I haven't made any huge mistakes or anything, I realized that I really don't like it. LOL. I went for white for the rings and a dark green for the chains since the rings look flowery, to me... ANYWHO, That the bottom edge of each "flower" is two chains together is driving me crazy! LOL. I'm going to do more on what I have, but I doubt anyone will want the picture, LOL.
So, why am I bothering with this post? To keep myself going. LOL. I needed to vent. Sorry. Hopefully, my camera or my phone will work for me to take a picture later and I can post it tonight after I've done a bit more. :-)

I am on my 4th sample, doing 8 repeats of the pattern and I am fighting the top layer of chains. They need to be VERY even. The first sample was just to figure out the basic pattern. After I finish this one I may try it in size 20, so far I have been working in size 10 thread. The Lydia was tooo soft and I am working in Flora now and it is better.
PS: oops, pattern is beeton edging 0114

Imoshen: LOL. Ya learn something new everyday.
MercyPres: Good luck! I can't wait to see what you do as the current illustration probably does no justice to the edging!
Follow up on my last post, lol: I did as much as I could with the length of white that I cut for the rings... :-/ Then, I went to crochet the border (By the way, I literally have not crocheted in several years. LOL). Let's just say the border isn't on there. I couldn't find the crochet hook that I swear is somewhere around here... The small one I use for joins is definitely too small and the only other one I found decided it didn't like me... Even after I stretched (majorly) two of my picots for it, it still didn't want to cooperate. Tomorrow, hopefully, I'll get a chance to grab one from my mom's stash.
,
Stephanie Grace
A FEW MOMENTS LATER: My computer mouse died on me --the batteries have literally been dying for a week. I stood up to go and get new ones, but first moved a paper to check my desk... Lo and behold, there was a crochet hook right there! LOL. It's still too big, I think, but I'm going to give a go now. :-)
MercyPres
16-06-2010, 12:11 AM
I double checked and yep this is called a challenge. It certainly is for me.
Stephanie, I understand about the colors making a difference in liking a pattern. I see patterns in colors done here and posted and I love them but then I chose the wrong color and it makes a big difference in how I view them.
StephanieGrace
16-06-2010, 12:29 AM
After my last post, I realized that, yup, the hook is too big. I'll grab one tomorrow.
MercyPres: I can't tell you how many things I've thought were so gorgeous, then I started and stopped because of the color. When I looked at this edging in front of me, though, I realized that it doesn't remind of flowers but moths. LOL. If the border is on the bottom, okay, maybe flowers, but with the border of the top, definitely moths. I'm thinking that I'm going to do it again in different colors and see if I can't make it look better --maybe butterflies instead of moths? LOL. Now, I just have to figure out what I'll use the edgings for --other than trying for a picture, of course. LOL.

Tatted Edging - Beeton's book of Needlework
http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/03/tatted-edging/
This is sample 4. Still not happy with it. This pattern is ALL chains. Thread Flora size 10. I will try the pattern in size 20 next.
I cannot get the top chain (above the scallops) of row 1 to be straight. Row 2 the center ring is not a ring simply isn't working for me. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Suggestions????
Top chain -- would Ruth Perry's Balanced double stitch help?
I don't agree with your conclusion on color choice.
i guess its a pattern that needs to be solid color.
Carolivy's looks tighter to start with because she used mini picots for the side joins. I think the pink brings out a heart theme. Green would make it look like a shamrock, white like a dogwood bloom.

What a great idea. I love dogwood blooms and use photos I have taken of blooms from our trees on cards, now I can tat some. Another project to try for my list.
I will look up Ruth Perry's Balanced double stitch and try that next. I will master that design, it just might take me all summer at this rate though.

I have started 9069 edging (http://www.intatters.com/knots/2010/04/edging-9069/), from the Coats 229 book. It twists where the two rings are across from each other. I've done about 5 inches or so, using varied purple cotton pearl, ( a thread I hadn't used before, why try it with a pattern I've never done, sucker for punishment or something. :)

It looks bad, I know and I'd LOVE to say that finishing with the crochet part would make it look better, but I don't think so. I'm still going to try the crochet part, but I'm posting this for two reasons:
#1. I mentioned this in an earlier post so I figured, well, why not... LOL.
#2. I'd *really* like someone else to say, "Yes, I see moths too!"
You can see where the picots were stretched from my attempts at the crochet part with hooks that were far too large. I'm going to try it again, but I'm definitely looking more toward seeing my second attempt, so I want to do a few more on that one... Probably tomorrow since I just spent a few hours fighting with my computer to get it recognize my printer as a scanner.... :ermm:

Summer challenge
Hi Kersti and everyone,
I'm in troubles...I hurt myself in my shoulder and at schooll...the end of school term I'm having lots of work to do, so, I'm tatting very, very slow......
I'll put pictures of my tatting work as soon as I can, but I'm late...sorry....
Maria
Maria,
Please put your health first! We are all hoping you get better soon, but don't worry about finishing tatting and taking pictures when your shoulder hurts. If you miss tatting, you can dream and plan out things you want to do in your head until you get better and can actually do it. And let us know how you are, when you have time.

I read somewhere something about thread choice. Do the knots photos needed submissions of tatting have to be in a certain color? And once we have something (picture) to share how, where etc, do we post or send it?

No set colours or threads, just a clear photograph or scan so that it will work as a replacement image on knots.
When you have something to share place the image in your albums and make a note of it here or attach it here.

You mean it wasn't just me that never knew all along that it was all right there? LOL... Now, I'm just getting frustrated going through the library since many of the PDF files keep asking for passwords and I can't seem to find out what or why on the website... :-/ I want something to tat and I just can't seem to find anything that's making me jump right now.... :-( There's got to be something in that library that makes me clap and grab a needle --or shuttle since I'm still determined to make something with the shuttle. LOL.

As discussed on the Ancient Pattern Library group this probably is a version problem with Adobe reader. You have to have Version 9 otherwise the new files won't properly work!

Hmm... I didn't even think of blaming Adobe (I should have known considering the trouble I had with it on parents' computer the other day). I just updated my Linux OS, so everything should be the latest versions. I'll run a check and then look at the Adobe website, but I'm thinking that maybe the problem is because I have Linux and not Windows. There are plenty of things that block me or don't work properly without me installing programs to make them work right. *rolls eyes* That's what I get for deleting Windows, LOL, but my computer runs so much better without it! :-) I'll look into it later... I'll go through and note which ones I'm having a problem with and have someone else try them or I'll try them on a different computer tomorrow. :-)
Now, though, I think I'm going to write down some of a pattern, grab a needle, and sit on my couch and tat for a few hours. LOL. (Need to de-mood myself before I throw something. LOL).

Re: The Linux Problem. ;-)
I found a way around it! I think... LOL. It worked for me. Here's what I did: First, you'll need the WINE program. I don't remember how I got it, but you could always just run one of the programs to find it or search for how to get it. ;-) I downloaded Adobe Acrobat for Windows and then moved the .exe file to the C:\ Drive that WINE creates. Then, I ran the installation and (making sure that it was installing to C:\Program Files). I got an access violation pup-up and an error message, but everything went through. Then, I opened the reader from the Program Files folder. I downloaded and saved the PDF to my computer and opened it and Viola! It actually worked!
Sorry if I spoke in circles there. If you'd like to give a try and need me to reword or need any help or anything, just send me a message and I'll try to help as best as I can. :-) Hope it works for you! :-) (After spending most of the day going through the library for anything that mentioned tatting, I'm kicking myself for not figuring this out sooner. LOL. I didn't have to rush through each one! LOL. Now, I can see them at my leisure.. I'm pretty happy about that. LOL. ;-)

Hi everyone!
What a wonderful idea Kersti!
I love the idea of having the avid tatters of this group tat and scan (or photograph) the patterns that pictures are needed for.
I misunderstood the challenge. I thought it involved looking at a picture and figuring out the pattern from it. LOL!
If anyone is having problems reading a pattern, figuring out how it works, or has any questions I am more than willing to help. I have helped Australians with patterns and split chains in chat, so I'm up to the challenge.
Wishing you all plenty of shuttles and thread,

I like those as well, soyloquesoy! :-) There are several that I'm in love with and I keep going back to and then kicking myself for not having the right colors to make them look right... :-/ I'm determined to tat at least one thing tonight... and I will! Fireworks are going to be set off right behind where I live, so I'll definitely need something to calm my nerves (I hate fireworks.). I'm thinking I should give shuttle tatting something a try since it might not be the best idea to have a needle in my hand while there are loud bangs happening. LOL. I know me, I'll jump and end up with a needle through my hand... I don't want that! LOL.
Well, I'm going to jot down a pattern and get my night started. Hopefully, company won't show up so I can be nice and relaxed. Hmm... Tatting and a bubble bath sound quite good. LOL.

When I went to the Knots page, I noticed that some of the links led to a pattern and an old picture. Then some had a picture but no pattern, just the reference to the book the pattern was in.
Is your challenge to tat the item from the pattern?

Thanks,

Thank you SO MUCH, Shannon for that first link in your post! I have two crappy tatting books that always leave me uninspired. Other than that, I depend on the free patterns available online. PDF has become my best friend in the last few days! LOL. --Especially since I figured out how to get the ones from antiquelibrary.org to work with my Linux OS. :-D Now, I just need some patience --No, really, I looked at my husband earlier and declared that I will master shuttle tatting as soon as I can just so I never have to thread a needle again. All the time I spend getting that thread into that needle... then, I go and make a mistake or the thread knots and... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr....... Start all over AGAIN, Stephanie. Today, I tried a pattern TWICE with one color thread. After way too much failure in threading (yes, I have a threader --I broke one already and felt that this one was going the same way as the last one if I pulled any harder. LOL) in each attempt, I finally realized: Ah! This pattern doesn't want to be done in this color... I changed colors and guess what? GRRRRRRR... I got nothin'. Probably doesn't help that I had to step away and have a few conversations. I WILL finish this! I did only the first two rings and one chain and it looks like poop, but I'm finishing. Maybe R2 will look better when Ch2 and R3 join it... Right? LOL.
Eek! Sorry.... Apparently, I needed to get that out. LOL. I ramble too much. LOL.

Thank you, Shannon. It's just really nice to have a place to be able to rant, rave, and whine while learning. LOL. (Highlight of my weekend: I was told my mom made split chains, which she told me she couldn't do when I showed them to her -on needle, by the way. LOL. I showed up at her house and she was so thrilled and proud of herself and I smiled and had to laugh because she was doing one big, long chain of split rings and had NO ideas what she was doing it for or what it would be... How cute, right? LOL. THEN, I got to teach her the method that xstitchntat taught me with rings from a cut length of thread and chains off the ball. She got it! I'm very proud of her! :-) Okay, okay... I should be tatting. LOL.

If no pattern is available (I don't believe we get KNOTS here in the US), could I make a pattern from the picture that is available?
Hi Bill
KNOTS is certainly available in the US - it's not a printed product, it is the online site you're seeing.
The purpose of the site is to catalog all patterns that are available, whether online, in print or vintage, for sale or for free. I try to put up one a day, although this does change and you'll often see a flurry of updates after a period of none. I also try to mix them up a little so you don't get two months worth of vintage only patterns. You'll also find links to blogs and other tatting-related websites. I'm seriously thinking of changing this practice and just putting a mass of them up every so often.
Where there is a photograph available I use that, although I'm much happier to use one from our members if one is available. Where the pattern comes from a book I include the image of the book. If it's a vintage pattern that is not public domain some of them will be available but not all - let me know if you do not have access to the original and if I do I can help you out.
For the challenge it's important that the image is of the pattern that is being represented. Some of the photos are clear enough to do stitch counting, but we wouldn't want that to be wrong and then have a newbie choose that pattern based on a photograph only to find that they do not get the same result.
The photos for the challenge are to replcace the vintage photos/drawings or complete lack of any image. In the case of vintage this often shows a pattern in a totally different light and can make what was an old fashioned item seem quite modern.

Hi Karen It's lovely to see you back on the forum. Glad you are recovering, it can be so frustrating not being able to do things. I think this is what you want to know, some of the pictures of the older tatting on the knots section need to be tatted and photographed. Kersti has put in this thread or somewhere that it has to be tatted to the original pattern to give a true representation.

I have some notes for this one..
**notes: easier to use 2 shuttles instead of shuttle and ball
when doing the small inner rings use the ball thread shuttle and tat using that.
might be easier using a split ring for the center ring, then climb out of it using a mock picot.
