I'm not only into tatting, no, I'm a big fan of sewing my own teddy bears. And... well... I thought I could combine the two into a tatting mascot. Here she is, the Lady Tatterley, all with her own shuttle made from a little modelling clay.

To show Myladys size this is an Aero-style shuttle. She is about twice its length.

The lace for the collar and her lace cap were made from vintage size 150 thread, a generous gift from DaleMarie.
The little bit of lace Lady Tatterley seems to tat herself was made from size 160 egyptian cotton thought for bobbin lace. It's the thinnest thread I ever managed to work with, still it breaks easily. The lace has a width of approx 3mm.

Both bear and tatting are gorgeous, I find it hard to believe how fine the edgings are. I would be forever snapping the thread. Has this set you on the road to getting your tatting smaller and smaller?

The vintage thread isn't snappy at all, it works like a dream, better than any sewing cotton I used before.
The egyptian cotton was... a trial. It snapped four times before I got the desired length. Trouble is always the closing of the rings, but with cool dry hands I could work it for two to three rings in a row.
I tried finer thread - size 170 Egyptian cotton. That one was impossible. Totally. So I think we're at the point of "no getting smaller" unless they develop snap-proof thread.
By the way - the pattern for the collar is derived from Mlle. Riegos Vandyke Edging, the lace cap is one of the Big Stars from her Parasol.

I love it! It is so cool to see someone else that makes miniature Teddy Bears. I did one that was cross stitching and had her own little hoop and needle. She won the first place ribbon at the Arizona State Fair. She then flew to England to a friend that cross stitcches and collects bears. I will have to see if I can find the pictures I have of her. I did several others as well.

She is so cute! Great job. There is NO WAY I could tat with that thin thread. 30 is my limit. I am a tight tatter and tend to break the thread.
She has such an elegant look to her. Way cool!

Magnificent! And now i know that there are enough of us to have miniature tatting group. What do you think? Sharing advice about threads and showing off new stuff. I would love it!

Oh my, that sounds great! Would you mind if I'd try to give the Lady Tatterley a stitching sister? Maybe in time I will work out a variety of little bears, all doing some other needlework.

Why not? As I said - this is where miniaturizing truly ends, I couldn't work any finer thread. But I'm one of the "Size 70 or smaller" group of tatters - I don't really like working in thick thread except when doing specialized stuff like laces for clothing and jewelry that demand thicker threads.

So cute and beautiful all at the same time. I haven't actually tried anything smaller than size 20 thread yet. Probably should try it at some point.
lovely work! Wow that thread is fine!
