View Full Version : Tatting Over Tails... or Ends... whichever you call it

Normally, I tat over my ends, eliminating a few knots & hidings along the way. However, last night I encountered a problem!! When making a small motif of rings & chains, I tat the tail of the first chain into the first ring, & the tail of the first ring into the first chain. I also leave a very small space at the base of the first ring to join the last chain to the first...
I've never had any problem whatsoever with this, until last night. When I tried to make my join at the end, I apparently had the wrong thread; when I made my join, I made it to the thread woven into the ring, & pulled out a small loop.... I went back & made the join to the right thread, but I'm still left with the annoying little loop hanging out of my ring.
It doesn't seem that I could cut it without undoing my first chain, & I'd already trimmed the end of it off, so I can't just pull it back in (learned a lesson there!).... But what *can* I do???

I've done it too, RandaGray. I've seen others post that they, too, have done this. You've got a little ease in that ring because you tatted over the threads to begin with. I suggest you try to get a needle into the ring under the stitches. Before poking the eye of the needle through, thread that bit of end you need to hide into the eye of the needle and pull it into the ring again. My current solution to prevent me from doing this again is to leave those ends poking out of the ring until the piece is finished. If I see it disappearing as I'm joining, I know I have the wrong thread.

I tat over tails a lot... Rings not for chains, and I do not cut the tail until I am several elements away for the join. The snug the tail up and cut very close to the stitchs.
