So much has been said about my shuttle making so this is going to be where I want those of you that want to buy a shuttle to tell me if you want oak, teak, purpleheart, or mesquite. I also need to know if you want a small, medium size, big or celtic style shuttle. Also point or no point.

(finished the first celtic shuttle this morning except for glue cleanup)
I will make a list and have my hubby pick a name at random each time I start a new shuttle so I can attempt to make what you want. Then I can send you a PM so we can settle details of price, address and any other details like if you want a point, carving on it, or just plain, etc.
Also I took a picture of the tools that I use for making these shuttles. You will notice these are all hand tools. Everything I use is in the picture as well as 4 of the shuttles I have made. One is even being used to make AnneB's newest dragon-you can see his tail.

I think that this will be the best way to do it so that everyone gets one that wants one. Sign up and then when I get to you I will let you know. I think the one at a time idea is the best way and with a list and random who gets to get one first is the fairest way. Once you have recieved yours I will remove your name from the list until everyone that wants one has one. I also want my InTatters friends to have a chance for them before I try to set up ebay or etsy. You have all been so encouraging throughout my learning to make these, thank you so much.

ooohhh...I would love a purpleheart one. Might I ask how big the different sizes are before I make that decision though?

The purpleheart has not arrived yet and since I will be contacting you when your name is chosen you can tell me pretty much how long and how wide and how tall you want your shuttle to be. That will be the nice part of doing it this way.

I would love to buy an oak, medium sized shuttle with point. Please do not do too much and compromise your health.

Oh, I would be thrilled to own a large oak shuttle with no point!

Oak for me too Rachael. Without point and a bit larger than the Clover I have now. Since that is the only shuttle I have ever worked with, I can't tell you exactly what size, I just know I would like one larger than the Clover. No carving on mine. Just plain. I love the look of natural oak. Thank you.

I would go for a Teak large one... In no rush..
Are you signing them???? Dating them????.
I have some hand made ones that are singed on the inside of one of the blades.
It is a great way to remember who the artist is and how old it is.
Looks like the name and date was written with a fine nib and India ink. One even has the type of wood written also.

I am initialing and dating them but I hadn't thought of adding the name of the wood. Will have to do that if there is enough room where I do it(oak might be easy to fit whereas purpleheart would take more room). Thanks for the idea. Also I will be enclosing a card/tag with the info on the shuttle when it is sent out-will have the date, my full name, the name of the person made for, the type of wood and the size of the shuttle. It will be tied to the post with a length of tatting thread. Ghorsley gave me that idea.

Purpleheart can be shortened to pplht if you are short on space, that way they will still be able to place the shuttle with the card you are sending as well. ;-)

Please add my name to your list. I would like a shuttle just like you made for ghorsley but out of oak. Thank you for sharing your shuttle making skills with us!
i think it would be brilliant to add a picture of the finished product before you send it out. that way, you would show all the different designs and types of wood used, and we can all oohh and ahhh and the lucky recipient.
if privacy is an issue, you can always leave who it's for out.
love the pic of your tools. very cool.
add my name. what i want can come later!

I would love one too...and since I am from Texas, I would love one in Mesquite, a little larger than a Clover and with a point. Thanks for sharing your artistic talents with us, Rachael!
Pssstt! Has anyone noticed my conspicuous absence from this particular thread? I've been a good girl and not put my hand up for one of Rachael's shuttles, since I'm getting the first one to test tat with. :innocent: Yes, I have been such a good girl. Sorry, friends, but that all ends now. The purple heart wood has simply seduced me into applying, even at this early stage, for one of them. I know I'll have to wait my turn. Not a problem. I know it will probably take quite a while for Rachael to get to me. Not a problem. I still want a purple heart wood shuttle, please. I'll work out the details with Rachael once she gets that far. In the meantime, my hat is officially in the ring, even if it is under all the rest already in there.

Hey everyone. I wanted to let you know that I was able to get some red oak, white oak, and real Holy Land Olive wood for shuttles in addition to the teak and purpleheart. When it is your turn I will contact you with a list of wood available at that time. I am working with the person I won the auction from and she is willing to cut the wood I want as this as I want one her machines so once the wood gets here I will be able to make them much faster than I can now. I worked on one yesterday that took 7 hours to get the blades thin enough for the bending process so you can imagine how much time already thin wood will save me.

Rachael, that sounds really exciting! I don't know much about wood, but I do understand that it takes quite a bit of work to get it just the way you want it.

That is really exciting Rachel! I love wood work - but I agree some parts can be really boring and not time effective - so great that you will get the right pieces to start from!

I am so excited. Today I made a shuttle from the wood we cut when we trimmed our mesquite tree in the front yard. I wanted to make one and see how thin I could get the wood since according to the scale here http://www.thinboards.com/WoodHardness.aspx it is the fifth hardest wood. I got it so thin that the point is like paper and still strong. And the wood when polished is amazing with a kind of cross grain type that looks iridescent. I know that these will work up beautiful but I will make them with thicker blades than this one. (keeping this one for me since it is from our tree) I did cut some more a little thicker as well so no worries there. I will post pics when I can get on hubby's computer tomorrow.

I would love a Celtic shuttle that's about 3" long. I don't care about the type of wood, but would like a point. Pretty Please?

Having seen it's picture, I'd love a miniature teak one! - but not as fat as Lynn's, for the post, I don't think I could handle it - just a small one, please!

Rachael,
Your shuttles are absolutely beautiful! I would like two, a mesquite (a native of Texas really needs one from mesquite) and one of the Holy Land olive wood. I will patiently wait my turn.
Rachael, I'd also like a mesquite one, so put me on the list. They're really lovely. You've found a use for all that mesquite wood the Texans keep turning into charcoal brickettes or burning up in their BBQ grills. By the way, did you ever try eating any of the pods. There is one variety that has a big fat pod, not as big as a tamarind, but large, and you can grind it into a fine flour and make very nutritious cookies. Slurp.
