Hi Everyone,
As it's autumn I keep thinking of the beautiful maple leaves of my native Canada and I wanted to have a go at making one of my own. It's a work in progress, I'm still not completely happy with it but it's my favourite so far.

It's worked in Yarnplayer's beautiful "Sugar Maple" thread.
I think the lowest lobes are probably too big and I may change the shape a bit. What do you think? Maybe some comments will help me make some changes.
Thanks.

It's a beautiful leaf! You are the artist and I checked, you have a valid artistic license.. LOL. It's a great leaf and it doesn't have to completely mimic nature unless you want it to. Don't be so hard on yourself. Enjoy your creation.

Beautiful! I'd been looking for a good maple leaf pattern to play with Lizbeth's Falling leaves color, so I do hope you share. I love the thread you chose too!

Hi Frivole,
Your maple leaf is stunning. What size of the sugar maple thread did you use? I have it in size #10, and I was planning on making a maple leaf with it, too.

That is gorgeous. I love the colours.
happy tatting
Josie
I also love it. Don't let perfection drive you crazy. So, before you try making the lower lobes smaller... and the second lobes larger, or something else, let it rest a while in your brain. You may find its just fine as it is.

Thank you everyone!
RSMRE, it's "Sugar Maple" in size 20 that I used. I have made some modifications and I think I like them. Unfortunately, my daughter has taken my camera with her today and I can't take a photo of the new leaf. Hopefully I will be able to post tonight (UK time). And yes to the kind people who asked, I plan on sharing the pattern (once I'm happy with the design!).
Back soon.

Doesn't look like it needs any improving to me!! It's great. Yes, will we be seeing the pattern? My last purchased threads were in the fall colors just right for leaves!!

Well, thanks again everyone. I will show you the next prototype and you can vote on the one you prefer! Sadly I've had to send my computer in for repair today so not able to post new leaf tonight. Definitely tomorrow! (it's very slow typing on the tiny keyboard of my ipod touch!). You realise how much you depend on your computer when you have to do without it!
Best wishes,

Hi All,
Relieved to have my computer back (they were extremely efficient and got the work done very quickly!).
Been working on the bottom lobe (mostly) of the leaf and have tried a few different things...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4133/4998074283_73fabe7c86.jpg
And then I thought they looked nice as a group, like fallen leaves on the ground... I've not blocked or ironed them yet and they look more lifelike with the slightly curled edges.
I prefer the new shape to the bottom lobes, looks more like a proper maple leaf I think (different variations on the three leaves on the left). Bad news though, I appear to have lost the first leaf I showed you! That's what happens when you carry your tatting around with you (I like to fill any gaps in my day with a bit of tatting here and there, while waiting for the children at school, etc.)
So, nearly there I think with the final leaf. Just been writing it up as I go. Need to test-tat it a couple more times.
Best wishes,
Frivole

Very nice Frivole! I really like the one with the orange and green, but they are all terrific!

I think the leaf is great and I, too, loved the fall colors. Perhaps the "lost" leaf will re appear, I hope so. Personally, I like it when flowers are tatted as they grow in nature…It's disturbing (to me) to see a flower that has five petals ~ appear with 4 or 6. I guess I'm one who thinks if it is a representation of something real ~ it should be true to its natural form. But that is just me…I once painted (oils) a floral piece and called it "floral fantasy" because although it resembled the flowers used, it was not representative in the truest sense. There are a couple of maple leaf patterns out there that are, also, very nice. I believe Sherry Pence had one ~ I know I have 3 different maple leaf in my binders. It's a lovely leaf to begin with and worthy to be tatted ~ for sure! I'm sure you will come up with what pleases you. At first, I thought the little picots were JKs ~ my eyes are really deteriorating (LOL)…need those new glasses. Happy leaf tatting.. bj

They all look great. My favorite is still the first one.

Right, I think that's it. I'm going to leave it alone now. To me, this looks more like a maple leaf than the first one I showed you. I have two versions, one with split rings on the bottom lobes and one with a plain chain. I might just write up the pattern with both versions so people can choose the one they prefer because I can't make up my mind!

So as soon as I have a bit of time, I will type it up and post it under the members' patterns section.

Hihi, that would be awsome  I love leaves, I even collect real ones! Press them flat and stick them in a book
Frivole,
I had to put both pictures together to compare... but i still like the first one best.
They are all pretty though. Good work!!!

Thank you! Yes, the colours of that thread are really lovely. I have typed up the pattern and uploaded it into the members' patterns section... I think it is just awaiting approval before it can be viewed.
Anke, hope you won't be too disappointed but it is the second leaf I wrote the pattern for...
