Have you pimped your shuttle? Have you coloured it, painted it, decoupaged it, cut it up, stuck to it or otherwise altered the standard model? If so post your pictures here for us all to see!

BTW the title of this post is taken from the MTV show "pimp my ride" where a boring or clapped out old car is transformed into a thing of (questionable) beauty.

This is my Aero shuttle, never liked it until I clipped off the tip, filed it down, painted it with nail polish and added nail decals. Now I love it :)

I love your polymer clay/resin shuttle, Heather. How is it to work with? Is it heavy? How did you balance the space between the tips? And how did you apply the resin? I guess I'm interested in the whole process.

I don't have any pictures to show yet, because I haven't tried. I'm really interested in the decoupage idea. Does anyone have any tips for how to go about it?

I love them all! There are so many great ideas out there. I've recently decoupaged a couple with fabric and made little matching bags, but haven't gotten the pictures off the camera yet. Umi-N-Tsuru has a picture posted of the one I sent to her. I will post a couple of pictures on my blog soon.

I am afraid this is going to become an addiction like Liyarra's . . .

Liyarra... wow your rally have some "Dressy" shuttles. Thanks for sharing your pictures. What do you use????

Liyarra
07-10-2010, 11:12 AM
stickers, temporary tattoos, small flowers from my Mum's garden, anything that looks like it will work. Then a layer of clear nail polish. Have been on and used for a couple of years or so now and no reapplication required. Some of the thicker ones have peeled off. I tried some with rice paper but that came off pretty quickly. Just don't try to remove mistakes with nail polish remover - dissolves the shuttle.........:ohmy::sad:

Liyarra, I love your shuttles. Thanks for the explanation of how you did them. That doesn't sound so terribly complicated. I especially like the ones with your initial in them. Are the all Clovers? Some of them look like they could be something else, but I'm perplexed.

the only one that is not a Clover is the white one with the dolphin -that is a Susan Bates. There are Clovers with and without points so that might be the different ones you are seeing.

I decided to try decoupaging a shuttle this weekend. It's cute, but I don't like working with all that goopy stuff, so I'm not sure how far I'll take this. I used a Clover shuttle, scrapbooking paper, and Mod Podge. I trimmed the excess off with a craft knife.

Here is a link for Mod Podge. http://www.dickblick.com/products/plaid-mod-podge/ The only drawback I have found when using this for decopauge is that it is not waterproof. When I do my decopauge, I use Aleene's Decopauge http://www.clarionhousecollectibles.com/servlet/the-271/aleene%27s-instant-decoupage-sealer/Detail

Lace-lovin' Librarian, Can you explain to me what Mod Podge is please?

Mod Podge is a glue and water mixture that's used to decoupage pieces. I just started using it this weekend, and it's been a lot of fun! I bought it at Michaels.

Carolivy... it was recommended to me to use a sealer when finished. So I do plan on using the spray sealer on my shuttles.

If in doubt go to Spotlight/Lincraft and look for their decoupage supplies, there's bound to be a glue there that will work

How long will these decorations probably last with continual use in our hands??

celticflame99
14-10-2010, 03:07 PM
I know someone who modge podged and sealed their bath tub, instead of tile. I would think water like that would be a lot rougher than our hands, so I imagine it would be pretty resilient.

My recent decoupaged shuttles:
7679

I used ModPodge and paper napkins on Clover shuttles. A thin layer of ModPodge on the shuttle to work as glue to hold the napkin in place, with just a little on the side edges to hold the napkin down over the edge. Once I pressed the napkin onto the glue, I put a layer of ModPodge over the top and carefully tore away the napkin that wasn't stuck to the sides. The sides are not necessarily covered 100%, but they look OK to me. Once they were dry, I used a fine emery board to smooth out any roughness. I repeated for about 4 coats of ModPodge, and still need to spray a quick layer of sealer on them. It seems like any of the ModPodge that is left on the plain plastic is easy enough to clean off.

Cindy, did you use a layer of paint first as in the tutorial? I was wondering if that makes a difference in how the Mod Podge holds, or if it's just a difference in the way the color shows through the napkin.

When I used the scrapbooking paper, I found it was easier to apply the Mod Podge to the paper... a lot less mess! I used a craft knife to cut away the excess paper, so the side of my shuttles show instead of the paper, which is fine with me.

CindyK
14-10-2010, 09:47 PM
Diane - I didn't paint the shuttles first. I was going to, but then when I looked at the shuttle in the tutorial it looked like maybe the entire top of the shuttle wasn't covered with paper? I think I would paint the shuttle if I was going to cut out a flower or object to decoupage on. In any case, I do think painting first would affect the way the color shows through the paper. It doesn't seem like the decoupaged paper will come off, so hopefully the paint doesn't affect the "hold". (Yikes! I hope it doesn't start coming off as I'm concentrating on tatting a new technique.)

When I used the ModPodge on fabric, I traced around the shuttle and then cut the fabric a bit smaller so I didn't have to deal with trying to go over the edge at all. Plus, there's a little border edge of color. That was easier!

Your shuttles look nice and neat without paper over the edges - I would imagine that scrapbooking paper would be hard to fold down over the edges.

Scrapbook paper's weight depends on the manufacturer. Some papers can be pretty light weight, being almost comparable to copy paper, but others can almost be considered a lightweight cardstock they are so heavy.

Lace-lovin' Librarian

I didn't have any trouble tatting with the "bumps" on the shuttle. After applying the scrapbooking paper, I used two layers of Mod Podge. Next I added the "jewels" followed by three more layers of Mod Podge. I haven't dropped my yet, but I don't think they'll pop off with all that glue on there. I think all the layers of Mod Podge helped smooth everything out.

Judy:You like those bumps on the shuttle? Wouldn't the thread get hung up on them?

No, it just looks beautiful:tender:
In the first try with glue, I used the glue carefully, just a little bit, not too much. There was no problem with the thread.
The second time, I didn't have a tool to put the glue carefully on, and got too much glue. The consequence was, that the "jewel" is not smooth on the shuttle, sticked up "high"on it and there might the thread slip in. But not a problem at all, I will add some nail polish or mod podge around.
:emoji-E030:So my advise out of experience: don't take too much glue, press the jewel on the shuttle, put another layer around or over it to fix it from popping off. Don't drop your pimped shuttle!

I did one last night...late last night. I need to take it's picture tonight and post it here. I just hope I can find this thread again!

Took the pictures, and found the thread. Here's my shuttle. Flowers on one side and a butterfly on the other. The only thing I can really say about it is at least I only used one shuttle. A word of advice -- don't think you're an artist at 12:00 midnight and set out to prove it with old fingernail polish!

Your can use an very sharp pair of scissors and then use sandpaper the end smooth it or use a small hacksaw...I use a heavy pair of scissors like I use for cutting up chicken wings

Diane got me hooked. All of her shuttles were so pretty I thought I'd try it. I don't even know if the shuttles I've done are usable. Here they are tied up in my "finishing box" (so I could spray the fixative on them without worrying about them getting stuck to something while drying).
8468
I'll have to get them out tomorrow night and see if they work. I know the bobbins will fit into each one, and I think it will fit on the end for winding of all but two. The opposite sides of most of these are different than the front, too. But I couldn't wait to show them off! The paint is too thick and lumpy is some spots on some, the crystals stick up on others, and I have no idea if the thread is going to slide over them or not -- but I certainly had fun doing them!

Great idea for the spray booth Marty!

I literally dreamed that one up -- seriously -- I woke up thinking, "Oh, I have to do that right now or I'll forget!" So I wrote myself a note to read in the morning. My sister gave me a pen with a light in it for just those "ah-ha" moments. Sometimes the notes I make read like nightmares in the morning, but this one was a good one. I can open either side of the box and fasten the other so I can spray both sides without moving the shuttles. Then I can move them around for drying if the place I picked needs to be used for something else.

carolivy
29-11-2010, 07:16 PM
I have LOTS of those moments Marty, so I know what you mean. For me though, writing myeself notes doesn't work. If I don't get up and DO something about the idea, it just chases itself around my head all night and I don't get any sleep....sigh.
