I just ordered a lovely blackwork pattern and 1/2 yard of Cashel 28 count linen.
I've never done blackwork...but have done counted x-stitch, crewel work, redwork. and, of course I do Colcha embroidery on occasion...
But this will be my first outing with black work and I may have questions in the future.

I can't answer any questions. I have never done any form of embroidery--I hate the thought of threading needles all the time--but if there is anything that would tempt me to try it, blackwork is it. I think it is gorgeous.

I can understand that Karen....I stick myself all the time. However, what I usually do is thread a lot of needles in the colors I need...and that way I don't have to keep threading needles as much when I work. Kind of like having shuttle bobbins usually- wound in the colors I'm using. Usually, if there are good instructions; I can pull it off ~ but thought having a 'helping' hand as an SOS might be nice....Bev
I haven't done any blackwork, although I have instructions for a bajillion patterns LOL. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration.
I do a lot of different types of embroidery, and have some wonderful explanatory links and books for blackwork. If I can help at all, let me know, but I'd put money on it that you'll do fantastic without help.

I used to teach Blackwork in the US for the Senior Centre and at the highschool, along with a couple of other embroidery classes. Ask away!!
Feel free to pm me for my personal email or add me to your Instant Message. I am online a lot , as I have Fibromyalgia and sit on my sofa trying to learn to tat alot during the day, especially if I am in a flare, like right now.

Oh my dear ~ my daughter (Calgal on Intatters) also has fibromyalgia; you two should touch bases. She is learning to tat, mostly on her own; but I did get her past split rings. She, too, has terrible flares.
Thank you so much, I'll be contacting you. It's perfect, I am a Senior (LOL) Citizen and you've taught Seniors.
When my goodies arrive, I'll read them over and if I hit a snag; I'll know where to turn.
Be sure to go to CalGal and make a friend. She's a very nice person, too. Bev

Hey MitzyG, I also have FM and I have taught tatting online in the past with AKTatter in her online classes. LOL So feel free to give a yell. It looks like we could end up with a FM crafters support group before long.

Thanks, Tammy. I might be giving you a yell.
I have about 20 shuttles (my granny's and my aunt's, but they are gone now) and some thread and a couple of books. That is it. I am getting well stuck into it this week as I am on bed rest most of the week.
Might give you a hell if I have problems.
Thanks for the offer.
This is such a friendly group, I feel at home already!! Thanks.

I have done some blackwork and redwork combined with tatting. Haven't make any recently thou.
Wow! It looks like a lot of us suffer from Fibro or something similar. I have Lupus and one of the symptoms common on me is the fibromialgia. Now that I'm in a Lupus flare tatting is my refuge.

Soooooo, how' s that blackwork going?? LOL, got it done yet?
I went to the stitchery store today and the lady there told me we have a wiz-bang Tatting teacher here in WA and that she books through the Embroidery Guild? I am going to give them a call tomorrow and see if I can track her down. Anyone know who she was talking about?

Thanks everyone who responded Blackwork order hasn't arrived as yet...I'll let you know when I get started on it ~ may be a while because I have tatting priorities. LOL Tatting comes first! BlackWork is for those times when I need a short break from shuttles. (doesn't happen often)

 I would, but I've never done any Blackwork. My pattern arrived; and, it's similar to counted x-stitch in that you begin with a blank piece of linen (aida et al). However, there are a number of different stitches used and explained on the pattern I bought. I'm still awaiting the arrival of the Cashel linen I ordered upon which to work it...
It appears that it will take some time to accomplish a completion of this pattern...but SHOULD I ever get finished (tatting being my first love); I'll certainly post a photo.

I did some blackwork. It evolved out of my cross-stitch career. It is lovely and if you do x-stitch it shouldn't be a problem
I would love  to read any questions and answers on this topic as I've always been interested in Blackwork but have never tried it. I'd also love to see progress pictures if you are willing to share. :flowers:
Hi, I know this is kind of an old post but Im kinda new to Intatters... anywho... I have done blackwork and love doing it actually its fast and easy. I did a few for this site (she's is a great blackwork designer btw) so here are a few pics to see blackwork and I think she has tips on how to do it also. http://sites.google.com/site/wyrdbyrdsnest/ Under where it says free patterns is a slide show of her designs. I did four petals and urn it and the urn it I turned into a biscornu (which is another great project to do if you ask me.... )
I have never done blackwork, but I have done loads of xstitch. Blackwork looks beautiful, but I don't need another addiction!

I've done quite some blackwork, mainly during the time when I was into renaissance costume. I still have a blouse whose collar and cuff I decorated in blackwork.
The better half plans on doing a tablecloth with blackwork medaillons.

Thanks for the informational links. That will help me when, "I get round tuit" I have the thread, cloth and pattern….just need some time. But I prefer tatting! bj

Answering, even the thread began in 2009 : I have done blackwork, using backstitch, not Holbein stitch, and I ♥ blackwork!
I have a Drawn Thread alphabet in a drawer waiting to be finished ;)
I use Aïda 7 or 8 fabric, and black, dark, or variagated colour threads

Also replying to this older thread to let people know there is a Blackwork class being taught at this years (2013) IOLI conference in Salt Lake City, UT.
