I just want to thank Jon for her exceptional explanation on making split rings. I noted a number of people, including me, who had it on their "intimidating" list from another thread.
I read through her instruction and in no time - okay maybe 3 minuets - had it down. I really love the technique she describes of turning the tatting around. That was so much easier than attempting the spider hold.
Here is the link to her SPLIT RING (http://tatsaway.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-make-split-ring.html) tutorial. All of her tutorials are wonderful!
You really should write a book about how to tat Jon; you are a marvelous teacher.:thankyou:

it really is helpful.
I tried this split ring method for several years and got nothing but trashed thread. Then I discovered the dead spider and never looked back. Now that I understand the split ring construction from the dead spider approach, I can tat them this way too. But I could never learn them this way. Perhaps if I'd been following Jon, instead of Anne Orr, I could have got it. You are right, Antiquarian. Jon's explanations are always so clear, and the photos she posts are very informative. Did you see her link at the bottom of this tutorial for split chains? Brilliant.

It was Jon's explaination of the Dead Spider that helped me get them. I love that way!

I tried it yesterday, I didn't do dead spider I did by taking the tat off my fingers and put it back on after turned it around. first 2 times, I forgot I don't need to flip (it was ingrained in me, that I have to keep on chanting "no flip, no flip") that I didn't successfully do it until the 3rd try. what a rush it was.

Thanks PattyD, I am working on that simple African bookmark from Jane E via her friend Jane and now I can do split ring without chanting "no Flip"

I have something against spiders, dead or alive! So no dead spiders for me for the split rings, LOL. I take it off my fingers and turn the thread over for the unflipped side.
I am glad that my short explanation of the dead spider helped some of our tatters here.
Agree with you, Jon, about the arachnids. The only good spider is a dead spider. So I have no qualms about using a dead one to accomplish my goals. :whistling:

I don't feel like it is a dead spider. When I am pulling the stitches when I have my hand that way, I feel like I'm "closing the curtains" lol I don't lay my hand down, it it just palm towards me and straight up, keeping the ring tension very tight.
