Greetings to you all!!
My first thread start here in InTatters....woohoo.
I need your help. Here is a recent 'find' at a local antique store. It's an abalone shuttle with a metal post. If you zoom into the picture you see faded print.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what it may have said and where it came from so, I thought I'd throw it out to you all for conversation.
Thanks!
John

Hello, John.
Barbara Foster of Handy Hands used to sell abalone shuttles. It may be one of hers, or Barbara may be able to help you further.

It could be a shuttle that was monogramed for the owner, by the maker or the town where it was bought as a souvenir. Not enough of the name to research it. But who ever owned it loved it enough to use it.
You have a treasure there, do not be afraid to tat with it.

I wonder if it could be one of the Peter Cua shuttles which were so popular a few years ago? - I didn't buy one so I am not sure whether he used metal posts. Possibly yours is a lot older. Don't drop it on a tiled floor, it will break!

I just looked at my abalone shuttle. It has a wooden post, and the edges are chipped. It will be interesting to read what you learn about yours.

tattingjohn,
I love the piece of embroidery with tatting where you have arranged your shuttles to photograph them. Is it antique?

Judith, It's actually a vintage hanky that I've edged with tatting. It's a pulled thread wedding hanky...I think it's called madeira.

But, (said with a grin)....ya'll aren't helping very much here..... stop getting distracted by sparkly and pretty... Focus. Seriously, Ya'll are wonderful. I'm still trying to find the origin..but may never do so. But, you're right. I'm excited with it and will continue the quest.

Oh you lucky....I wish I can find that here. I didn't have much luck only found a book on my recent trip. Maybe, I should go more often.
