I use the same process my own teacher, Barbara, used. I start with 1/4" diameter silk cord, in two colors, to teach me how to "pop" the thread and how to recognize what a double knot looks like. When I had that down, she switched me to a shuttle with 2 colors of #10 crochet thread to practice making a chain. The practice piece can be used for the draw string on a bag to hold your tatting in. I used a purchased doily, lined with material, and then wove the "chain" as a draw cord. This can not only hold your materials when not tatting, but when you are tatting you can hang on the left wrist to control the "ball."

Next, she taught me a simple zig-zag pattern of chains and rings, which can be turned into a bookmark easily.

Hello,
I live in Chico, CA and have long wanted to learn to tat. I could drive up to Redding on a weekend for a lesson. Can someone give me a few lessons?
