Here is my first of the Round bags that I am going to be making. This one starts out with a 16" circle and I sewed in a felt covered CD. I'm not sure I like the size of this bag though. I think I need to buy full size material instead of fat quarters and start out with larger circles if I want the CD in the bottom.

These are fun to make.. I have some for sewing and smaller one for jewelery when I travel.

I have 3 more cut out and ready to sew together, but I don't think I will be putting the CD in the bottom of them.

Here is the next one made up. No CD in this one. I used the largest button I had to kind of make a botton in the bag, but I don't think it was big enough...sigh

I really like the materials that I used on this one though.

Nice bags :) Why do you want to use a button in the bag? Won't threads get hung up on it?
Have you considered using the mini CDs for the bottom of the bags?

Where can you find the mini CD's? I have one, but have never seen any others so didn't want to try using that one, in case I liked it...lol

My mom used the center seals for mason jars in the bottom of her bags. Works great! You can get them in various sizes. The one in my bag is a little larger than a mini cd and smaller than a cd.
Your bags look great

Thanks Marty. Never thought of using canning lids...I have lots of those! lol
No convenient hole in the middle though, to help keep it in place!!

Ahh, but I sewed felt around the CD's, so could do the same thing with the lids. Then after they have the felt sewn around them, I sewed them into the bottom of the bag (between the layers of the largest circle)

I just checked amazon.com and found several... here's one

If you plan to wash your bags, small circles of thin plastic (recycled from the flat sides of square containers) will work well in the base.
I found that lighter fabric is best for these bags as there is a lot of gathering around the mouth of the bag when it is closed. Jap silk or pretty synthetics work well.

Very cool LindaJo. Thanks. I will have to look out for more of these then. I only use old/non usable CD's in my crafting though.
Judith, I don't like sewing on slippery type materials, but the cotton that I used is fairly lightweight. Mine isn't gathered very well, mainly because I don't have the little thing to put on the cord to hold it closed. I just did a slip knot to close it, but couldn't get them really close to the bag, hence the somewhat open bag.

ooooh Carolivy---you did a good job on those bags. ALMOST inspired me to go back to mine, but that slippery material just did me in. I realize I could use a cotton fabric, and may do so at a later time. But right now, the little devil that resided in my bag still haunts me!! I do love yours thought!

Or try the plastic lids from nut containers___trim off the rim to any size you want. Or use any tin can lid. Cover the lid with fabric. (Use the old draw string pulled together and placed to the bottom)then a touch of hot glue to hold it in place.
Love your idea. Looks neat!!

Re-worked the second bag by sewing the one mini CD I had between 2 layers of felt and then sewing it into the center of the inside of the bag. I snugged up a button real tight in the "hole' of the CD, bringing the bottom of the bag snug up to the CD. I changed out the cord I had in it with ribbon as well. Now the bag can be tied closed with a bow.

Just had a thought! With a little padding you could convert that mini CD into a pin cushion in the base of the bag.
Also, if you have a double drawstring (as in the Origami bag) you won't need to tie it across.

LOVE the idea of the pin cusion Judith! I put in the buttonhole before I start sewing things together. No hand sewing makes this bag one of my favorites...lol I'll have to check out putting one in on the opposite side and see if I can get them placed correctly.
Thanks for the ideas.

Well, since I already had a few more bags cut out and ready to go (only had to sew the largest circle, then sew the bag together), I made one using Judith's suggestions. Getting the ribbons the correct length took a bit of playing, but I do like it this way. I used a Widemouth Canning Lid for under my pincushion, which has many layers of batting (don't have the powdered emery and this way it is washable)

I love this material! Gonna have to see if I can get some more of it next time I go to WalMart!

Just a thought for you...at Wal-Mart they sell the plain cork coasters in the housewares. I started using cork hot pads to crochet covers for some time ago and they were convenient for me to use when I block my tatting. I just lay a white cloth over one of the larger ones and then I can spray my tatting with water and pin as needed. Would something like that work in the bottom of your bags?

The widemouth canning lids worked great on the ones I made pincushions in and I can buy a box of 12 for a bit over $1 and they will be washable as well.

This is my plan. Make one of these, and fill it with shuttles and thread...waddya think:) Since I'm a newb and don't have much yet, I plan on having fun finding lots of yummy thread to fill it and I'm already falling prey to NETS (Not Enough Tatting Shuttles ) Syndrome.

Good plan for 2011, Vonnie.
Yes, that NETS syndrome can strike you badly! (From one who knows.)
Carol, glad the ideas worked. We'll have to call this the 'intatters' bag.
Can the needle tatters call it "stuff" instead of "shuttles"? I've just figured out a solution for needle tatters putting their needles in. I've got two small round magnets which could get t he same treatment as the disk at the bottom, but located in a different spot. The magnets I've rescued came from cutting apart old abandoned purses with a magnetic closing. They're now my parking lot when I have to put my needle down for a bit.
I changed out the cord I had in it with ribbon as well. Now the bag can be tied closed with a bow.
Nice adjustment.
Now how did you sleuth out that fabric with the tatted motifs on it for the interior?
Well, since I already had a few more bags cut out and ready to go
Now tell me you have a "cricket" or Krikut or however its spelled... or some other mechanical means to cut out all those circles..

All of the material is from WalMart. I just bought the $1 squares. I think I need to buy actual yardage though to make my bags larger. These are nice for small projects, but if you wanted to put several balls of thread in them, it would be rather snug.

Nope, no fancy thing to cut my circles. I lay out all my material together then put on my pattern, traced around it and then cut out 8 circles at a time. Just need goooood sharp scissors for that. I hav a pair of Fiscars that only cuts material and I keep 'em nice and sharp.

are the folks at in tatters not just the nicest people ever???!! Carolivy just gifted me with one of her beautiful bags! I guess she felt sorry for me talking about how I fought that slick, slippery material I was trying to use! iT is so pretty, and I spent most of the night last night putting things in and taking things out, just to see what I needed to carry in it first! thank you my friend Carolivy! you're the best!
