Carolivy and jamlover have asked about my huge shuttle in different places, so here is my reply:

Really, I use it in a weird way. I used it with waxed thread (which I don't recommend either, LOL!) so the thread is sort of stiff, and I can make a big loop with it, bend my finger together leaving the loop formed on its own, pass the shuttle, and then straighten my fingers and use them in the usual way. I only did a project with few stitches. I think if I ever want to use it again, I'll have the bolt cut.

(Links and pics later, as I run out of time now)

Pictures would definitely be interesting to see! Now, why would you use waxed thread? Curiouser and curiouser!

hehe!

Well, I had decided to tatt over a pair of flip flop beach sandals (http://www.intatters.com/album.php?albumid=243&attachmentid=9942) - and I did not want to use a thread that would be ruined soon. I had this waxed thread, so I finger tatted a ring with it, and even if it was laborious, it worked. So I needed a big enough shuttle to keep all the thread for the project - I did not fancy hiding ends with that thread! So, I copied the size of a tatsy shuttle (as far as I could tell from photos), cut two shapes from ice-cream tubs, a sewing thread core for the post, and kept it all together with the nut and bolt.

It worked, as in, I could work with it, and the shuttle full lasted for both sandals.

(uploading pics here not working, no idea why? but they are in my album (http://www.intatters.com/album.php?albumid=735) :))

Well, I'll be!! Yes, I bet shortening the end of the bolt would make the whole process easier.

It's great that you were able to improvise to do your project!

Absolutely marvelous idea as I hate to wind shuttles!

I am thinking, with the size mine has, I could probably even put the whole ball in there, LOL. I shall have to check when I'm home...

I have since dissassembled it, that is why it is not in my new shuttle collection shot. I plan on taking it to the harware store an buying a bolt that is the right length if I ever want to use it again.
