A lady has asked me to post my pattern here as she couldn't open it from the blog. So here is my Quatrain pattern.

I hope the quality is ok as I had to compress the file quite a bit. If anybody would prefer it, the original (larger file) is also available on my blog (link with signature below).

Frivole, you can put your patterns on 4Shared (http://www.4shared.com/) for free and then post the links and people then just download the files from there.

Thank you for sharing this lovely pattern.....I am a needle tatter (only about two months)and am fairly pleased with my sample but know that I have learned by tatting your "Quatrain" and hope to tat a 3 by 6 pattern piece as a runner for my dinning room table......this was my first square and I really like it. I am going to share even though I am a little intimidated by your perfect sample....http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc495/louineteague/tatting006.jpg

That's fantastic Louine! And you've only been tatting for three months? Thank you for showing us. I'm just delighted you like it enough to make a larger piece out of it.

That's what I'd like to do too eventually. But then I always get tempted by so many other things I want to try. Maybe once I've finished the hanky I have on the go at the moment...

Thanks again!

...this was my first square and I really like it. I am going to share even though I am a little intimidated by you perfect sample....

There are lots of different techniques used in this square. You need to get a hand for doing such a good job on it... so..:w00t::thmbup::flowers::hugging:

Albums have a size limit, so, if you begin to have things flow off your fingers and are very prolific, at some point you will have to take a sharp pencil to the album. Until then, its a record of your progress!

Beautifully done Louine! (If you decide to Upgrade your membership to Premium you have unlimited album sizes :w00t:)

Speaking about limited album sizes... how many pictures (or bites) can I publish when I am a "normal" member?

Okay, I'm confused.....I did not put the picture in an album, I used photbucket and a photo tag to show picture....where are the album links??

Frivole

Hi Louine,

That's fine the way you did it. It's just that you can also create albums in your profile and put your pictures in there if you wish. And by the way, you got me going with your idea of a runner... I thought I should also have a go at a larger piece using Quatrain so I started working on it yesterday!

Oh wow! That's beautiful-I am definitely going to try that thank you! I will start by trying to make a single motif to cover a hole in my blouse, and if I manage that I will do another one to match, and then I will try a runner!

Has anyone tried tatting Frivole's exquisite Quatrain motif in variegated thread? Would love to know if this one works well with variegated threads as well as solids.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much thread this pattern uses? I would like to make a runner but I'll need to order the thread. I'll do a test but I'm hoping to have some idea before I start. Thanks!

Oh IsDihara... "exquisite"! What a lovely word! You've brightened up my day! I have not tried it in variegated but would love to see if anyone does. In my mind I pictured it in solid colours but it may work in variegated....

Hi Mamagistra, I have written you a personal message. But a very approximate guess is 4m on one shuttle and 2m on the other (for size 20 thread). Probably better to do a personal test as I think people use a bit less or more depending on tension. I use "arm-lenghts" to measure my thread that way I don't need a measuring tape. I think I was doing three arm-lenghts on one and two on the other for this one.

You can get a basic idea of how much thread you need by measuring thread onto you shuttle tatting one motif and measure the thread remaining on your shuttle. Count the number of motifs you need for your runner and check against how much is on each ball you will be using on the project. Always get an extra one!!!!!!!
Each person tats a little different. The size of thread, tension, length of picots all effect the amount of thread needed. Good luck on your project and keep us posted.

Lovely design, Frivole.
Great tension and balance, and it creates a charming fabric with trompe l'oeil effects.
Any more to come?

I've been following this thread since the first post, so just thought I should add my two cents worth. As everyone else has already pointed out, this is a brilliant design. It reminds me of the late, great Mary Konior patterns. Keep it up, Frivole. With MK gone now, we are depending on you (and other designers like you) to keep those marvelous patterns flowing. Please take that as the encouragement it's meant to be and not as pressure to fulfill my wishes.

I'm happy to host any patterns for free - send me a PM with details and I can sort it out. This goes for anyone BTW, if it's tatting patterns I'll find the space for it!

Great Imoshen! Thanks for showing us.

Kersti, thank you, I'll keep that in mind for future patterns.

Lynn, just have to thank you for your wonderful comment!

I've just received my thread this morning to complete the project I'm doing with Quatrain so hope to be able to show you something soon.

Imoshen's photo with dappled sunlight made me think it was three dimensional. ... and then I thought... well, maybe it could be! If it were hung as she has it, and a little more ease were put into the top and bottom joins for the center round, and you skipped the joins for the sides, the center part could turn independent of the outer round. Would that outer round keep its shape? Would it have to be stiffened? Just a thought..

Roughly an two hours. I also made this pattern with Omega 2 nylon thread and one motif took the whole day. Nylon thread is alot harder to work with.

11088 I thought the 3D conversion of the pattern a great idea so I had to try it out. It's basically a wire core twisted to shaped rings. I highly recommend a good pair of pliers for all wire working, it was not kind to my fingers. 11089 I suppose I should have made those two connecting picots smaller. I gotta say I love this pattern.

Ah fabulous Imoshen. So is the wire actually tatted? Thanks for giving it a go. I would love to tat more, but I have four small children (three of them 3 and under) and we just made a cross country move. The cleaning and unpacking all falls to me. So while I feed the newborn I read threads... Looking forward to being moved in and having shuttle time. :)

Imoshen, congratulations! Great job. Now just where did you put the wire?

Imoshen
16-05-2011, 08:58 AM
The wire I used is just regular floral wire I picked up at my local Micheals store. It doesn't state the gauge, well it did but the sticker is covering the gauge. I tatted the thread onto it like I was working a split ring, with the wire being the stationary thread. Then I twisted the wire until it formed a ring (more or less) then ran the thread down the tiny loop where the wires overlapped and continued on. I did tat the DS like a normal DS, meaning I did not start with the second half of the stitch then tat the first hitch, like you would have when you do split rings.

Edit: The wire is the CORE THREAD throughout the entire motif. I basically encaspulated the wire and shaped it.

That is quite clever, Imoshen! That would be a great way to make ornaments!

Judy

Whew! Didn't expect that answer. It does look like a normally tatted motif-- great job!

Oh, you should try that with beads! Pretty. I tried something with wire once like you are talking about and it was a bugger. Good job!

To our tatters who do not speak American, Donna means the project was very tedious and frustrating - a real pain in the neck.

Thanks heaps Frivole - lovely pattern....I see it as a centre insert (2x8) into a runner with edge around it....I've been looking for something like this for some time...is there an edge pattern that comes to your mind that would suit this idea?

Frivole
15-04-2013, 02:34 AM
That is a very nice idea Tattalittle. I've done it the other way around too where I used a rectangle fabric centre and then tatted a "border" of Quatrain around it. Are you looking for a large border or just something to complete the edge?

Frivole
15-04-2013, 02:38 AM
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Frivole...
I'll add a small border - say, 1/2 the with of the quatrain...I'll look something from MK....with trifoils of something alike...but I like your idea about quatrains being border....hm....this would suit me well too.....I have an idea in mind and am working it now (just a small one - 4 quatrains in the middle) and will post the photo when done!
