This pattern was designed to practice the Single Shuttle Split Ring Alternative that I came up with. I used Lizbeth 20 Jellybean for this practice piece.

Single Shuttle Split Ring Alternative
1.Start the ring to the point you need the thread to exit the ring.
2.Pull the ring closed just to the length you need for the split part.
3.Use a crochet hook to make a join into the first stitch on the ring(only the side of the stitch that is closer to you, ie only one thread). Make sure you are not joining to the length of thread between the rings and make sure to re-tighten that first stitch after you do the join.(my ring I was doing backside tatting - you may have to adjust if you are tatting a front side ring)
4.Turn the ring over and use Dora Young knots to complete the ring. Make sure to pull them tight since you are working over 2 threads instead of 1.
Shown in a pattern the same as a split ring: example 4+4-4/4 would be 4 ds, join, 4 ds, picot, 4 ds, do the steps 1-4 as above with 4 Dora Young Knots.

Cut Tie Hide

I used the single shuttle split ring to hide the ends as described by PattyD and put into a pdf on Jane Eborall's site:

Would love to see other patterns using this ring technique.

Brilliant bit of thinking to come up with this, Rachael. Did you also use Jane Eborall's joining method that avoids the spot of color in the joins? I have been loving that gift from her brain cell # 3.

This will be great to take for tatting in public or to teach beginners. Thank you for the colorful presentation.

Well... actually, that Single Shuttle Spilt Ring Alternative is not such beginner stuff...
