View Full Version : Shuttle maker still in business?

Several years ago, I purchased a rosewood shuttle with a hook that was almost 3 inches long, had straight sides, and a post. Instead of "clack" tips, it had slits through which thread was wound. Since I just figured out the "slip and slide" method of tatting, I'd like to get another one, but I can't find the supplier anywhere. Some folks complained about how the thread was wound, but I liked it. Any memories of such a site? Thanks!

It doesn't ring a bell with me but I am sure there are others here that may be able to help out. I wish you luck in your search.

I have one of tupipwood but I think it is the same style. I had kept the paperwork and the info I have is Diana Schmidt 1676 Millsboro Rd. E Mansfield OH 44906. Phone 419-529-8876 and WWW.Turn-of-the-Century.com I did not check to see if the website is still up.
Hope that helps.

Oops. That should be tulipwood and the name is Diana Andra and William Schmidt.

I have some of Diana Andra's shuttles, and they are wonderful. However, she no longer makes them. I wrote to her several years ago, and I believe I bought her last one.

I did find a similar shuttle at the Lafayette Lace Days (Lafayette, IN) in April. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the vendor's name. Maybe one of the Lafayette Lacers would know. I chatted with the man for a few minutes, and I'm sure he told me he made the shuttle. Diana's shuttles that I own have one slit on the top and one on the bottom. This man made them with both slits on the same side.

could you post a picture?? I'm intrigued & I didn't find a tatting shuttle when I followed the link :)

Mine is wound into a project right now, but I'll see what I can do. This is definitely the right web site, and it does appear they have stopped making the shuttles. Bummer!

A photo would help. There may be someone who has one but doesn't use it/

Susie, obviously its not only rosewood shuttles you care about. I'm curious about how you go about carving corian shuttles.

Ambitatterous's blog from TUESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2011 has a picture of the shuttle in question. It is the rosewood one at the bottom of the picture of shuttles.

Re: Carving Corian -- Corian carves and sands just like wood. I use my Dremel with the "high speed" cutter bits (I have a medium ball shape, a small cylinder, a large cylinder, a cone, and a rounded cone). I also use a "tile cutter" bit to make thin slits like the rosewood shuttle above has. I have tried lots of different styles, and the one that matches the rosewood (with smaller holes and a longer post) is the kind I have found works best with the sizes of Corian I have.

It's interesting... It looks like it'd hold an endless amount of thread :)

along these same lines....I remember reading somewhere about the lady who made shuttles from old record albums. Anyone else trying that? I have some old 78's which are a little thicker and them some 33's. I would love to see how these would turn out.

I saw those too and would love to know how they are done as well. I have access to a ton of old vinyl records.

Hmmm not sure what maker that one is. Sorry I cannot help you this time. Although if you measured it you could perhaps ask someone like the boys at GR-8 to make up one the same? Or perhaps Dave at Grizzly Mountain Arts? They are quite helpful with stuff like that.

Last time I visited this message i was so busy looking at the shuttle that I missed commenting on the pattern in progress. Kudos if you recognize the pattern and can name it! Hint. Its time to start thinking about making it.

Hi Judy, it is one of the Wisemen's Camels. Don't know who's though, but I recognise it.
