Does anyone have instructions for covering a ring when you do needle tatting? I have looked and can not seem to find any. Thanks in advance.

IMHO (in my humble opinion) the long tatting needle may get in your way; even a short one might get you stabbed (use a tapestry or other blunt-tipped needle to avoid bloodshed). Actually, a crochet hook might be handier (another thought: you could also put single crochets around this ring...).
Are you familiar with "bridging" -- you can use the same finger english to put double stitches around this ring. The technique I use is basically the "Dora Young Knot" method -- there's a link to a video posted on this on one of the forums on this site. This method puts double stitches around the ring.
(Edited Note: "bridging" and "split chain" refer to the same idea: check the "Help with Split Chain" thread on this forum for more info -- there are several threads on this subject).
Elizabita prefers josephine knots (repeat one half of the double stitch over and over -- either half stitch will work). This method is shown in some vintage needlework books). You will need to "finger press" as you go to keep the knots from spiralling around the ring (unless you like the spiral look).
My preference would be to do this with finger tatting -- just like making knots -- perhaps with the assistance of a crochet hook.
Have fun!

To cover a ring I'd use a shuttle to wind the excess thread on. Needles would make it all to clumsy. Use the knotless technique of Dora Young. You can also add seed beads to put sparkle around the edge.
Crocheting over the ring would be faster, but it all depends on the finished effect you want.
Judith.

Some of the tatting books that are in Japanese print show a way to cover the plastic ring using needle and thread. You can use a regular sewing needle (or whatever needle has a big enough eye) to cover the plastic ring and follow the same motions that you would for the shuttle. You don't HAVE to have a shuttle to do it. If you google Split RIng you will come up with some split ring pages (my blog has some links to them)...you just use the Split Ring stitches to cover the plastic ring...only just imagine that the plastic ring is the "core thread".

You can use a tapestry needle and do the button hole stitch around the ring... it works up fast and is just like using a shuttle. If you want a tatting DS then you use the needle with an over and under then under and over to get the DS look... hope you understand this.

I have added something in my blog on Wrapping a plastic ring using needle (http://tatsaway.blogspot.com/2009/09/wrap-stitch-round-plastic-ring-with.html).
I must mention that I am not a regular needle-tatter so I am not sure if the way I describe works for sure. Would you try it out for me, please?

pollydoole--Thank you for asking this question! It seems like we needle tatters are often overlooked.
Thanks also to Jon Yuseff for putting up the needle tatting instructions!
