Way back in the day our first exchanges tended to be bookmarks. It's been a while so I think it's high-time that we had another!

The idea of an exchange is that you will be given a partner, you then tat up the item and pop it into the post.

Applications close 7th June.
Partners will be sent to you on 9th June by Private Message.
Exchanges must be posted by no later than June 27th.

If you'd like to participate in this exchange please complete the form.
(http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=cmVRYUxTb1UzV2p3S3NndnRLVDVQcVE6M A..)
A few common questions:

Who do I send to?
This exchange is a straight swap where the person you send an item to also sends you one. Your partner's details will be sent to you by the organiser.

How many items do I need to send?
Just one per partner.

A word on size
To ensure that this is a fair swap, you should aim to have your butterflies cover an area of at least half the size of a novel - so about 12cm or 4inches

I'm a total beginner, can I participate?
Of course! As long as you can tat the item being exchanged you can participate. And remember that even the most experienced tatter started at the same place as you did.

Is there a time frame?
You will be given a post-by date by the organiser. As soon as you have posted your item it's a good idea to drop the organiser a note to let them know you've fulfilled that part of the exchange. It's also nice to let them know when you've received your item.

Do I have to send anything else?
No. Although some like to include a note! You are only obligated to complete the exchange itself. You do, however, need to keep the organiser informed of the status of your exchange so we can note when it's all finished.

What if something happens and I can't finish in time?
Let the organiser and your partner if a straight swap know. Life happens, but generally if we're aware it's no problem. We're incredibly understanding here so don't fret, just tell us!

What patterns can I use?
You can use any existing pattern (check out the Pattern Library (http://www.intatters.com/library/browselinks.php?c=11), we'll be adding more and more butterfly patterns over then next week or two) or you can make up your own.

Pictures?
Yes please! If you can take a photo of your finished item and post it here we'd love to see it! That way you can share your exchange with all our members and we can all be insanely jealous of your lucky partner :)

Are there penalties if I do not complete the exchange?
Yes and no. If you do not complete the exchange and you do not let the organiser know you will not be permitted to take part in any future exchanges until your commitments have been finished. If, however, you are unable to complete and you do let us know so that we can organise a replacement tatter to honour your commitment for you, then you may be able to participate in future exchanges.

Anything else?
Participating in exchanges is incredibly fun. Many lifelong friendships have formed on the back of these. Why not sign up today?

Kersti

Could we then do a mltitude of say, butterflies on paper clips that together total that area, or just one butterfly?

Yes, the idea is that there should be a comparable amount of effort, one big butterfly is equal to multiple small ones providing the area covered is about the same.

Now I know that this does not take into account thread sizes, but it also does not take into account effort by individuals because of various handicaps or experience or techniques.

It's just to give an idea and try to make it fairer.

Having so much fun tatting an Inga Madson butterfly design. A bit advanced for me, but it's working out. Since I haven't been feeling up to par; tatting has been a great relaxation for me here in Sacramento. Different bedroom, different view! LOL But, I've seen all my grandsons...and was treated to a lovely dinner out by my SIL, Richard and daughter BB. Enjoying her lovely home in this quiet neighborhood.
My Son in love even popped his head in (from his busy work schedule) on my natal Day and brought me a hilarious card, a butter finger and a lovely cameo bookmark. What a guy! BB gave me the I-pod touch and 2 audio books and grandson set it all up for me...feel like a Queen. Plus we've taken care of lawyer business and bought our two crypts at East Lawn. I'm a scout! Be prepared! LOL It is a gift to my daughters, so when the time comes for our 'great adventure'...they don't have to deal with the minuteua!
My Butterfly has a soft green (Valdini) body with tiny pearls on its antennae. I chose it because it has small butterflys inside large butterfly wings...it's prob. an advanced pattern (no written directions, just visuals ~ Thanks Sue H for teaching me that some time ago) and it prob. has a bobble or two....but shaping up very nicely.
Well, time to fix dinner for the boys (I'm talking ordering in, here! BB gone until after dark with her work tonight ~ she's a type A...work work work But then; she does have 3 boys in University!)
Thank you for the birthday wishes and I just wanted to say hi to all...I don't have access to a computer all the time...but like the Terminator, "I'll be back." LOL

I've finished my exchange butterfly. It goes in the mail tomorrow. I have to post about having sent it today because I'm leaving for a 10-day vacation tomorrow! (Not a moment too soon!) I'm having a lot of fun making this butterfly! I've never made one before, and I don't think I've ever tatted anything with more than two colours before (and in finding the thread I discovered that the quilting shop 10 minutes away does have a huge range of colours of nice cotton, they're just all hidden away in drawers - very useful to know). I'm really quite happy with the way it's turning out... except it's going more slowly than it should. I was possibly a tad too ambitious in my choice of pattern.

Oh well, my last exam is on Wednesday, so if I have to spend all Thursday tatting, so be it! Such a harsh day that would be.

CindyK
20-06-2009, 02:30 PM
This is definitely fun, but equally frustrating as I play around with this new craft. I'm glad experienced tatters are patient with newbies :) I WILL be getting mine in the mail by the deadline, though. I am loving how it's turning out - even though it is taking me the entire month to get it done!

Dawn
20-06-2009, 04:36 PM
CindiK, I'm glad to read you are having fun with your butterfly! I'm still pretty slow with the shuttle tatting so I do other tattings with my needle just to keep from getting frustrated! :) Keep up the good work! :)

It is in "Tatted Animals" I was so tickled when I found a butterfly in there...even tho I did make two boo boos...
After doing the first side (after figuring out which direction the body was suppose to go), the second was easier....
It works up fairly fast, so I'll probably do another!
