I was wandering if there is a size 6 needle because when I needle tat with size 10 lizbeth cotton the size 5 needle must be too big as the stitches go lumpy however I can't fit the tread through the eye of my size 7 needle. :ermm:

Yes, there is a size 6 needle. http://cgi.ebay.com/SET-6-TATTING-NEEDLES-3-4-5-6-7-8-and-FREE-PATTERN-/120741943335?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1cc7d827#ht_1780wt_1139

This seller on ebay gives a set of needles (6 in all) and it has size 6 too.

I've used it with size 10 (Pearl 8) cotton too, and it works fine.

Hello Catriona and Uroojinator,
I have the same set of tatting needles, but they are not "true" tatting needles. First, the tip of the needle is sharp like a sewing needle. A true tatting needle has a blunt tip. Second, the eye end of the needle is flat and it is wider than the shaft of the needle. A true tatting needle is the same diameter from the tip through to the end of the eye of the needle. Mostly, I don't like these needles because of the sharp tip. I have stuck myself more than once so I won't use them anymore. I do wish that true tatting needles were made in sizes 4 and 6. A better match of thread to needle would give better results.

When tatting with size 10 thread, I use a size 7 needle.

my size 10 thread doesn't seem to fit in size 7 needle though.

You kindof have to flatten the thread with your teeth, then hold it tight in a pinch, but it should go through the eye of a 7. I always use the smallest needle I can possibly get my thread in and you can't tell from looking at my finished tatting whether I used a shuttle or a needle.

You can blunt the tips of the needles on sand paper or even the concrete! It works for doll needles too.

If the eyes of the needles are wider than the needle, it will make the stitches loose or if you make the stitches fit the needle you will have a hard time drawing the needle through the stitches.

wow, really? But so far my tatting on them has come out alright, the tips didn't seem all that sharp to be honest.

I have that set of needles as well (I didn't order mine from ebay but from directly from the company that makes them)......they aren't that different from the ones I got from HH but they hold up better for me because they have less nickel (I am allergic) in them an they don't "turn" and get almost rusty like the other ones I have bought do for me.
I think it is what you get used to.....

Beading needles can be used with fine threads, too.
