View Full Version : Tatting Wanted: Doodle Patterns

At the last Palmetto's meeting we were working on small items to give away at the State Fair in a couple of months. After the meeting I got to thinking about the many other patterns on the web. So I started looking for them and putting them together so I could more easily find them. Now I'm asking for help from others in finding these patterns, at least those on the web that anyone can find.
What do I mean by a tatted doodle? Something that takes just a few yards of thread, the stuff left over when you finish something else and you want to empty the shuttle, something that can be done (by most tatters) in a half hour or less. And most importantly something to give away to friends, family, and a stranger who sees you tatting and asks about it. Something to give away at demos. Something simple that new tatters can do and feel they have done something. Something that is easy to recognize when you see it, as long as it’s held right side up (top to bottom not right side/wrong side).
I went and put the spreadsheet on the Cloud as a Google Doc. The URL to find it is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkoEARicS6bVdEUtbEdxSTBBQWp4TVNNenhLYXVrU VE&hl=en_US
I'll be updating the Google doc as additional doodles are noted, in fact I found a couple by Lenore English that are already there.
I have divided my list alphabetically and a number of letters have no doodles listed. And yes it's a long list, but not complete at all. I would love to see at least one doodle for each letter (then tatters could do a small alphabet book for a child and have an example for each letter). If you know of any other doodle patterns please post the link to the pattern here, if you have a design for a doodle (either a letter looking for doodles or one that already has doodles listed) please share them. If a lonely letter makes you feel it needs a doodle and you get a picture in your mind please design one and share it. And share the letter it goes to.
I have not gotten to Jane Eborall's pages, nor Sue Hanson (although I know both have patterns that would fit) as I took the time to find others rather than get lost in their stuff. Feel free to point out specific ones from them to add. It's a long list, with some areas having more doodles than others. Other than the overall alphabetical sorting patterns were added as I found them.
I am posting the list in several different posts, it's just too long for one message. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
After much thought I will be adding the links people post to the list threads so if you see it in both places please thank the person who found it and posted the link for me to add..
Update Sept 4, 2011: I have put the spreadsheet I created on the Cloud, as a Google Doc. The URL for it is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkoEARicS6bVdEUtbEdxSTBBQWp4TVNNenhLYXVrU VE&hl=en_US
I'll be editing that doc as more doodles are found, in fact I found a couple by Lenore English I have added already, so please do check there as well as this thread. I'll be sharing the link with other tatting groups also.

Remember I am looking for doodles on the web. I know there are others in books but I want ones everyone can find. I can create a 'master list' and put it on Google Docs so anyone who asks for a copy can get a copy, and I can update it as new doodles are found.

No problem! I have been doing some tiny heart research aiming for a small heart links collection - a quite small project compared to doodles for every letter of the alphabet!
Good thing you are not doing it in any of the Scandinavian languages though - we have three more letters in our aplhabet LOL
Looking forward to see the alphabet complete! And let us know if you have problems finding some for some letters

I'll stick with the english alphabet. It's the one I know.
And how could I forget Ringtrim? He certainly fits.
There are a number of letters without any doodles listed so feel free to play with any you want. Y would have been on the 'none found' list had I not remembered Esther Parris's Yak. I thought I had seen a Playtapus somewhere here on InTatters but can't find it. Maybe someone else will find it for me.

Sherongb
28-08-2011, 10:01 PM
I am adding these URL's as they are posted to the document I am putting together. At this point I don't see a reason to add links to the posted lists here as they are listed in the posts. Or do you ladies thing I should edit the earlier posts so they are all there? But then I might run out of allowed space in the posts. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Re easter egg patterns: if they use just a few yards of thread and can be made by most people in under 30 minutes post them here.

Thank for compiling the list of doodles. I'm sure that took a great deal of time.
I think it would be nice if the new links were added to the posts with the original list so that all the links were in one place and that way people didn't have to search through the many pages. That may not be a problem on this forum but it is on some of the other forums I'm on.

Hi Judy and thanks for the eye candy. The purpose of this thread is to post links to patterns that fit the definition of 'doodle' that I gave in the first post. If Coretta puts her patterns on the web somewhere, either here in InTatters, on a blog or a web site, I'll gladly add them. I know she spoke about a pig pattern, and I would love to add that one if/when she posts it on the web.
I'll edit the first post to reflect that I will be editing the posts to include links people have found here.

Well, adding them two places is getting me mixed up so I'll update my list then, every so often, I'll update the first few posts.
I'm also going to use a spreadsheet as my list (rather that a word processing document) so I can sort by any column. That way all the butterflies will be together rather than mixed with the bugs and birds.

There are still lonely letters, without a doodle for them, waiting for someone to design a doodle for them. At this point I, J, N, U, V, X and Z are without doodles. Can you find or design a doodle for one or more of those letters?

Soyloquesoy: If you write up those stitch markers I'll add them. And if you find the hugs and kisses post the link and I'll add them also. And systematic or OCD??? The nice thing about putting it into a spread sheet is that it can be sorted on any column or filtered for any specific item so if you are looking for bugs you can find them, if you are looking for Jane Eborall's patterns you can find them

04-09-2011, 03:40 PM
When I want to translate a page I go to the page, copy the URL, paste it into my Google search box. When the search results comes up (and it's the top result on the page usually) at the end of the link is the phrase 'translate this page'. I click on that and get the page in (more or less) English (my language of choice). When I add the link to the list I use the URL for the translated page.

You could make colums for each thechnique (rings and chains only, rings only, chains only, split rings, ...) and make x-es at the techniques used. As it is a spread sheet we can then sort by technique if wanted (spread sheets are fun!).
Sherongb
04-09-2011, 09:37 PM
Yes, but I didn't note down which patterns used which techniques so I would have to go through them all again to get that info.
And you don't need separate columns for each technique. If you wanted to find all doodles with split rings you could filter on the term 'split rings' then only those would show. I do have to check though if there are several techniques, such as something that uses split rings and floating rings (just an example), in the same box will it catch either or only both.

Still learning Norwegian so can''t think of anything you could doodle for those letters. But might be a good idea to search in different languages and see if there are any usable patterns to add to the list.
List on google docs is a brilliant idea Sherongb (http://www.intatters.com/member.php?50-Sherongb). I will be sure to add some there when I find any new ones.
