hey everyone so this is my first thread that i have made and i could really use some help and advice. I REALLY want to tat a wedding veil (not that i am getting married though) but i do not have a good pattern. I do have an idea of using size 30 thread and making interlocking stars i would really appreciate some feedback on the idea and any patterns and or advice you would like to give me.

Mary Konior had several patterns that consist of regular bridal netting with some lovely tatting edging....on pg 26 of the still available book, "tatting with Visual Patterns" see Handy Hands or Lacis. But really if done in this manner, any edging that appeals could be added to a bridal veil. I understand that the weight of the tatting helps keep the veil in place.

I had a store-bought beaded lace sewn to my veil, it was beautiful and light, but stayed in place. As a plus, it also kept the bees out of my nose. (Outdoor wedding in June!) I know that there are netting patterns, perhaps not in tatting, but in crochet or actual netting, however, I think a tatted motif veil may not create the look that you're going for in a veil. It might very-well look like a doily on one's head. Then again, someone might prove me incredibly wrong. This being said, I suggest that you sew a nice edging to hemmed tulle, and that it will look lovely.

thank you both for the advice! I think that i really want to tat the entire thing and think that my future wife will really love it more then any store bought one. i will post a picture soon wodentoad that will prove you wrong about the motif in the middle of the veil. i am also very new to all of these terms what in the world is a hemmed tulle? guess that is what i get for being a 20 year old guy huh? haha i am lucky i even know the art of tatting. Robin i actually already own that whole pattern book (got it yesterday) haha so it is funny that you mentioned that.
Someplace on a French, Spanish, Italian website or book in one of those languages I saw a very light and airy veil that was a pattern consisting of a small square motif with lots of netting between the rows of widely spaced motifs. Waaayyy too fragile for a doily. It was only shoulder length -- looked perfect. I'll keep an eye out. I don't have a retrieval system that would find it. Linda Davies was responsible for creating one recently for her daughter-in-law. Check her blog.
update. Linda's was an edging, and the headpiece of tatted flowers that held it on.

I look forward to being proven wildly wrong and unimaginative. I hope one of our many fantastic members can post some pictures (if not a pattern link!) so I can see and be properly flabbergasted.

I look forward to seeing your veil. I think it's a lovely idea, and your future wife is certain to love it if you've created it yourself. Where and when did you learn to tat?:flowers:

well Janet i am sure my future wife will love it to bad i dont even know who that is yet though haha i learned to tat from my brother in law's grandpa in colorado about 5 and a half months ago since then there has not been a single day that i have not spent at least an hour tatting haha (mostly because it helps me get girls in school when i can make them ear rings) i absolutely love tatting though for the pure relaxtion part of it. it helps me wind down after a long day of tests and homework and i am very glad i found this site

To do a complete wedding veil in tatting will be quite a job. You could start by checking out mantilla style wedding veils to see shape and size. Then look for motif patterns to suit your idea and add till you have size you desire. I went with the simple adding of an edging inside satin band on a premade tulle veil for my daughter. Photo in my album.

somewhere in the Internet I saw a wedding shawl that was entirely tatted..which is a variation on an idea of a veil. Very romantic to start in a veil for an as yet unknown bride. The shawl would have the advantage of being used afterwards at a reception. As far as making a veil for your as yet unknown bride..I would suggest as you tat, to visualize her personality and your future together. You could actually, esoterically speaking, draw her to you when the time is right for a marriage.
