After i close the ring, I use the needle to poke thru the picot and give it a little tug. I do the same with all 3 types of tatting. if it misshapen, i give it a little tug with the hook end of my Aero or a small crochet hook, that fixes it. Don't worry about it getting twisted on the needle, it can be fixed after.

This thread has a number of suggestions, all by shuttle tatters. IMHO, post number 8 shows the join in a manner that's easy to understand and totally adaptable to needle tatting and is the method I use. Note how the work is held and how the already completed stuff is tossed over your hand out of the way. Where the shuttle goes through the loop... hang the loop on your needle, and then continue.

When i join with needle tatting, i hold the work facing me so the needle is behind the work. Only thing that is in between the work and the needle is the working thread, (the one you use to make the stitches).
