I remember seeing some really small shuttles, I think on e-bay. They were pictured next to a penny and they were only slightly bigger than the penny. At the time I wasn't interested. Now that I have decided that I need one, I can't find them. What I want is a small shuttle to use when I'm getting close to the end of the thread, so that I don't have to finger tat. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

These shuttles are a little bigger than a penny. I bought a pair last November when Jeff''s wife brought them to our guild meeting. The jump rings holding the ear wires could easily be opened and removed. They are not connected to the shuttle at all but sit just behind the points. I'm sure if you ask Jeff, he would sell them as plain shuttles and not earrings. He will be a vendor at Shuttlebirds in April.

And for those of you that like using flat shuttles, there is another shuttlemaker from Spokane selling on eBay under the name of 2hellmans. I bought one from him this week made from blue agate. I've never really used the flat style of shuttles but it is gorgeous. I'm hoping he will also be a vendor at Shuttlebirds but he hasn't committed yet.

Hmmm....have you considered using a sewing machine bobbin? These are a bit larger than a penny, and you need a design that is smooth on the top and bottom without features that catch the threads. I've tried it: a bit awkward, and bobbins roll off when dropped sometimes, unlike shuttles. If you have a shuttle with a bobbin, you might try that bobbin without a shuttle.

....there are others.

I made a little 1" shuttle out of polymer clay. Worked really great for those small projects.

I cheat when I get down to the last little bit of thread. I either tie the end in a square knot to the leftovers on another shuttle and continue tatting, or, if I need to finger tat something, I tie the thread to a paperclip. Just a thought.

I made some tiny shuttles a while back but have not been making any lately due to health issues. Check in my shuttle album.
This is the smallest one I made:

The dolls shuttle was a close second:

I knew I had seen mini shuttles on sales somewhere, and here they are: http://www.tatsall.ca/tools.htm
Unfortunately, they seem to be just about sold out. Anyway, give it a try!

Thanks so much for helping me look. I fell in love with one at http://www.lacis.com/catalog/data/AB...tles.html#TS40 (http://www.lacis.com/catalog/data/AB_TattingShuttles.html#TS40) Naturally it is one of the most expensive. Champagne taste on a beer budget yet again. I am going to order the earring ones on e-bay. I had seen them before but didn't read the part that said you could tat with them. I think 2 for $10 is a good value. I'm off to e-bay. Thanks everyone!

My father's version: champagne appetite on a beer income (he would often tell me) :D

Save a few plastic bread tags. Tie the very end on then wrap what you have left for thread. They're small and a little awkward, but they're better than trying to finger tatt.

That is a great idea. I'll try that soon.
