View Full Version : October Tatting Challenge - Tangled Threads

October's Tatting Challenge is inspired by Imoshen.

Use that thread you have that's been lurking at the back of your stash box, you know, the one that you're not comfortable using cos it's an odd size or perhaps it's a strange fibre or even a colour that just isn't your favourite.

Tat something with that thread and post it here for all to see. Tell us what the thread is, why you avoided it for so long and will you use it again?

Added bonus points go to anyone who tats something from the tatting library that doesn't yet have a picture there and then lets me use their picture!

OK, this is fun - sort of. LOL!!

I have this ball of thread I picked up on a whim, because I like the color & feel of it. I had already tried it once, it knotted, so I stuck it in a drawer not liking it much.

I decided to give it a try again for this challenge. Now, I've had to start this project over 3 times! Definitely cursed thread!! :yuk:

We'll see how try #4 goes! My new motto: "Never let the thread win!"

I've got a whole BOX full -- I bought it on-line on sale. No wonder it was on sale. It's so soft it's like tatting with mush. I'll try it again, though. One more time -- then I'm going to crochet with it. Dishrags I think -- that'll show it.

Oh, this will be a fun challenge. We all have thread lurking about that we're afraid to pick up. I can't wait to see what everyone ends up doing with theirs!

I have a size 20 red rose, muticolored that I had bought on an impulse! I don't quite like it as the hues are hideous. Let me see if it works out. By the way, when is the deadline?

I have a thread that I have shoved wayyyyy... down in the very bottom corner of my thread basket.(trying to forget I even bought it) It is slippery and I hated it but, I am willing to try it again! I do enjoy a challenge and this one sounds fun, so why not!!!

If I can figure out my new MACBOOK secret of scanning and uploading photos, I'll join in to the fray (oooh awful pun). I'm currently trying to upload Design-tat homework. I need to sync my Mac to the printer; and to the canon scanner. Perhaps I'll be able to do this by the end of Oct. I'll give it a go! LOL bev

I used my discarded multicolored red rose thread to tat the "daisies and clover doily" from the pattern laibrary over the long weekend, in addition to steph's motif and also a spinning wheel. And guess what? The colors didnt look that bad!!!!!! Any added marks for uploading pictures before the onset of October? Waiting for someone to take pictures so I can upload them.

OK, so once in my life I am ahead with challenges. I just completed the celtic knot pumpkinhttp://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Glb_bnBVnI/Srsg5VSUksI/AAAAAAAABu8/K0tnWtsKcCE/s1600-h/Celtic+Pumpkin.jpg
I'm not sure if the link will work, if not it is in my "Artylady" album (sorry but I'm new to attaching images here).

Prescisely! I've no blog currently (am working on it gradually) and so far I have learnt only uploading pictures from my laptop in my album page. Can I upload the picture of the October challenge "daisy doily" in one of my albums?

Yes - please do add it to your albums!

Aaakkkk. I'm still struggling with mine. This thread is too soft and it twists very badly. I ordered two lucets and some how-to books the other day. When they get here I'm going to see if my nieces want to take all this thread and learn to make lucet braid. (Thanks, LadyShuttlemaker (http://ladyshuttlemaker.blogspot.com/2009/09/camp-wanna-giggle.html) for the inspiration!)

I tatted up Totusmel's Mask. Done with 4 strands of purple DMC embrodiery (sp?) thread color 550. I made 2 obvious mistakes on it, can you see it?:innocent:

I finished!!! Now I just have to weave in the ends and block it -- it's a rumpled mess right now. Then I'm never using this thread to tat with again!

PattyD

Gutterman 100/3 silk

Qualties: very soft, easy to snag and the colors are drop dead gorgeous
works well, but doesn't like very small count rings because the thread relaxes and the ring sort of slumps. With enough DS in a ring, they close and stay. Picots also need to be a little bigger to stay open, otherwise they mush into a lump.

First project is Linda Davies' Heart (http://www.intatters.com/album.php?albumid=21&pictureid=2164)

I found some DMC Coton Perle 8 in green in my box of threads. The last time I used this thread I didn't like. I must say I still don't care for it:mad:. It splits and I didn't think the picots stood out very good. But at least I have completed the October Tatting Challenge - Tangled Threads. I used a pattern from the library that was missing a picture. I did the "Dhamana" bookmark designed by Christiane Eichler.

Oh Goshes, if I don't go down stairs and get my unruly thread (Yuli ~ holographic very slippery~) I'm not going to make the deadline. Well, I have my "have to" motifs finished; so can move on to the Oct. Challenge. LOL Bev:cool: BTW not doing anything fancy, just a basic motif...

So I have this thread that I got from my mother. She let me have it because she hated it. I was intimidated to use it because of her dislike. I wanted it because it has vibrant rainbow colors and I had wanted to tat a parrot pattern I had seen online a long time ago. So I embarked on the challenge and went and found it and started to tat the parrot. I'm about half done with it and now I know why my mother hated this thread lol. I don't know what kind of thread it is or what size because she lost the label before I got it. It's a bit on the large side. The main problem is that it doesn't slide well so it's hard to close the rings.

I've also decided that I HATE this pattern! LOL I counted and when it is done I'll have at least 20 ends to hide.

I'm seriously considering abandoning the parrot and making something else for the pattern. I hate hiding ends. Plus I had my thread break when I was closeing a ring for the third time after picking it out twice to fix a mistake. This thread it a nightmare. LOL

Oh Tarie you poor thing! Was that Mary Parrot's design by any chance? I'm sure we could find you an alternative.

Do keep what you've done and show us a picture, even the bad pics are interesting :) And if you want something small to tat with that thread, how about some little fishies? (http://www.intatters.com/library/showlink.php?l=89&catid=10)

I just checked and yes it is Mary Parrot's design. It's a cute parrot and all I just hate hiding ends. I can't help thinking that if she had just used a few split rings besides just the tail that a lot of these ends could have been avoided. I suppose a big part of it is I think she changed threads several times. I don't have any other thread I could use with this stuff that is torturing me so I was going to do the whole thing in a rainbow variageted. To be honest the thing that discouraged me was when I was getting ready to do the split ring tail when I had just finished winding a large amount of thread on two shuttles and I realized the pattern says to do the tail in 3 seperate sections and if I started the next part with what was on my shuttles I would end up wasting a large amount of thread. I was exasperated. LOL

I have finished my October challenge and now I know why I hated this thread. The thread is Sulky 100% Rayon, size about 100 (what was I thinking when I purchased this? Yikes!!) It has very pretty colors but it is slippery to tat. I had to tie every ring at the end to keep them closed. I did the little fishes as I did not want to do a large project with this thread. They came out cute but grrrr.... The thread is yucky to work with. I am not sure where I am suppose to post them but, I have added them to my album.

:furious:AGHHHHHH! :censored:I spent all afternoon fighting with the holographic YLI thread (size 100) and it just kept breaking! I would get a couple of rings and chains and SNAP! So I've gone to my second choice and am making a brownish buterfly; so I'll call it a moth! LOL Bev

Thanks, Bev! You should see my "shoelace" -- it's about 6 feet long. :) I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but it was fun to make. Now I need to dig into the books I bought and see what I can do to fancy it up!

I'm almost done with my scarf, although to be honest I think I need another row or two. I used a couple of balls of DMC Senso Harlequin which I had sitting around cos I loved the colours and the softness of the cotton/microfibre blend but which I'd never used because it's too thick for the shuttle. However, perfect for needle. The thread info is here. (http://www.dmc.com/majic/pageServer/0s010101cb/en/ccard-art770.html) The pictures are here. I finished my my October Challenge - I made 'Sophie' in Knit-Cro-Sheen size 10 Deep Coral. I have two balls of this thread and I can't remember why. It's not a color I would normally choose and I haven't used Knit-Cro-Sheen for a long time, not since I discovered thread like DMC Cebelia and Perle Cotton. It doesn't have a nice 'slide' to it, which I'm used to, so I broke the thread once because of it. It's harder on the hands than the threads I'm used to, also. I suppose I could use this thread again if the right project comes up, but I think I'll see if any friends that crochet might like it. A picture of it is in my album.

I just posted my picture of a heart I did with a thread that has a metalic thread runing around it. If you do not take care it can be a big mess. Doing anything to big is very hard to do.

Okay. Here's my snowflake. The thread I used is this pink/blue/yellow stuff in size 50 Omega. I've got a whole box of this Omega thread and I really dislike it for tatting. It's three cord soft twist and it untwists itself, double twists itself, knots, frays, and fuzzes. I won't be tatting with it again. I don't like this color either. In fact, I don't like it so much, I didn't even weave in the threads or block the piece. :yuk:
I've found I can make lucet braid with it, and I think I can probably crochet with it...but no more tatting!

http://www.intatters.com/picture.php?albumid=239&pictureid=2607Here is my parrot I made. I don't know the size of the thread or what kind of thread it is because there was no label when I got it from my mother. I do know that I HATE this thread and I will NEVER use it again! LOL I am glad we had this challenge tho because I've been meaning to make this parrot for years. I have not really finished it yet. I still have to do the beak, feet, and perch. There is a wad of thread by the head that I am saving for this purpose whenever I feel I can stand the thought of working with this thread briefly. LOL
