What is Jiffy Needle Tatting? How is it different from regular needle tatting?

Jiffy is an early brand of tatting needles.

Jiffy Needle Tatting is different in that it uses a separate core thread. This is very useful for two reasons. If you are using an expensive thread, you can save money by using an inexpensive thread for the core thread. Also, using the separate core thread prevents fraying or breakage on threads that are textured or ones that have a metallic strand. The books have instructions and patterns. Sometimes they can be found on ebay or other sites that sell used books.

I have one of the books and find it a little confusing ...however, I have used very thin thread (with smallest tatting needle) as the core thread before and the needle thread 20 and my tatting looks more like shuttle tatting.

Can you please post a pic of your jiffy tatting?

It looks like any other tatting... I followed the patterns and have made items using ordinary needle tatting needles, and ignoring the special jiffy directions for set-up. I don't have any in my albums currently. One of the three books by Ed and Selma Morin, which is the volume I own, is focussed on Christmas items. Stars, snowflakes, bell, stocking, tree, and so forth in the patterns section. The Morins get a lot of credit for popularizing needle tatting.

Hi! This does not have anything to do with your thread. I just wanted to say Hi. I am also from Baltimore MD. Sure is nice to know someone else from the same area is on here also. I have never tatted before. I have been crocheting for over 40 years. I am really interested in learning though. I have bought many patterns, and also a CD to teach myself this beautiful craft. I crochet whenever I can steal the time to do so. :-)

Jules, if you'll just steal a little time for tatting, you'll have it learned in a jiffy.!! Are you buying single patterns? I only have a couple of those. I do buy books, though. If you're looking for something (sort of general), you can involve us in helping you find it for free.. Just tell us what you're looking for... booties, masks, earrings, snowflakes... we got a long list when you add up all the patterns we know.
