I was just browsing eBay for tatting related items and ran into this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unusual-Tatting-Shuttle-/160809099772?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2570f821fc#ht_500wt_922

Can you believe the current bid? The description doesn't Say it's an antique but it does look old.

I can't believe this bid. These are really serious collectors bidding on this shuttle. Wonder if they are also tatters. Can't imagine anyone putting that much money into a tatting shuttle, no matter how old or unusual it is.

Well, at least the shipping is reasonable. . .LOL!!

Well, it looks to be silver plate and not sterling silver, so I doubt the amount of silver is really part of the value. It's clever. but US$ 2045????????

I can't believe it an actual antique tatting shuttle either. Years ago (probably in the late 70's, early 80's) this country went through a phaze where old silverwear was re-purposed. I have a plated silver fork with that exact design on it. Very injenious use of fork/spoon handles, but I don't think it is an antique....rediculous bid though...

It looks to me like to cutlery handles put together to make a shuttle. I have cutlery that looks just like this. Seems like an awful lot of money when it's not even silver...

It could be made out of diamonds and I still wouldn't pay even a fraction of that price.....I don't even buy a cheap clover 2-pack unless I have a 40% off coupon! HA! Am I cheep or what!

Unbeliable I won't be bidding for it, I agree it does look like two knife handles put together. I wonder who will buy it, I don't think they will get a bargin, as I am sure it's not real silver.

The description plainly states silver plated brass. Unusual design and ingenious, looks like it would hold well too.

Good luck to the seller... Ebay is a funny place. Prices on things are all over the map. Two identical items can sell for wildly different prices.

Good grief! I can't imagine paying that amount for a shuttle, even if I was a collector. Its strange to see this posting, as I was surprised by another shuttle on ebay. A couple of days ago a Milward shuttle sold for £202. It was unclear whether it was plastic or wooden, and shuttles of the same design had not sold for £10 or so previously. I was rather perplexed, but now feel that it was a paltry amount compared to the silver shuttle. I wonder what the final bid will be?

Wow I saw this one when it first began, cant believe the bidding has gone so high ! O.o

And yes, I think it's 2 re-purposed bits of cutlery. Looks interesting, but why has the bidding gone crazy ? !

I think the most I've ever spent was for a Gr-8 shuttle that had a gold cross charm inlaid in the shuttle. Between the gold cross and the actual shuttle, it was probably close to $80. The most I've spent for a shuttle I USE very often is the silent tatter that is "fake ivory." (Still sold on the Roseground site.)

I paid $115.00 for the carved shell shuttle with the scalloped edges (pictured in my shuttle comparison. I have purchased several from this seller for my collection and she has had some that are unique but went way too high on bidding. She is a good seller in my opinion.

Ugh! Ebay... I don't shop from ebay anymore. Not since I found out one of the items I last bid for, I was out bidded by the seller!! And then he/she had the nerve to email me, telling me that if i didn't bid higher, I would never get to buy anymore things from them.

On topic, I think its an unusual looking item. But i wouldn't pay that much either.

This is exactly what I was thinking about this particular listing. What is to stop someone from having multiple eBay accounts to run such a scam? I usually bid once or twice and then give up if I get outbid. I haven't won an auction on eBay in quite some time.

I started out bidding on old tatting thread when I didn't know what i was doing... sigh. I only bid once or twice, too.

It was fun seeing the unusual shuttle and the outrageous price! Me, I bought a couple of Silent Tatters at £21 each + shipping, and I do feel they were worth it. But, I'm finding that really I prefer plastic Aero shuttles... Actually, I might be willing to pay a fair amount for an Aero-type shuttle where you can change the hook so you have different sizes for different threads. Has anyone seen something like that?

susiearnholt

It isn't that hard to remove a hook from an aero-type shuttle, use a bolt cutter to shorten a crochet hook, and then glue the size you want. If you like "pretty" aeros, LaCossette on e-bay has some nice ones right now.

As far as "bidding on your own thing," if you report someone who has done that to e-bay, they will OFTEN revoke their account. It is bad for e-bay business to have sellers doing that.

who among us would pay that much for a "pieced together silverware" shuttle? Especially with people like Rachael who are able to make such gorgeous wooden ones. I LOVE the teak one she made for me. My other favorite is the bone one I had made in the Dominican Republic last year. Real crafters! There are others here also that make truly beautiful shuttles, real works of art. I hope whoever ends up with it isn't toooooo disappointed!

I've noticed some strange bidding on ebay, too. I have bid on some items that seem to be languishing with no bidding action. As soon as I bid on them suddenly there are two or three bidders. I immediately stop bidding, because I know that I am dealing with dishonest dealers that are trying to manipulate me into paying more for an item than is fair. This practice is rampant, because it has happened too often on too many different types of items for it to be a coincidence. I still browse eby, because there are plenty of honest, dependable dealers on eby with which to do business.

I admit I'm not a fancy shuttle person. I buy the 5 pack clovers where ever I can get them cheep. They are the perfect size for my hand and tatting style. They have that lovely grip texture in the middle. They hold more than enough thread for my projects and if I loos one it's no great loss. *shrug* I don't see the need for anything that isn't practical. I'd rather spend the money on other things. Like antique books or trips to really amazing places. *smiles*

I guess I will give that a try one day. Need to get a bolt cutter first! I suppose one can have a stable of Aero shuttles, each with a different size, rather than dream about having one where hooks can be interchanged like drill bits.

I only bid on items that are almost ended to ensure that I am the only one getting them or the item has a buy now option.

I stopped bidding on e-bay as well. I shop on etsy because you know what you are paying up front. I have "lost" a lot of auctions by a couple of dollars and been offered "second chance" by the seller.

I just checked E-bay and the seller has the same shuttle for sale again for $20.00. It definitely looks to be made from old silverplated flatware. I sent the seller a message asking her if it was made from flatware. We'll see if she replies.

What!!!!! $20 vs the $2000+ that it was? What's up with that?? I was cleaning out one of my desk drawers here at work yesterday and found a pen that appears to have a "silverware" handle. Wonder how my hubby would like a new project....turn that into a shuttle big boy!! Don't look for it on ebay!

I checked with the seller (OK. . .I'm curious!) and it is indeed made of old silverplated flatware. She said it did not sell because someone made "a big bidding mistake".

It is the most probably explanation, yes. Specially considering not everyone in the world uses a point to indicate the "decimal point" (in Spanish we use a point to seaprate thousands and millions, and a coma to mark the decimal place)

Apparently someone meant to bid $22.00 and ended up bidding $2200.00. Don't you know they were in a panic when they saw what they'd done.

This sounds like something I would do. I have discalcula, which makes numbers misbehave rather badly at times. Add in a few 0s, and it's anyone's guess what I'm likely to see or write. But I'm glad to know that no one is really bidding that much on a shuttle. There are still sane people left in the world.

I would not buy THAT shuttle but I have paid A LOT for a Dacid Reed-Smith shuttle. He used to post them as auctions and I have to admit I spent about 70 or 80 dollars. Still have it and love it deeply! sadly I had another I broke and dont think it can be repaired. Bummer

I've just bought my first lacossette shuttle and love it to bits, it cost about £13. Other than that I've only got the 5 pack of clovers. I've seen a lovely one by beadinmama on etsy for $33 but it wouldn't last long with me, its more a collectors piece. It's very pretty, called old monterey if anyone is interested.

Just went to have a look and those Beadinmama shuttles look really interesting, I love the look of some of them but I would only guess that they would be rather heavy. I already find the metal Boye shuttles too heavy to work comfortably with so if you then cover them in polymer clay... but great-looking!

Hi Everyone, I have spent a lot for a single shuttle :) I guess us collectors can go a little crazy sometimes ... Cant really explain it, but sometimes it is that one piece that you NEED to make your collection COMPLETE and you MUST get it. (As I said we might just be crazy).

I think I inherited it from my grandfather, he has quite a lot of collections, and I have to hear my grandma, aunt and mom preaching of how he spends some much money on "trash"; inside of me i think "I get it", of course I never tell them that :)

As per the shuttle on eBay, it is nice, but there is no collectors value that item.
