A request to verify my tutorial

I received a comment from a needle-tatter that my instructions for wrapping stitches round a plastic ring using a needle does not work. This is the tutorial (http://tatsaway.blogspot.com/2009/09/wrap-stitch-round-plastic-ring-with.html) that I am referring to.

I have gone over the steps again and have not found anything that may not work.

When I wrote this, my mind may have been working as a shuttle tatter and there may be aspects of needle-tatting that I don't know about.

When I first wrote that tutorial I did asked for some tatters to test it and have not received any comments that it cannot be done the way I explained.

Please, I am requesting from some needle-tatters who are reading this, to test the instructions for me again. This is important because these instructions are also included in my book Tatting With Rings. That book was published several years ago and I have not received any comments regarding this part of the instructions since then. I am in the process of revising the book and if indeed there are errors, this will be a good time to make the amendments.

I plan to become a needle tatter later this year, and so am looking at all tutorials I can find. First of all Jon, you obviously did do this with a needle, and it obviously did work. Did you ask the needle tatter who made the comment for further insights? Perhaps there is another way that is preferred. But as we all know, there are multiple ways to accomplish the same goal. Sorry I can't be helpful, but I will keep an eye on this thread for further comments.

It works for me. There are other ways to do it as well just like there are many different ways to form the ds that all turn out the same. Please don't let this person discourage you.

This particular thread brings to mind the difference in needle tatting and tatting with a needle. In the former, the double stitch is formed around the needle and then the core thread pulled through to form the tatting element. A needle can also be used in the same manner as a shuttle; after all, a shuttle is simply a tool to hold thread in a convenient manner.

Using a threaded needle to create double stitches is useful in more than covering rings as Jon demonstrates. It's easier to use a needle to repair heirloom tatted pieces than a shuttle ... at least that my 2 cents worth.

I am not discouraged by the comment made. I just want to make sure of the facts in the instructions as I have written them. I do agree that there are many ways of achieving the same effects in tatting and none can be said as being wrong if it gets you to where and how you want it to be.

I do love Patty D's quote "The knot does not care how it is made".
