First: use 2 shuttles. Shuttle 1 forms the normal rings. Use the thread from shuttle 2 to make chains and to make the floating rings.
Shuttle 1 makes a ring, shuttle 2 forms the stitches on the chain and also makes the floating ring. A floating ring floats off of a chain. After completing the floating ring, shuttle 2 again provides the thread to form the stitches on the chain.
O < ring with shuttle 1
------------------------------ core thread of the chain - shuttle 1
uuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuu chain ds formed from the thread on shuttle 2
.....................O.................. floating ring formed by shuttle 2

Very cool demo! I'm sorry to say I'm still lost as I'm a Needle Tatter. Is there a "comprable" way to do this with Needle Tatting and WHY would you need to have the chain coming out of the side of a ring instead of the bottom of it?....confused still...sorry

Thank you! Now that I see it done with a Needle, it makes perfect sense! Looks kind of interesting too...now to find a pattern that calls for that!
