I've just purchased some 25cm mattress needles which struck me as possibly being useful for needle tatting. Unfortunately no thread at the moment but was wondering if anyone else has used these?

where did you purchase mattress needles? I will check out the upholstery shops around here.

I got them in a John Lewis store in the habadashery section - was most surprised to see them

Totally off topic:

A John Lewis store?? My grampa's name was John Lewis. :)

When I first learned how to do needle tatting I used a Doll needle. It was sharp on the end and I just used an emery board to blunt the end. I used size 10 crochet cotton to learn with. When I found I loved the needle tatting, I went out and bought all of the "correct" needles, but still have that needle...lol.

Any needle can work as long as the eye end is not thicker than the rest of the needle. The needle is used as the base to work the stitches on. Then it is used to pull the thread through those same stitches to form the ring or chain. You might have to file the tips to make them safer on your fingers. I have even tatted with my quilting thread on my quilting needle just out of curiosity. That was intensely tiny, but I made a tiny ring. So it can be done, if you are determined to work at it.

How long is a "normal" tatting needle and can you use things like tapestry needles?

Jenni, needle tatting is not the same as inverted tatting - the needle has to be long enough to hold all the stitches before you turn them into a ring. You tat ON the needle. Strictly speaking, I suppose it's not traditional tatting, becasue there's no flip.I went to a class once, many years ago, well before I discovered shuttle tatting. It's hypnotic and addictive, making the stitches on the needle, but it's just not portable!
