Has any one tried needle tatting some ofJon Yusoff patterns from his new book tatting with rings. I have noted that she says that it is designed with shuttles in mid but the pictures look so captivating.

Thanks to anyone who replies

I'm afraid Green Gal, I'm a shuttle tatter. Though I fully agree Jon's patterns are eye catchers! I would love to peek into one of her books.

Haven't seen the book but I can usually do just about any Shuttle pattern with the Needles. Give it a try. You won't know if you can unless you do. :flowers:

Hi Greengal, Madhur, Carolivy

Carolivy, you are right in that any shuttle patterns can be done with needles.
In the book Tatting with Rings, the patterns uses plastic rings that are covered up with tatting. I am a shuttle-tatter first and a needle-tatter occasionally. And I only know the basics of needle-tatting.

When I was working on the book, naturally I used a shuttle. I don't know if anyone has come up with a tutorial on how to cover up plastic rings with needles, at least I have not come across any site showing how to do it.

When the book came out, I was asked if the designs can be tatted with needles. So I gave it some thought and came up with a tutorial which you can see here (http://tatsaway.blogspot.com/2009/09/wrap-stitch-round-plastic-ring-with.html#comments).

Greengal, I hope this answers your queries.

I am waiting for Jon's book to come back into print in the new year, in the meantime can someone please tell me what sort of rings to get? I would like to build up a stock ready to start once I get the book. TIA>

The rings are called cabone rings (for probably historical reasons!). Boye, Dritz and Wrights all manufacture them. They are usually available at craft stores like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, etc in the US. The sizes most available are 1/2 inch to 2 inches.

The website Crafts For Less has some pretty good prices on them if you don't have a local hobby/crafts store.

Patty!
Imagine my surprise when I received my current issue of "Tatting Times" from Karey Solomon. At the very back are 2 "cabone" rings taped inside as a 'goodie' for 2009 subscribers. She wrote a little history regarding cabone.

"Sometimes called "cabone" rings, because before the widespread use of plastic, they were made of cow bones ("cabone" sounds slightly classier)."

I thought this was interesting.

Another question, is there a preferred size of ring? I would like to buy the rings ready for when I get the book?
