Does anyone have information on International Tatters' Day?
1. Date?
2. How it came about?
3. What people do to celebrate this day?
Judith.

Hi there Judith! International Tatting Day (BTW, not "Tatter's Day") is always on April 1st. I found out on this link (http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/tatting.htm). I Googled "Tatting Day" one time by chance (half joking to myself) and found it! I was so surprised!
People tat and eat CHOCOLATE on that day! I do not know how it came about. The site says that it came about "4 years" ago, but I found that site last year and I don't know when that article was put up.

I think it is connected to Here-Be-Tatters as they have a special shuttle for that day; contact Sue Hanson ~ she may have begun it! I think she is a member here; at least she was on the old list. Bev

How can April fool's day coincide with the tatting day? In my opinion, the tatting community ought to unanimously re fix another date for this purpose so far as this brilliant art form is concerned.

Agree Madhur, it sort of makes fun of tatting. Do you know my husband originally wanted to get married on April Fool's day - his sick sense of humour (of course we didn't, but a week later).

Yes, I know what you mean Madhur and ArtyLady! In fact, one time when I said "Happy Tatting Day" to some friends who were visiting on April Fool's Day and had asked about the tatting in my home...they said unanimously "APRIL FOOLS!!!" We all had a good laugh, but I had to show them the online proof that it really is International Tatting day. I think it should be changed, too!

Maybe the date wasn't totally thought through, but I love the way of celebrating :) Only problem is how to keep your tatting getting dirty with chocolate (maybe this could be avoided if you tat with brown thread...

Or...eat your chocolate in an alternative way: "Look MUM! NO HANDS!"

I would suggest a day that's moving - to encourage people to get together. Something like the first Saturday of x month. And preferably when there's fewer other events and holidays on to clash with.

or we could just celebrate national chocolate eating day

madhur

We are talking about internatiaonal tatting day and not chocolate day. I totally endorse Kerti's point of view!

I concur with kersti's idea as well...we could always start another intatters day of tatting or some such business.

The second Saturday in July looks very promising for an annual event.

Sifting the sands of memory, I believe that I first encountered a note about celebrating "International Tatting Day" on April 1 in an issue of "KNOTS" by Mary McCarthy. I believe that it was also popularized by Karey Solomon in "Tatting Times." I am sure that the Online Tatting Class was celebrating the date at least by 1999.

Put the M&M's in a class or cup and "drink" them aka pour them into your mouth. It is the safest way to do it. :w00t:

I would have to dig out the shuttle that my DH made for me. It was the first shuttle he ever made and he did it on International Tatting Day aka April 1st. I need to check the date on that to see if it was the first International Tatting Day or just my first one, 1999 is ringing a bell to me too.

Seem that April 1st have been the International tattingday for 10 years at least so moving it could cause confusion.

But then, for me every day is a tatting day - or at least a potential tatting day

And organized tatting activities on other days than April 1.st will just make more fun:party:

Wow!! Thanks for all the feed-back, folks.
While I am as amused as others about the date, it definitely won't be forgotten. To the French, this sounds fishy!

Now that a date has been established, I agree that any change would create confusion for those who already celebrate it then. So let's join in! Chocolate is definitely the way to go, but tatting will always come first; maybe a 'tatted challenge' for next 1 April, Kersti?

Since I've given it more thought I agree that a change in the date would cause confusion! The more I think about it I really don't mind that it's on April 1st and it's really kind of a fun way to remember it.

Yes to a new date! When was chocolate invented????

The following is just my personal opinion, and is not meant to offend the founders of International Tatting Day.

The first of April for International Tatting Day sounds "foolish" to me, just as it sounds "fishy" to the French (Thanks, Judith! That was a good "ha-ha"!).

If the first day of the new year could be changed from the first of April to the first day in January, then why not change Tatting Day to the first day of Spring, also formerly known as the first day of the new year (except nowadays it is still Persian New Year).

The benefit of using the first day of Spring is that its meaning is of a re-birth, a continuation of the cycle, which is not a bad thing for Tatting.

This date change would result also in the loss of the connotation of "foolish" or "fishy", which IMHO would be an advantage when explaining our Art to the non-cognoscenti.

Just my opinion. What do you say?

After all the comments, I've no doubt we'll all remember 1 April for one reason or another.
As it is an 'international' day, there would be little point associating it with spring. Spring is 6 months apart, depending on which hemisphere you live in. Also, some countries calculate the beginning of spring differently
- the equinox in March/September or the first day of that month.
Independence Day is not celebrated in some countries, or on different cultural dates.
As the occasion has been around for over 10 years already, I'm quite happy to eat my chocolate on 1 April.
Judith.

Well, you know we all celebrate tatting every time we make something. However I have to share that I know more than one couple who have gotten married on that day & the marriages have lasted for years & years! To me I celebrate tatting every time I tatt. Reguardles if it's just practicing. But you know if you don't like April 1st then maybe all tatters, including those who picked that day should have a say on it. After all every day is a blessing & life should be celebrated the best to each person's ablity. For we are spose to enjoy the simple things in life & stop to smell the flowers. Count our daily blessings & find something to laugh about each day. Not always easy to do, but even in the darkest hours we can find something even small & stupid to giggle about a little. I'm not trying to upset anyone. But unless everyone does it on the same day, there's going to be even more confussion on when to celebrate the day. So it seems like there's alot of people to talk to about changing the day or how else is this going to work? Tatting & chocolate,,,,both good things to enjoy everyday as is friendship & family, good times & wonderful memories. Just a thought that popped in my mind & I don't want to upset anyone.

I know, what you mean, Little Bell, I agree that ALL tatters should have a say in it. I don't think that we have the "authority" to change that date here on this thread at InTatters. I realize that it was probably started in jest by a small group of tatters, but it has grown in popularity since that year it was started and it is established as being on April 1st each year.

Apirl isn't a bad month really. Nor is the 1st. TattingChic, I wasn't trying to upset anyone. But let everyone know that we celebrate tatting everyday. Just like we are spose to celebrate each & every day of our lives. Love, laugh & even tatting helps some of us get through the bad times in life. Oh, the friends like you that I have met on here, are true blessings & are priceless to me. I can't give you each a hug to say thankyou, but I can share laughs & be there for those who need someone to be there. Just listen & let them know someone cares about them as a person & as a fellow tatter. I hope every day of 2010 is an amazing blessing for each & everyone of us. They have been for me so far & I hope it keeps up. TattingChic, you are a sweet person just as you are. I can't get mad but I sure do miss all our chats we had before. I have a feeling when it comes back we'll all have alot to talk about. You know I look forward to that! Smile I love you all as good friends should.

I'm sorry...but who's upset??? I'm confused here. I really didn't see anyone being upset.

You know, I don't know who you are, Little Bell, so when you make statements like " I can't get mad. I sure do miss all our chats we had before" It is very disconcerting to me. You can't get mad at me about what? What are you talking about. Also, what chats that we had before. I don't know who you are! So, if this is a case where you think you know who I am and I have no idea who you are then that is really creepy to me. I am going to have to ask you to stop PM'ing me and telling me about someone that has snubbed you when you don't tell me the person's name, you don't tell me who you are. Please don't email me again either. Thank you, Best of luck! No harm meant, but I am going to have to ask you to not contact me again. Please don't make another profile name and try to contact me that way either, thank you. God bless you.

TattingChic,
I sure wasn't trying to upset you or anyone else for I look up to all of you & am shooting to get better at tatting. I know that I don't know everything about tatting & have alot to learn. So to me everyday is a celebration of life & doing what we enjoy. Tatting, enjoying our friendships & enjoying chocolate together. Sharing, learning & having fun. IF I have upset you TattingChic, then I am deeply sorry for what ever I have done that upset you. I'm not here to upset anyone here.

Very cute, CindyK! Love your play on words... "Tatting Fool"! How cute! Yes, it is a perfect day to learn a "tricky" new element ...AND eat chocolate! LOL! You know, I really don't "celebrate" April Fool's Day anyway, I'm not much into playing jokes on people...did when I was much younger, but not anymore that I don't like jokes at people's expense! I don't mind using this day to celebrate something else that has more meaning to me anyway!

I love the play on words and have no problem being acknowledged as a tatting fool LOL!! I think it is great to have a special day to recognize the art of tatting and all the great tatters.
