How about a challenge to tat a pattern from a book on your shelf that you have yet to tat something out of?

Hi,
I have no books yet, but have some tatting magazines, like Burda, is it ok?

Why not? There must be a yet-unused book on the shelf somewhere.

How about a challenge to tat a pattern from a book on your shelf that you have yet to tat something out of?

Or, for those who may not have a book ~ a pattern from their favorite blogger who provides patterns; or magazine (Burda, Workbasket). That way, no one HAS to have a book.

I'm a book collector (art, devotional~ CS Lewis ~ poetry ~ tatting) and I fall into that category of people who are surrounded by books by choice and who read voraciously.

This is a really good idea because many of the books have small motif that could be worked up quickly.

I have teh animal book and i want to do the cow i bought the thread but need to start it. Maybe this will give me a reason to do it. But i have done a few of the oter animals from that book about a year ago for a baby blanket. Will that count still?

PattyD
03-11-2009, 06:29 PM
Of course it counts! The object is to do something you haven't done before and have perhaps overlooked or put off.

I think that's a great idea. There are many free patterns available on the internet and even in this forum so we should all be able to find something we haven't tackled yet. I've purchased books and looked for patterns on tatting I've never tried like Celtic patterns and jewelry patterns. This would be a good opportunity to try something different to see if we like it or not. Can someone create a folder where we can post our finished items to share with everyone?

Ok, I'm in! Easy for me, as I have made so few things yet, LOL!
And don't have any books, but I'll find something around the net... Split rings seems to be the next step for me, so maybe a bookmark that uses that..

I'm working on something out of the "tatted artistry of Tekio Fujita". It's one of the simpler pieces lol....I'm not ready for three shuttles yet.

All finished! I did a pattern from Christmas Angels and Other tatting Patterns by Monica Hahn. A very dear friend from Texas sent me this book a while ago and I just have not had a chance to do any of them. This was a great incentive to do some of these lovely patterns. I did the Oriental Christmas tree pattern and will be putting it in a Christmas card for someone. It is being blocked as I type and I will post a picture soon. this was a fun challenge!

Mine's done! I did a bookmark that I finished last night. I just have to get a scan of it posted -- maybe tonight!

YES! I just got the piece scanned and added to my album, and the pictures in the November Challenge Group. I did the Cockerel Bookmark from Animal Bookmarks: A Tatted Zoo by Dianna Stevens. It was fun and fairly simple to do -- I like split rings.

Got to get my UFO finally scanned. I started on the "Lavender and Lace"-doily from Rita Weiss Book (the one Tarie mentioned) and liked it so much, that I decided to make it a big one. I'm finished with only five of the squares and won't get it finished in November. Hope that it counts anyway

Here's my photo: http://www.intatters.com/picture.php?albumid=173&pictureid=2813

It's a snowflake from the allcrafts.net pages. I never purchased any books with snowflakes because I didn't think I would make them but 'tis the season so I thought I would try it. I really enjoyed doing a snowflake and will be looking for more patterns.

The funny thing about this motif is that it is needletatted and I had to switch to a shorter crewel needle to finish it because I was running out of thread. When it was done, there was literally only one inch of thread from the needle left. I should have just added more thread earlier but I kept thinking it just couldn't take that much thread. I was surprised at how much thread was used for each ring and chain!

Still, it was a lot of fun and I learned how to needletat with a very short needle.

P.S. Hiding the ends was super easy!!

I finally managed to put the two pictures up in my albums. Sorry for the poor quality, my scanner does have its difficulties with the bright colours I love to use.

I finished my tatting on sunday night, but I didn't get the pictures up before. The cross bookmark is what got me tatting in the first place: my aunt gave a book as a confirmation present for my sister and I fell in love with it and wanted to learn. I didn't have enough patience back then, though. I did get one for my confirmation from the same aunt. And now I can do them on my own :)

This was last year's challenge - but maybe someone can create a new group and we take it again? Or we can just add to last year's group -
go to the top of the page, where it says "groups", look for "November 2009 challenge", select "Join this group" and then "add pictures to this group" - and post a picture of you challenge item!

I think I will join too, I have an edging from the Coats booklet I received at a giveaway...

I just bought an Ebay book this weekend. It is supposed to have snowflakes in it....perfect timing for a challenge. Plus, it'll make me get my album going.
