This is a secret santa style exchange - you won't know who your partners are until you receive your goodies :)
Suggestions for what to send (try to keep this relatively Christmas themed!)
- tree decoration (tatted)
- Christmas card
- Something for their stash (thread, beads)
- Shuttle
- Amazon/Handy Hands vouchers
- Your own patterns
Please DO NOT send food. Some countries have very strict quarantine laws, and for others the time in transit will likely spoil the effect (esp so with chocolate)

Could you give some guide lines about what and how much to send? I am new here so I have never done this on this board. Do you send something from each catagory or fill a certain size box or how does that work? Thanks for the info.

I would like to give this a try to. Things have slowed down for me, so I think I can handle it. Never did it before, but so far I like everyone I have met though my tatting groups and I would like to share, something!

Some forums declare a maximum amount one can spend. The sorts of things I've put in my boxes in the past was beads, charms, balls of thread,hand-dyed thread samples; beading needle, tatting book(s); if I knew a tatter also loved to embroider, I put in embroidery thread and embroidery magazine or copies of Piecework if they knitted. Hard candy (I've never had a problem sending candy any place), a souvenir from the Southwest (esp. for international person), bead containers, needle threader, tapestry needle, Tatting bag or tin, bangles, and of course some small item that I have tatted. I've received many different sorts of things. Charms, buttons, Keychain with a tatted bauble (very pretty), Tatted scissor holder, tatted hankie, miscellaneous tatted pieces, sun-catchers, bangles for sun catchers, Tatting book by Karey Solomon, hard candy, balls of thread I hadn't used before in sizes I had not used, et cetera.
One does not have to send ALL of those items, just what one can afford to share from their stash. It isn't the amount, it's the thought! I happened to have a large stash! LOL Probably because I buy everything on line and always get too much! The main thing is to be prompt and follow through!
One thing I do, if they have a blog, I go there and read all the blog entries and I can see what they "wish" they had ~ like one mentioned she'd love to have some Tut thread and was saving up ~ a good idea right in front of me!
I can also look at his/her tatting and figure out which colors they prefer. It's a bit of detective work that makes it more fun.
If it is a person who doesn't keep Christmas or has a different culture; I avoid Christian symbols of Christmas out of respect for their belief system.
just a few of my personal choices....BEV

I second Bev. The idea is to do whatever is on your heart. If we all see it as more about giving than receiving, I'm sure the love will come through and every gift will be perfect. Sure some gifts might be larger than others.... It's the thought that counts. I think it's a great because no one knows how to shop for a tatter better than us right? I've already started planning my gifts....

 ooooh Me too! just tatting away, I buy things throughout the year when I get to Hobby Lobby, just for exchanges. I have a couple new books to choose patterns from... hehehe isn't this fun? B
How cool! I am looking forward to this! Is there a guide to how much we should spend? I'd hate to think I was being mean, but don't want to embarrass my swap partner either-not that that's likely, as the pennies aren't clanking in my pockets!

I think a small padded envelope would be an ideal amount - of course it's perfectly possible to spend a fortune but I think a guideline of $10 would be appropriate.

Today I started assembling things from my "stash" to send a long with a tatted piece or two. As I put it all in the envelope I thought of a few questions.
This is a secret santa exchange, does that mean that I'm not supposed to reveal who I am at all? I was planning to include a note and I was planning to sign it. Is that ok? I'm assuming that when we are assigned our person that we will be given their address. Is this correct? Are we going to be assigned to the person who is assigned to us or is it random? Are there any other important details we should be sure to keep in mind?

Thank you so much for organizing this!

Who ever received me as an exchange partner. Please, please put the item in a very, very padded envelope or one of those small mailing boxes from PO. All mail coming and going from Silver requires a lot of protection. I think they play soccer with the packages! The last padded envelope had one item broken and it was really sad. The packet Madhur sent me (I'm going to take a pic of this one!); I can't believe it made it at all or that the tatted pieces didn't fall out! After all your work, you don't want to loose it from rough treatment from our Postal Service in New Mexico.
Thanks...AND be sure when I mail mine out ~ it will be very well protected and taped! LOL Bev

Finally - after a false start when I left the address at home (must be an Aussie thing Green Gal) my package got underway...until......I got home and realised that I left something out of the darn thing. Grrrrr -
ohhh lovely postie - let me slip it into the pack. SO if you get something from Australia with a mangled corner to the envelope.........LOL.
Australia Post ruin the surprise anyway cos you cannot send anything anonymously - have to sign a dangerous goods declaration and put a return address on it!!

I received my Secret Santa gift today! How will I ever wait until Christmas. I have no idea who sh/e is! It is packed with tatting, I can tell from 'squishing' it and it arrived all in one piece. Miracle of miracles! LOL
It snowed here and we could not get the van out on to the county road; so my packet won't leave Silver until December 2d. But it will arrive on time I am sure. DH is some concerned about it's 'fatness' (our PO is so persnickety) but it will go out in spite of his grumbling. It is difficult when one has to depend on someone else to do these little tasks for one. I hope my recipient is pleased by my choices; I'm better being able to use a box. LOL Bev
Read my entry to DH and he took PITY on me; when the sun came out he went down to the PO TODAY (the first) and so it won't be but one day late; however, I've mailed to your country before, so I'm sure it will arrive before Christmas.
Oh yes, lets vote! I don't want to wait until Christmas unless I HAVE TO.....LOL
My recipient may open his/hers whenever it arrives! LOL DH said I'd not last until Christmas at any rate! He is probably correct. Bev

 My thoughts about opening the X-Mas exchange gift is that seeing as how we are busy with family/children/friends on X-Mas and it falls on a Friday, how about saying that we can open it on or after the 21st...which would be :happydancetwirl:(happy day) Monday! That way we will have time to respond about our secret Santa gift before the holiday starts! Just a totally INNOCENT suggestion mind you...!

I received the package from you today. The doily you sent is so beautiful - you are a very talented stitcher and designer. I am so glad to have received it. The tatting is so much lacier in a smaller thread size. Your work is beautiful, and it will be treasured for years to come. Thank you for the threads; I can't wait to try the smaller thread size. I've been thinking of getting a clover pendant; it was a nice surprise.
Merry Christmas, and best wishes to you and yours in the coming year. Happy Tatting!

I have had bad and a good day. Looks like the evil elves are alive and well somewhere between the USA and Broadford.
This morning I eagerly went to the mailbox cos I could see parcels!!!! (LOVE parcels) 2 for Jamie and there were 2 for me.
The first I grabbed was an envelope from Ladyshuttlemaker --ooh my flat pen had arrived....but alas - some unknown arse had slit the envelope at the bottom of one side and extracted the pen:furious: so all I have to show for it is a receipt from Sherry, her business card and an empty plastic bag - I was devastated. The really sad thing is that they will probably just bin it when they realise it is a hook not a pen.
Then I found my secret santa prezzie and with renewed faith in humankind I found it was from no other than PAPAGENA!!!!!!!!! (hmm haven't we had some mail lately?????)
Two lovely balls of thread - some Altin Basak variegated and a crisp white to go with it - and a gorgeous card with a tatted tree on the front which is sitting proudly on my fireplace as my first card of the season!! I will take photos this evening.
Thank you Sonja it is a lovely gift that I will be getting around to use very soon.
At lesat the day was not totally ruined!!
So Green Gal.......OPEN IT.......LOL Then I won't feel so bad about not waiting !!
( I totally forgot about waiting..like a little kid I saw Sonja's name and ripped it open then and there!!!!!)

Confession. We went out of state for Thanksgiving. I was supposed to take my package with me to mail it from my sis's. It didn't get packed. I missed the deadline, & I'm really sorry!!!! It went out on the 2nd. I can't even blame anyone but me, 'cause I put it where I was sure it wouldn't get left behind. It still got left.
It has 3 weeks to make it across the ocean, so I hope it still gets there on time. I tried to be anonymous, but I had to sign a customs form, & I put my return addy on it just in case. I hated the thought of it possibly ending up in limbo. I forgot all about sending a card  - but I did find a Christmas bag to put in it!
So, I'm sitting here, on a bed of nails waiting for my recipient to let me know if it makes it before Christmas!

One of my two parcels arrived on Saturday, just in time for Santa to put it in my boots! Big thanks to my secret santa nancylynn!
The necklace and earrings are straight phantastic! There also were beads in two unusual colours, wonderful thread (the embroidery floss will not be tatted, though, I'll do Richelieu or cross stitch with it!) and my favourite teaching book! Even though I recommend it to all my students, can you imagine I never managed to acquire one of those for myself? So, thank you very much!

Yipppeeeeeeeeeeee!! My Secret Santa package arrived from Winnipeg Canada!!! I posted pics. Thank you sooooooooo much Monica! I love it all!
There is a most beautiful red bookmark with beads tatted in very fine thread! I LOVE it! There was a package of multicolored seed beads, a ball of green tatting thread, an Eero type shuttle in blue with 2 bobbins, an eentsy little tatted angel whose face is a button & a package of charms with a Santa, bells on a bow & a hope charm. The only way I could get a good pic of my little angel was to hang her on the tree. She looks lovely there! She was attached to a card that says, "Angels occupy the loveliest corners of our thoughts."
Thank you again, Monica! It made my day a happy one. It's been blizzarding all day, & my drive home was scarey. I was wet & cold from cleaning snow off the jeep, so you can imagine how happy I was to find such a lovely surprise in my mailbox.

And I am worried that sent mine november 30th! Maybe it is the US customs that holds the envelopes for a while to see that they do not explode? Sweden and Switzerland could be considered dangerous for all I know. I thought that me not having the zipcode might delay more, but as you also have even more delay this might not be the case. Another possibility is that our recievers has some trouble getting online.
We will have to wait and see.

I let my exchange partner know that I have sent it on Nov.19 so that she knows it is on its way. I know this kinda ruins the surprise but I also did not want her wondering if her secret Santa had forgotten her. Mine has to go to Portugal but I still feel it should have reached her by now. I am hoping to hear that she has gotten it this week or I will really be biting my nails. I do think having to go through customs makes it more of a delay but, three weeks?? I do hope she gets it soon.

I have sent packages from the US to Australia and had them take as long as 5 or 6 weeks to get there. One package I sent to Wales took 4 weeks to arrive.

Both my packages reached their destinations safely, each to opposite sides of the globe.
I have received one sent to me. The other package must be travelling from far away.
Anticipation, anticipation...is making me wait (sic), is keeping me waiting. :)

Today I posted my enveloppe with the christmasexchange. It must be there in a week. I hope she likes it!
I received my lovely tatted gifts from Sonja ~ Thank you so much.
And the mail was quite prompt. Mine going out will probably take longer even though it is about the same distance away as Holland (it's not Holland ~ going to S'pore). Hint hint I'll post a photo of my Secret Santa gifts soon

I got in late, but glad that I did. I have had fun with it already and glad my receiver liked what I sent. I have been looking at everything sent by others just to give me ideas if they do this next year again. It was sure fun!
I wish I had joined this site earlier. I would have love participating in this. It looks like everyone has really enjoyed both sending and receiving gifts. Just wonderful.

I have enjoyed reading and looking. I enjoyed helping Vivianne with her gifts. I hope to participate next year as well. Only one suggestion to all for future exchanges. Every 'secret Santa' exchange I have participated in, has been secret only until gift arrives. When dealing with post offices and possible messups there it is always best to be sure there is complete return address information. Viv tracked her stateside gift. If there is a loss or messup, with all the information, the package could be tracked and possibly recovered. Just a suggestion.

Mine went out late, but should arrive soon, I haven't received mine yet, but there's still plenty of time-you guys are so impatient:biggrin:!

Post to Australia can be ridiculously slow. GinnyW sent me a birthday present in September one year and it arrived in March the following year......SURPRISE!!!!!
I am waiting on two things I have ordered from the States - I am starting to think that neither will arrive. Christmas post....Grrrrrr

Whoopee! Today I received a Secret Santa gift from Gloria (Australis) in Chile. There were all kinds of goodies. Thank you Gloria! I am fascinated with the little group of flowers worked in horsehair. They are so beautifully worked. The necklace is just my style. Pictures maybe tomorrow.

So I don't feel so bad now. Thanks for waitig with me. Oh, we do have goodies to enjoy so we don't go hungery too. Yep it's a nice quiet party while waiting.

I´m enjoying the party! It´s fun getting to know all of you while waiting. Up here in the north of Sweden we have very little snow. But today it turned cold, so atleast the snow will stay, if we get some. :D Very cosy to sit inside and drink Glögg/mulled wine (google translation, so I hope it is correct) Big tradition here at Christmas time. Gingerbread cookies, raisins and almonds should be served with it.

Lena,
You make me want to celebrate right now. We buy a bottle of glogg mix to make mulled wine and a big tin of pepparkakor made in Nyaker at a store called World Market here. Their site is: www.worldmarket.com.
Not as good as actually being in Sweden for Christmas, but we can pretend!

I've apparently received my package at the better half's place and he's already explored the loot!
but he's keeping it a secret and repacked everything in the envelope so i still get the surprise - I'm keeping it till Christmas so I have one more present to open because I don't usually get many! =)
