You've got to see this to really understand. Any slack in the tension on my thread and it drops off of my short fingers! But with the little cut, it stays in place. Realize that the last joint of my ring and middle finger are almost an inch short. Chop an inch off your two fingers and imagine what your thread would be able to do. This is fantastic!! Not so many dropped threads!! I am thrilled!!

And it's all to the credit of elishama3 and her blog about making a finger guard. It all happened as I was procrastinating_____not really tatting on something different. But thinking about tatting.
