I heard of this technique last year but I never got it. I repeatedly watched video after video and looked at diagrams of how it should be and to no avail, I just couldn't get it. Now this past week I was watching Karen Cabrera's cabone how to video and suddenly remembered that I read somewhere if one understand how to tat with cabone, one would know how to do split chains. So I paid extra attention to how she does it and tried it on my own and I did it!

I finished a piece of project where the thread ran out at the end and only have enough to do split chains. yay! one less UFOs.....

Thank you to Karen Cabrera's video, it is so clear and easy to follow.

Since I have been tatting at work, a few friends/coworkers was interested to learn tatting. I want to hit the iron while the iron is hot so to speak, I downloaded some instruction online and provided them size 10 threads I first bought couple years ago at my own beginning.

My first pupil was able to flip with the help of using hemp twine and has since completed a butterfly and a flower pattern. Now she just have to move toward smaller threads. No pushing from me, she will make the change I say when she is ready.

My second pupil told me yesterday that she has finally figure out the flip and was able to do complete a little project of a ring with 4ds p 4ds p 4ds p 4ds p 4ds. Shes was excited and when she saw our friend with the butterfly she announced that she also want to tat a butterfly.

Since she only knows rings, I found a really simple butterfly pattern online today that uses only rings.

This is so great to be able to convert friends to tatting buddies......

Since I have never read Work Basket Magazines I figure they would be good to have so I bought them. I found that in each of the magazine there is one tatting pattern. So far I found one butterfly, one heart, edging and doilies.

I am pretty happy with my find and they will be stored right next to my tatting books.

I have made huge rabbits with hemp twine that adorn the office doors and made small rabbits using size 10 pastel color thread for some coworkers. It was fun to make and a great conversation topic for everyone who received a rabbit from me.

We stayed there till 12:30 after viewing all the tanks, they have several exhibit on seahorses, flamingo, and turtles. Does anyone know there are totally white and totally shocking orange flamingo not just the pink and white one we usually see? I really like the shocking orange one.

We also went to Gilroy outlets on the way back to go to this kitchen store for some hot sauces. Except, we found that the store closed due to bad economy. boohoo.
I tried to tat on the way home, except I kept on nodding off, that I had to just stop and put it away so I don't make mistake and get upset.

I made Jon's snowflake with the Celtic twist. Today I decide to starch it. except I grabbed the wrong can and sprayed fabric and foam adhesive all over it. At the time spraying it, I was thinking how come the starch is all gummed up that it is not watery and runny but gummy and sticky.

I tried to blame on my bf but he isn't taking the blame of leaving his industrial strength adhesive right next to my starch. I am currently waiting for it to dry and see what I got. Hopefully, the picots are not stuck closed. Well, my thinking is that there were plenty of tips on using glue to block so in a way this is one way for me to find out.

Who knew, this might just not be a bad thing that happened.....it is just too funny. I need to see and read the label of the can before using.

As a promise to myself, I was watching the TV yesterday while practicing cluny. It is getting better but how do one use it in a project? after my leaf are made, I got all these threads on both side. Sure I can wind up the shuttle side but what about the other side?

Good thing I was using size 10 threads that I don't like (so no big loss for me to cut it off and toss) as I got lots of size 10 to practice with. I think maybe the patterns calls to make the cluny first than rest of the tatting? but then what do you do if you have more than one cluny to make and in between all the rings and such? How do you place the cluny right next to the rings and other elements?

That is the question I am stumped on. I guess I have more theories to try out with those size 10 threads.

Yesterday was my 2nd time going to the GGL meeting. It was raining very hard visibility was low at times but the good thing that it was sporadic from place to place.

During the meeting, PattD gave us a pop quiz of taking the ring apart. All of us passed the test. Then she went on to show us how to hide ends without magic thread, SSSR, and Cluny.

SSSR- turns out when I tried myself I was not doing it wrong but I just didn't know what to do with the extra threads afterwards that I decided I failed and cut/ tossed it out.

Cluny- I also tried this by myself but I ended up with a mess of threads on my hand that took a while to take apart. When PattyD coached me thru, I was amazed at the semi leaf shape that came out. I will keep on trying it out until my cluny would come out looking like a leaf and all threads are pulled and no loop left over.

I am really happy to have found this lace group and greatful to PattyD for giving me the needed instructions.

Thanks PattyD for the tip.
The book on bookmarks will come in handy as I plan to work on some of the beautiful patterns as gifts this year. Celtic tatting looks very similar to Chinese knots to me. I think I will learn the trick first and see if I can incorporate some Chinese patterns. I can't wait.
It was a sunny afternoon spent with a group of very friend and helpful ladies. The meeting was from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm and the time sure flies, we ate and tatted and ate some more and tatted some more then it was time to leave. I am looking forward to the next meeting in November.

I will also be seeing couple friends in Sept that I have not seen for 22 years. I was thinking if I hurry, I can have some tatting done for them as gifts upon meeting. Of course, I have to decide what I want to do first as I don't want to make it too complicate then I will never get it done in time.
Than of course, there is Yon's snowflake challenge that I want to see if I can come up with something. Even though it seemed everyone may already finished with this challenge, I only discovered it yesterday. So, I am still going to try my hands at designing.
I think I have lots of tatting to do this long weekend. I hope it is fruitful for me with lots of results.

I made the 10 rings in the middle and I wanted to change color for the rest of the doily so now it is waiting till I can wind the other color I have in mind on to a bobbin/ shuttle.

For exercise, I worked on an edging from the book by Gun Blomqvist and Elwy Persson called Ingeborg. The outcome is not bad. I wondered how does one stop tatting the edging to make sure the ending would help bring out the designated design of the tatted piece. In the end I decide to try a ring and it worked, no chain was left hanging by itself to wreck the overall look of the piece. That made me happy and forgot how hot it was.
I will post my tat later.
