It is yet another Portrait necklace but this time it is in dark purple and instead of using 3mm beads on the chains of the rounds, I used gorgeous Swarovski 10mm Heliotrope heart pendents which are purple but with a blue hue that I don't think these photos do justice.

I am really please with how it turned out. I compared it to my last shuttle tatted necklace and it it a lot smaller so my tension must also be improving. I am also quite glad of this as my mum is a small lady and I was worried the bigger necklace would drown her.

I am really looking forward to giving this to her this lunch time!

Can anyone guess which of the two in needle tatted and which is shuttle tatted (bare in mind this is my first finished item with the shuttle and I have been needle tatting for around 6 months now)?
here is a close up of each...

I first picked up the tatting needle in February. When I told my Mum about it she told me she had been given two old shuttles from a lady at Church but she had never figured out how to use them.

So the past 3 weekends when i've visited I had tried to figure out how to actually use them. Then this past sunday I FINALLY managed to do more than 1 double stitch.

So never doing anything by half I bought by first shuttle. I decided to get an Aero shuttle because I found it a pain to need the use of my tatting needle to do joins.

So here is it... My Ali Baba shuttle, decorated by LaCossette (Joelle Paulson).

As you can see, I have just got the hang of the rings and chains.

So I thought I would take advantage of my new skill and save sey by making gifts for my nearest and dearest. Although it turns out that when you get into it, making nice tatted pieces isn't as cheap as you might think.

I started with my sister's birthday. She has seen the choker I designed and the slave bracelets I made from TotusMels design and she decided she would like them for her Birthday, with the intention of wearing them at her Anime convention this summer.

She chose Lizbeth Ecru for the thread then I chose Ocre coloured ribbon and "powdered Almond" swarovski pearls for the detailing.

The results of my efforts are shown below:

Now I like the slave bracelets but I felt like I was cheating using TotusMel's design (even though she gave her permission to use it for personal use) so I am working on a slave bracelet/cuff design based on my choker. The image work is done, I'm just working on the stitch count then I should be able to make her a matching set of hand jewellery in time for her convention.

It is also my Grandma's birthday on the 1st of May, and as a soon to be 88 year old lady she is very difficult to buy for as she doesn't need or want anything.. I do however know her favorite colours are blues and purples so I made this Seahorse Dragon using Lizbeth Caribean. I think the colours work great with the sea creature theme.

So thats part of what I have been up to recently. I next post will show the other things I have been doing this spring...

So I discovered tatting several months ago when I stumbled upon TotusMel's Instructables pattern for her lovely mask.. I never did anything about it and then randomly in the new year I remembered the mask and had a look at it again and thought I would like to learn how to do it.

Since it was my birthday coming up and I also had a trip to london which would entail a LOT of sitting about (my other half was getting a large tattoo by his favorite artist) i thought I would buy a book, some needles and thread and have a bash.

My package arrived the day before we left for london and I was really pleased I didn't have to wait till we got back...

Well that was 1 month ago exactly and since then I have been tatting almost every day. So I guess I am completely hooked.

At the moment I am suffering major withdrawals as I left my size 5 needle at my mum's house on Sunday and the piece i'm working on needs that needle. I also have a fabulous selections of size 10 Lizbeth thread which arrived yesterday and is now sitting taunting me.

As soon as I get my needle back i'll finish the piece i'm working on. Its a choker I designed myself. Nice and simple but i'm pretty proud of my progress in only a month.

i'll get picture posted as soon as its finished. :w00t:
