DonnaK

A Hankie by Hand

Rate this Entry
I finished an item, my second. Pattern from Learning How to Tat (author I can't remember), #80 thread White Coats and Clark.
What I learned:
How to make a corner, thanks to a mirror.
How to attach using crochet, thanks to Jolette's Flickr page.

What I will do differently, next time:
Use "color".
Use Lizbeth thread coming in an order.
Give it as a gift.

That's very pretty, DonnaK. Can you find out the exact name and author of your edging? I would love to have the pattern. It is always customary to post that information, so as to both give credit to the designer and help people who would like to buy the pattern.

    Hi Batty,
    Thank you for the comment.
Here is a correction (I was away from my book when I posted)
The book is The Complete Book of Tatting by Rebecca Jones, page 42. And the thread is DMC.

I received my order with Mary Konior's Visual Patterns, colored thread and more hankies. I'm so jazzed!

I found the pattern in that book. Have you sewn the tatting on afterwards, or just attach as you go? Also how did you get the corners. I have the pattern, but I'm not sure how I'd do the corners.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/2872525...th/5422313134/ here are wonderful instructions for a crochet attachment. For the 9 1/2" hankie with #80 thread there were 16 repeats each side. For the corner I altered the top ring to 2-2-2-2-3-3-3 which gives the extra picot for the attachment of the extra ring to make the corner. I also did an extra 5-5 ring at the tip, but it didn't lay very well, so you could skip that. I'm still a novice at tatting and there may be easier ways, but hopefully this helps.

Thank you, DonnaK. I would like to try this. I'm not sure what I have for #80 thread.

I know you are looking forward to using your colour threads, but the white hankie with white tatting is absolutely classic and will never date! Whoever receives it will treasure it!

It looks lovely DonnaK, and I like how you are able to clearly reflect on the things you learned here. I have tried to do corners with a mirror before, and I found it tricky. I think I would test tat it again before doing it for another hanky. I never learned crochet, so usually test tat the edging I am doing and adjust the pattern to show which picot would join to the hanky edge and attach it as I tat. This hanky is lovely, and they do make great gifts. Thanks for sharing!
