Split ring.........I'm about ready to pull my hair out!

Rate this Entry
I've got books showing and have tried and tried, but the ring always locks up, right where I go over to do the other half. I've tried keeping it in the same direction, then I tried turning it and it is always the same sport that locks up. When I start doing the opposite/other side, I see where there is one thread that crosses over another...it just isn't working....! Any hints...! Please! and more

Do you mean two shuttle split ring, or singlle shuttle split ring?

If it is two shuttle, you do know you must NOT flip the stitches on the second half, don't you? The core is the same for all the ring, if you have different colour in the shuttles, each side of the ring will be one colour.

Hope that helps. If it doesn't, maybe a picture could help us help you :)

Sorry.....yes, I am using two shuttles. Huh...! You have to flip them some don't you, or else they will be facing the wrong way....right? After I couldn't get to work on my project, I then just tied two different colors of thread together and tried it that way, but the same thing happens...always. It locks up and usually where I start the second half in the center......thanks!

I'm just learning these new techniques, also, and sometimes find that WATCHING someone do it and explain it helps more than the books do! Here is an excellent video by Linda Davies that I hope you can watch and see if it helps. Yes, as soyloquesoy mentioned, that second half is NOT flipped! I haven't done very many of these and I'm glad to refresh my memory by watching the video because I would have forgotten that! I hope this helps ;-)

just try it once..keeping the thread taunt on the left hand and NOT flipping any of the threads on the second half..and also reverse the order of the DS formation ..do the over first and the under second...do not worry about the direction of the knots...just do it...and see what happens..

And after you conquer this, you will love SR! They drove me nuts for a long while and then it clicked and now...easy peasy.
Shuttle #2 is NOT flipped and is worked Over/Under It is reverse tatting....you can test the sliding by pulling on Shuttle #1 thread a little bit to see if it slides. As long as it slides, the ring will close. I test my rings all the time...easier to do that than get at the end and have to pick it all out! aghhhhh. Hang in there, you’ll get it!

Good luck with the split ring!
I tried it long time ago and it did not work for me either. I saved and printed lots of different tutorials by different people and different ways of explaining but I did not get the CLICK.
And then... SOMEDAY... it made click and I got it!!! And now I love doing split rings :-)

Be patient! Don't try to push yourself! Once you will get it!

I will now watch you video to kcabrera....yours are pretty nice to watch actually. I haven't had to much time since I was first doing this, because I have been busy tatting up these Easter eggs. But, I still need to accomplish this task, so I will get to it soon...Thanks Karen!
