Moving Closer = Harder?

Rate this Entry
So I've handed in my notice at work in Dublin, I've been doing interviews in Edinburgh and I'm all set to make the move.

Except for one important factor - I can't find a moving company! So far I've contacted 8 different ones, only three have responded with quotes and then after that they've all just dropped the ball, no response when I've gone back to accept or decline a quote. The quotes vary wildly too - two of them over €2000! So as it currently stands, with less than 3 weeks to go, I have no way to get my stuff moved over. It seems that because I have a half load, this is the issue.

I've looked into alternatives, would cost more to pay the insurance to take a van on the ferry, I don't know anyone with a van that I can borrow - with or without driver. Using the postal service will cost me thousands. Needless to say, I'm a little stressed!

So the act of actually packing is not currently going so well, I'm also accepting almost every social invitation I can - in many cases this could well be the last time I see some people. Thankfully my social invitations include knitting/crochet/tatting nights, without this I think I would go completely crazy!

Moving is stressful even under the best circumstances.....Sorry for your stress.
I moved only 90-100 miles, 10 years ago and could not find a moving company that would insure my extensive antique glass collection so we rented a storage building (they are everywhere in US) and every time we went to check on the house (we were building) we took a car load of boxes that I had packed glass in and stored them until we moved.....then the moving company moved the furniture.

I used to go ballistic over moving. Stress to the max. Have been here 25 years and don't even want to think of it again. We used to move every 2 - 3 years and twice we moved ourselves, it was awful. You have my deepest sympathy.

I once moved across town a carful at a time. Packed up the car in the evening, next morning went to work. After work I dumped off the boxes at the new place and drove back to the old one. Kept doing that until I was down to bare bones, and switched the order -- work, old place, new place. Took me a month. Good thing I didn't have much furniture. Good luck. Sometimes with half a load you can get them at the last minute.... er... very scary idea though.

Yes! I had to move a piano from one city to the next. It was a nightmare! Finally had my friends do it for me. But you don't have that option over the water! Have you considered getting an Edinburgh firm to make the move for you? Sometimes the unusual option works better than the direct method.

I've started the Flower Bookmark. Sadly, I neglected to write down who's blog it came from. I'll never forget that again, I promise. I am having trouble understanding how to round the end. Can someone tell me who's bookmark this is. I will add the picture.
