I apologise in advance if this question makes very little sense.

I am a shuttle tatter (I rather like saying that!) but I have noticed over the last couple of pieces that my tension is a bit... shall we say, all over the place?!

I know that generally I need to be tatting a little tighter but I am struggling to find a comfortable way to hold the non-shuttle thread or the ring around my left hand that is consistent. So I was wondering if people in the group would be able to either describe how they hold the thread or point me in the direction of pictures or video that shows that part of the process so I can compare differences to how I hold my thread. (most videos seem to concentrate on where the knot is happening rather than the whole hand.)

Thank you for any help in advance.

I can see colors, but I have no idea which ones go together better. I kept hoping that I would learn in time... But the truth is that I often like combinations that most others don't. :ermm:

So, here are my 2 motifs. The green is Lisbeth 138, Leafy Greens. The orange is from South America and came as a gift with no label. The Medium Pink is Lisbeth 621. Do you have a preference? Or, would you suggest another color?
Motif is from Priscilla No. 2, Figure 47 on Page 21.
Thank you all!

Last time I did this, I purchased 2 Pop-A-Bobbin shuttles and found I never used them, so I offered them for sale and thankfully they quickly found a very happy home in Tat-land. Much as I wanted to use them I them, I could not handle their bulk.

Now, I have gone and bought 2 GR-8 shuttles, one in a lovely lilac, the other white with green, and I LOVE them, but they are too deep for my small hands and I am very clumsy tatting with them. I have to stick to my LaCossette Aeros exclusively, I’m afraid. Live and learn...
I have tried all week since I got them to make it work, but I am finally ceding defeat. I would be so relieved if someone wanted to purchase them (I will pay for any shipping costs) because I do not accumulate shuttles that I do not always use, as I am not a collector.

Jane Eborall gave me this site to learn the split chain. It is the best. I've watched it several times and my first tries were a little messy. But you soon learn that you want to keep the ds over to the left. And you leave the first half a little loose. Then you pull the second half to tighten the first then pull the shuttle to tighten the second half.
The next row is going to be a heart. I'll show it again when I'm finished.
Here's the site for Maire Smith's instruction on the easiest way to do split chains. I am so psyched and delighted that I've finally got it.
If you still have questions, on this demo, you can PM me. If I don't know, I'll try and find out. :yahoo:
I didn't attach it to the frog. It's just that every table in the house apparently reflects light.

I copied a celtic knot design from a piece of pottery that was gifted to me ages ago, replacing some loops by rings (I find the all long chain style celtic boring and fiddly)

The weaving is *much* simpler than it looks (it all takes place after the third ring is tatted!), and I took progress pics so I can make a tutorial style post. But, I would really like to give it a nice name - does anyone know if celtic knots have names? Or can you just help me brainstorm something to make it recognizable before I publish it?

Thank you all very much!

And it will be one of my first all front side projects!!

I wanted a light blue hanky but couldn't find one that was plain. (Where besides Handy Hands do you find them?) So after too much strong coffee at 6 pm and still awake at 2 am I pulled out this white one and using the Eliz size 40 thread that the edging is made from I worked around the design on the corner.

My question is I suppose I should wash the edging and the thread before attaching it. Correct? Do I need to use pretty hot water? And will the red thread on the corner design fade onto the white hanky???

I prefer not to crochet around the hanky but instead use a white sewing thread to attach the edging.

I've got two sides completed___made one corner___ so it's decision time. Or do you think it would look better after removing the flower outline in red? Or still look for a very pale blue hanky? I'm not real happy with the present looks. Suggestions appreciated.

Tatting SIMPLE labyrinths

Hi, Everyone,

I was commenting on another thread when I was suddenly struck with the notion of tatting the famous Chartres labyrinth. Some people...

Hi, Everyone,

I was commenting on another thread when I was suddenly struck with the notion of tatting the famous Chartres labyrinth. Some people were interested in the idea, so I decided to try and make it a reality.

At first, I thought of using advanced techniques like half-ring tape or block tatting to represent the labyrinth path. But finally I decided that it would be best to use simple rings and chains. I figured that, working outwards from the centre, it would be best to have the chains (labyrinth outline) lie outside of the rings (labyrinth path). So, where the path makes a U-turn, I would do an SSSR to move the chain to the outside once more.

So, here are the results so far.
Here's a spiral labyrinth:
Attachment 16610

And here is the beginning of a three-circuit classical labyrinth:
Attachment 16611

This is what the three-circuit labyrinth should look like:
Attachment 16612

Since labyrinths don't have mirror symmetry, I decided I had to freehand it. I didn't know where the joins would be. Initially I thought that if I had picots after every two ds, it would be frequent enough. But later I decided that it would be better to make rings and chains without many picots, and just use my Clover pick to create a picot where needed.

I started with a very small ring (2-2-2-2 or 8), then a chain (2-2-2 or 6), then a larger ring (10 or 12). Chains about 8 ds to wrap around. The aim was to get to the working ring size (4-4-4-4) when coming around to the beginning of the spiral again. As you can see, you can start the 4-4-4-4 ring by the fifth or sixth ring.

Once you are going around the spiral with 4-4-4-4 rings, I find it takes 5-8 ds chains to get to the next one. Longer chains at the beginning, when the curve is tighter.

Okay, it's dinner time! I'll talk later about the U-turn and the SSSR. Let me know if the above makes sense.

Back in my drafting days I had a big fluorescent magnifier attached to the drafting table. with an articulated arm that let me move it everywhere . Life changed priorities, and I gave it away to a friend's dad when he needed something like that to read books when he got macular degeneration.. Now that I'm tatting and have older eyes, too, I'm shopping for a light magnifier combination. I've bought inexpensive models that clamp on with about a 4" lens... clamp broke on one, bulb burned out on the second and I couldn't figure out how to install and get the new bulb to work, so I bought two more.... figuring they wouldn't last.. last night the fourth one melted the housing for the bulb and it blinked off. I think I'm done with the cheap clamp ones. Anybody out there use a magnifying lamp? Any reviews? I'm almost ready to go back to the old reliable drafting style, but I don't have a good spot to clamp it to. Really would like a floor model.

A few weeks ago I taught a tatting class at a local yarn shop. It was a three hour class with three students. At the end of three hours only one student had grasped the flip. I demonstrated using a black and a white shoelace so that the flip would be easily seen. Then I spent the rest of the time doing one on one with each of the ladies. These ladies were all experienced in other forms of handwork. At the end of the class I offered them their lesson fee ($30) back but none of them would accept it saying it wasn't my fault they couldn't get it. I am so disappointed in myself. I've been tatting for almost 20 years and have successfully taught a couple of friends to tat. What did I do wrong? I did provide them with a handout with loads of Internet resources about tatting so I am hoping that they will take a look at them and perhaps find something that will help them. I can't figure out what more I could or should have done. What did I do wrong? Has anyone else had this experience?

I have been working on tatting this pattern:
http://pwp.att.net/p/s/community.dll...eid=260613&ck=
I've had a few problems and had to start over a couple times, and then I thought how much easier this pattern would be to tat if I had a diagram.(thank GOD there was a photo) So, I made one. Attachment 16604
This was my first time ever making a pattern diagram, and boy was it a pain. It took me three days. Of course that was probably because I was using software that I was extremely unfamiliar with.(Inkscape) It will probably get better the more I use the program.

But back to my diagram. What I am asking is for some people to take a look at it maybe tat it. Then let me know if I forgot anything, what I could do to improve it. I know I could do some tweaking to make it LOOK better. I'm just wondering how effective it is as a pattern. Thanks.

I saw a picture on line of some baby socks that were trimmed in tatted lace. It was a simple pattern so I thought that I could do it. So I off and purchased 12 pairs of plain white baby socks. I tatted the simple pattern and attached it as I went. The problem came when I joined the tatting after tatting the circumference of the top of the sock and well duhh - there was no way to stretch the sock open to get the foot in the sock.

I have 2 friends with babies on the way and 12 pairs of socks. Does anyone know of a pattern with instructions on how to do this. I see a lot of books out there and would be more than willing to purchase if I could find this pattern.

When attaching a thread to a bobbin, does anyone use a loop leader (like one might with fishing)? I was thinking that sort of thing might save a bit of the expensive hand dyed/metallic/etc. thread if anyone knows of how to do this. I seem to remember reading about it in one of my tatting books, but I can't remember which one. Also, this seems like it might make changing threads faster for those shuttles that have lots of parts (Silent Tatters, especially).

Hi
I have only been tatting for a few weeks and made quite a few small motifs. What I would like to know is what do all you experienced tatters do with the bits of thread left on the shuttle when you have finished? Sometimes I have a yard or two left over, is there a way to better estimate how much thread I am going to need on the shuttle?
I tend to go for quite a generous amount as I don't want to have to join in new thread if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Best wishes
I actually quit and pitched the first half of small motif I did. This pattern frustrates me cause I cannot get the rings smooth, even on the second one. Blocking helped and took out all the ruffling that would not let the motif lay flat when I finished tatting. I have looked at this pattern for awhile thinking about it (cause it is pretty). The color sample at HH says it is this pattern, but I can't see how she changed it. Love her interpretation, too.

PS: changed size on picots, thought that might help, but it did not really.

Chiacchierino's Black and Lame' Bookmark pattern is here: http://digilander.libero.it/chiacchi...lbookmark.html

The black bookmark came inside Tatting with Visual Patterns when I ordered the book. (I think it came from Handy Hands) I have put off making this pattern and have tried many others from the book, but this one intimidated me for some reason. Still not happy with tension on all the chains. Except for having to retro tat a lot cause I would forget to make the small ring where needed or forget to do a small picot over a lock join, the pattern is not difficult.

I am still fighting with tension to get the side by side chains to lay flat :ermm:

But these were on special!! Anyhoo, what crazy person can't pass up the opportunity for heavily discounted books, aye? Aye?

It all cost me less than $40 dollars! I know I know... youtube, online tutorials etc can teach me these things. But you know, sometimes I don't feel like sitting in front of the computer searching for obscure patterns and what not. I like to curl up with some books and take my time browsing them for ideas!

The little green tatting book has some patterns very interesting patterns, for beginners too.

and The Joy of Split Ring Tatting (Kuhn)

The first is an awesome book with many wonderful ideas of different tatting techniques. The square rings look interesting and she gives directions for doing wrought iron work in tatting, some celtic work and many other interesting things. A few patterns but more ideas. I did find it interesting that she calls a split ring a mousehole ring. I want to spend some more time reading through this one and practicing some of the techniques. She states she hopes readers use it to expand their tatting and designing.

I have not got to read the second one at all yet. I am not sure where her got them but put the links to Handy Hands because I knew they carried both books.

I cannot stay on the computer long this morning as I have to go see the lung specialist to make sure all is OK for our trip.

Hi hi,

I'm just learning to shuttle tat now and having finally gotten the flip, I'm having trouble adding bead to the ring.

The beads are loaded onto the shuttle thread. I can make a picot just fine, but when trying to put a bead where the next picot would be, it doesn't come out at the top of the ring (where I want it). It ends up between the ds stitches on either side, but not sticking up and out like a picot does.

Hope I'm making sense... I haven't found any videos demonstrates shuttle tatting with beads and how you do it. If anyone has links, that should help me lots. Really confused at this point..

You cannot put to many together as you have to pull them through by hand to do the joins. The core strip I used a heavy duty old woven table cloth. It took approx two months on and off. I have sewn the back and covered the back. Now its in the caravan and looks good.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to finish but I have a feeling that I set it asided one of the times I was sick and didn't find it again until last week when looking for something else. It is done now at last. Lizbeth size 80 Wildflower Garden and Spring Green. Jon sells the pattern set on her blog.

I also did 2 bookmarks to empty shuttles and I may make some more of them to give away when we are on our trip. I started like my Easy Cross and just continued up around the end and back down. Both are Lizbeth 20-one is Vineyard Harvest and the other in Jelly Bean.

I have been working on the issue with my shuttles that causes the tips to come apart when I send them somewhere that the climate is more humid. It is so dry here that when I steam the wood it bends really easy, but in a humid climate the bend does not stay. Sort of like curling your hair and walk outside when it is humid(I remember that from living in Colorado). I think I may finally have it figured out. I am making 2(Oak & Mesquite) and trying it out. As long as my health holds out while we are gone and this idea works I may be able to sell a few shuttles again by September or October. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this works.

I have also been working on making a chatelaine to take on the trip that is not thread so that it won't get dirty and might be a little sturdier while driving that far. I am putting it on a retractable clip so I can hook it on my shirt instead of having thread around my neck since I tend to sweat under my hair when I travel(side effect of my medincine). I took it with me to my chemo appointment this morning(1st time after being sick)and it worked great.

I've been solidly knitting for three weeks, but finished my project last night and decided to bring my doily with me this morning. As a new tatter, I really need to do it regularly so that I remember the skills and I spent the first several minutes of my journey looking at my work and trying to figure out what to hold where in order to do a chain.

I eventually worked it out and did a chain with three picots, a nicely-formed Josephine ring and another three picots. By then, the train was getting near to London Bridge and I didn't think I would have time to get all the way through the ring which came next in the pattern, so I put my work away and enjoyed a bit of a Regency romance on my Kindle instead.

When I've blocked the knitting project, I might put up a picture. It is lace...

I need some advice about sock yarn. My DH has recently developed a allergy to wool, so none of his socks are any good to him anymore. I found some cotton yarn that seemed nice enough, but after knitting one sock, I've decided it won't work. The cotton doesn't hold it's shape and there's no way to make it fit properly. So, I'm wondering what kind of wool alternatives you are familiar with that will hold it's shape and fit properly. It has to have a bit of "give" so his feet can breathe. Oh, and it has to be white. He suffers from athlete's foot, and can't wear colors. Thanks for whatever direction you can give.

I made the little guy in Oliver Twist variegated thread (slightly larger than size 80) in two shades of mostly turquoise, with the darker, bluer thread on the outside chains.

The other alteration was missing the right picot to start attaching the wing, so the dragon looks a little different, but not much.

When I started tatting last year, I had no idea the joins we're going to be the most challenging part! :)

I'm working on the Alexandra pattern from "Tatting Patterns" by Lyn Morton, and trying to join two medallions together to make a table topper similar to the "mat" depicted in the book. The second medallion needs to join in the midst of a chain to a picot on a chain on the completed medallion, so there will be one "above" and one "below". I hope that was a clear enough description...

A link to a video would be really great, because I have a hard time figuring out diagrams.

Thanks so much!

Hi everyone
some of you will remember my search for a pattern that i had seen in one of my books. We after searching the internet i found it believe it not even though it is public domain material it is being sold. My first reaction was to buy it. but after having problem with setting up a pay pal account i had a cooling off period.

It was then that i decided that it is wrong to make a profit on public domain material. So i tried making it and succeeded so i have written the pattern down and am now offering it free of charge. but i need people to test the pattern for me to see if my written instructions are correct. It is in PDF format attached to this post if i have done it right:blush:

In my youth when I first learned to tat, I remember hop scotching with my new “tosser”. All my little girlfriends wanted one too, so I made a few of them. That was my very first tatting. A tosser is that object you throw out onto a square and hop to, pick up and go back. lol (For any of you who never learned to “hop scotch”). Mine was a tatted clover with a ball chain attached to it for weight.

I made little doily's for my tea set then and when I was a teenager I made little bags and sachet’s from tatting. I made edgings and put them on my socks and blouses. When grown, I made some jewelry and bigger doily's and loads of bookmarks, all to be given away.

Now in my later years, I tend toward the simple bits of tatting. I kept a stash of butterflies I made with end threads and still pop one into a hand written letter or card. I don’t concentrate like I used to, so I quit complex patterns. And projects that take too much time, I save for the winter time.

I seem to like the very simple and instant or nearly instant gratification with tatting. I’ve moved to yarn instead of thread for the most part, I’ve re-examined what is simple and what I can create with “simple” tatting.

So tatting for me at this stage of life, has been gracious and kind. My eyesight from years and years of close small work, now enjoy bigger. Even my beadwork has gone to bigger beads. Tatting stayed with me all my life and gave me many moments of satisfaction in creating beautiful delicate things. It moved with me as I grew older and still brings me moments of joy.

I don’t tat like I used to. And that’s fine. I find myself, enjoying the tatting of other’s as much as I did my own in the day.

Being here and apart of this wonderful large community of tatters, gives me a daily dose of tatted treasures, and for that, I’m very grateful.

I spent about two hours teaching a friend to tat this afternoon. She is having great difficulty making her fingers do what her brain understands. Not sure what the problem is there, but she is tenacious, so I think she will eventually get it. We used two colours thread and she practiced the first half of the DS over and over. Sometimes it worked. Eventually, I had her practice both halves of the DS, but that didn't improve things at all. We're going to have lunch together after Church tomorrow, and hopefully do some more work. She really wants to do this. Oh, one more thing. I started her off using the slip and slide technique that I've always used, but she had so much trouble with that, I showed her Karen Cabrera's sewing machine method. Then she finally understood the basic construction of the DS. It's funny. I've taught one little girl who did perfect rings and chains after watching me once - literally. Then there have been others who seemed "all thumbs" and took a few days. This friend, though, has been working on it off and on since last August! Like I said, she is tenacious, but she has very little time to devote to tatting.
Thanks for letting me share. I felt pretty frustrated, but there's really no reason for me to feel that way. My friend laughs at her mistakes, tells me what she's done wrong, and gamely presses on.

My husband and I and some friends have been out bush, someplaces being quite remote, having nothing more than fireplaces where we could have an evening fire to keep the bugs away and sit and watch for satelites, falling stars.
Generally enjoying the peace and quiet. This is the only time I just sit and enjoy! to just sit at any other time is a waste of time for me.
While we travel in the car I crochet rugs and when sitting enjoying the scenery I have been practicing my tatting, by doing motifs, bookmarks for the 25 motif challenge.I have added photos to my tatting album.
I have posted some photos on my blog if you want to have a look.Probably wont be log on again for a couple of weeks as we wont have any internet where we are going.

After paying insane amounts ($6+ for that tiny cube almost made me think twice about buying it because I could get a shuttle and ball of Lizbeth instead) for those tiny blue cubes, I was elated to see Thread Heaven in a recent Atlanta Thread & Supply / WAWAK Sewing Supply catalog:

http://www.wawak.com/products/product.cfm?pID=4465
http://www.wawak.com/atlantathread/

Buying up to 3 it's only $2.49 a cube, but if you buy 4 or more, it's $2.19. Granted, that's a lot of TH, but at that price I'm considering ordering a couple because I keep losing mine.

Here is the end of Norma Benporath's "sandwich tray d'oyley" from 1936

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/23389006?

The little two ring piece at the bottom left is supposed to join the motifs along the bottom to help sew it to the cloth. The instructions read

"Pairs of picot rings are worked to straighten the inner edge of the lace... join to 3rd p of 2nd last chain on lower inner right side of left-hand medallion"

I would have thought this refers to the chains that are closest to where the little piece is placed in the photo but, obviously, it doesn't fit there! It does (sort of) fit between the next chains up but this doesn't really straighten up the edge.

2 questions to ask the forum:

1. how would you interpret the instructions?
2. what do you think would be the best way to "straighten up the edge"

(Of course, you can comment on other things, too!!)

I finished my hearts 70 of them. Now I think I read to use half glue and half water to stiffen the ones that will go on picks over the bouquets.

I tried dunking them in the glue/water mixture, but must have been too much as all the picots and rings filled up with glue. I settled for brushing the glue on both sides making sure the rings and picots were not filled. Laid the brushed hearts___my test group___ out to dry on plastic.

If this doesn't work out tell me how you stiffen tatting that needs to be stiff. Is 50/50 glue water enough? I've never stiffened anything before.

I haven't been tatting long, a couple of months, and I'm basically learning from this site and youtube videos.

So I know I"m new and I'm really trying to figure this pattern out, so far I"ve been doing well... but now... I"m stuck. The pattern is Emmy Leibert fig. 37 bk1 pg2 - reprint pg 18. PAttern rewrite by Jennifer Williams... will have to dig around for the link. I've done well but now I"m confused.

I just finished "mock picot to climb out then large cloverleaf ring is a split rin: 6-5/1+6-5 RW"

Now it says

"SH2 5+5-5-5 RW
Split ring: 5+5/5-5; repeat once.
Clover leafe large ring; 5+6+1+6-5, Split ring; 5+5/5-5; repeat once"

I'm confused on how this attaches to the previous round and which way I'm supposed to start. the whole SH2 part throws me off and I can't see where in the diagram where it would fit in either... Gee I hope I'm being clear... anyone able to help?

I received a little catalog from Annie's Attic today, and there was an entire page dedicated to tatting! They featured Marilee Rockley's Tatted Jewelry book, the Learn to Tat book with the DVD--both of which have been heavily featured lately--BUT they also listed two older books now available as PDF downloads--The Big Book of Tatting and The Ultimate Book of Tatted Doilies! I was just so excited to see so much tatting at a "big" shop like Annie's Attic. I also bought the two downloads. I already have the Tatted Jewelry book, and I know how to tat...though maybe I should buy that book for lending out.

Link to a search for "tatting" results on the website: http://www.anniesattic.com/list.html?criteria=tatting

Also, I'm a member of CGOA (Crochet Guild of America) and we get a discount from Annie's Attic...if you're a member, don't forget to take your discount. Saved me $2.99 on the two books. Not to be sneezed at. That will almost pay for a ball of Lizbeth. ;)

My daughter was given some vintage tatting thread in balls. The manufacturer card reads: "J&P Coats Tatting-Crochet 60 yds boilfast with red chainlink around the outside of the card. On the other side of the card visible by looking through the ball is "color 18". The thread is one of a dozen or so balls she got. They belonged to an elderly family member who passed and they wanted someone to have them who would use them properly. The thread seems to be somewhat brittle and breaks easily. Is there any hope for this thread? My daughter was hoping to tat with it.

I only changed the beading pattern and this is how I did it.

The brooch is essentially a chain rose with 8 petals. Each row adds another bead to each segment in the row.

Gina originally only specified beads on the core thread (for beginners) but I did it a different way altogether.

Each segment of a row is worked 2 DS, 1st half DS, slide a bead from the ball, 2nd half DS, slide a bead from the core thread. The count of beads from Gina's pattern gets beads from the ball thread before, in between and after the specified number of core beads are worked. Essentially the ball thread beads are worked in the middle of a normal DS.

BB = Ball thread bead and CB = Core thread bead
1st is the first half of a DS, 2nd is the second half of a DS

Row 1 segment = 2 DS, 1st BB 2nd, CB, 1st BB 2nd, 2 DS Lock join

Increase 1 BB and 1 CB for each added row.

Since the Ball Beads have some thread surrounding them and there is always one more Ball Bead than the originally specified Core Bead, this beading pattern automatically makes curves.

I went to Tat-a-Renda's site (as was suggested on an earlier post) but I still can't get it. I get the concept, but something is wrong. Can someone help?

I just read the pattern for the Tatted heart (valentine)w from "Free tatting patterns" I like the design, but I'm confused. For each little flower inside the heart there are numbers for the sequence of each petal. But, on each flower there is one number that's on there twice. On the first one, the number 2 is there twice. On the second flower there are two 6's. And on the third flower there are two 11's.
I understand the rest of it. But what am I doing when there are two of the same number?
The site is http://free-tatting.com/?cat=21

For a long time I thought I could never design my own pattern, and wondered how the designers mande new patterns. Then some years ago and with a good...

For a long time I thought I could never design my own pattern, and wondered how the designers mande new patterns. Then some years ago and with a good help from Sharon's Design Challenge and Design Class I started designing.

Now I want to share some of the design process with you to show those of you who are not designing yet, that it is not a too difficult task

First example: I have been thinking on making a small blue poppy as a fundraiser for the local Botanical Garden - which is famous for growing blue poppies at sea level (being at 70 degrees norht helps). I was aiming for a motif that could be used as an earring and I wanted rather solid petals. I have been using the Catherine Wheel Join a lot lately, and realized I could use it for the poppy. Adding some beads at the centre, I started playing with stitch numer and size. The same kind of ring as Anitra Stone uses for her birds made a nice bud and ancor for encapsulation which I did to hide ends. One leaf can be joined to an earring, the other is a single shuttle earring made to hide the final end.

Without the Catherine Wheel Join, I would still be pondering on this.

Now I'll need to talk to the Friends of the Garden and then make more if they want me to.

Second example: I - or rather my Mum - needed a new runner to replace the runner she got for Christmas a while ago. I wanted something using squares and quick to make. I used a square of split rings that I made when reconstructing an old pattern. I wanted to fill it using the tradiotional wheel of rings pattern that I used with my Christnas hearts, but needed to adjust it some as the space was a bit cramped.

The squares alone was too small so I added wedges. I needed to make some tests on the wedges before getting what I wanted. The larger wedge voud hide the squares and the smaller wedges had too many picots.

By going for the smaller wedges and removing some picots - and tattig for a while - I got a new runner for my Mum. Now she can save the Christmas Hearts runner for Christmas

This design was rather straight forward using pattern-items I already knew, and this is how designing often is. Using what you know to make something new.

Now, the later design needs to be tested using colours - doesn't it? Also; I need to make a wider version with two or more rows of squares and I need a motif between the squares as the wedges would not fit except for the ecges ...

This is the danger of designing: new ideas keeps derailing you.

As you can see, I stuck my bobbin on the eraser shaft (which spins). The orange you see is just a small sliver of a jar lid gripper that I wedged in the hole of my bobbin so that the eraser would actually grip it.

I have actually tried this trick a couple of times and it works really well as long as you hold the thread very close to the bobbin as it winds. If you hold the thread more than an inch away from the bobbin, it will jump off the bobbin and either wind around the eraser or unravel the thread depending on which way it jumps.

Using this method, you can wind a bobbin in less than ten seconds. I'm just wondering if this is as good an idea as it seems. Am I likely to experience any issues down the road? Any major issues that is. I can deal with extra twist in the thread.

I don't know if you all are familiar yet with Pinterest, but it's a really cool site to organize your tatting. We all have our "Favorites" tool bar with all our tatting patterns sites. The only thing wrong with that is, I forget which site has the pattern I'm looking for.
Well, Pinterest solves that problem because it post the picture of the pattern and the website it's from. You can also "Repin" something from someone else "Board" to one of your "Boards".
Here is the link to get to my Pinterest...click on the "Tatting Patterns" to look through the patterns. Unfortunately, Pinterest doesn't find all of my favorite patterns, so I couldn't "Pin" all of my favorites.
:w00t:
I thought of this while getting ready for my trip to Minnesota. We were at the dollar store getting little containers for traveling and I bought some small silicone pony tail holders (500 for $1). I am prewinding different colors onto bobbins and placing one of these over the bobbin. I don't have to carry a big bag with balls of thread, they stay in place really well on metal and plastic bobbins, and 2 can even be wound CTM if you want to. This then takes up less space when traveling and you can take many colors. I am taking the LaCossette shuttles and Pop A Bobbin shuttles with me and have 20 bobbins wound so far with different colors. This way if I am staying with someone and want to make them a little something they can choose the color they want it to be in.

On page 13 of Inga Madsen's "Tatted Animals" is a cute kitty. I've seen him tatted up someplace else, but I don't recall whose album. Inspired by Handy Hands invitation, I decided to use the autumn leaves varigated thread and make her a calico cat. Here's where my plan went "tilt". I finished the leg- hip ring-chain wreath starting at "A" in the lower left, then did the leg/foot along the bottom, to where it curls back to the hip "ring-chain wreath" and comes to a dead end at a T. Now where? Cut and tie? Ok, on to part B, which is the head, another ring-chain wreath. Returning to B you go where next??? Inga has Down?? Looks like there's a chain missing. and another T. There are three rings with a 4 in the center The rings with arrows in both directions look like they might mean split rings or split chains, but no dashed or dotted lines. You can't get to the kitty's right leg without a split ring or two. After the toes, its back up to the chin --two chains and other T split chain and you can do the left front leg. Last question for the moment. Should I have done the eyes and nose before the rest of the head?:sad::cry:

The specific pattern I want to try is the Wintery Tree by Tat-Man. I made some progress on it, but what I was doing seemed much more complicated than it needed to be. I had a core thread, an "A" thread, and the "B" thread I was working from the ball. I had my needle on the core thread for the pearl chain and would move it to the "A" thread to make the rings. Is that right?

The top two things in the picture are practice pieces and then the big butterfly and small one. I have to try and get my stitch sizes even. I am done for the day. Need to work on somethings that don't require so much thinking. I will tackle another practice piece tomorrow. All feed back is welcome, good or bad. I need a glass of wine now.:w00t:

A few weeks ago we were in the computerlessons for seniors. We were talking about your hobbies and what you could find on internet. (A lot of women dont know what to do with a computer, thats why I talk about it). We all know better. This week came a woman with a big bag. She told me her mother passed away and she had a lot of lace-doilies. Nobody in the family wanted them. She gave them all to me. At home I looked what she gave me and I was very happy. Nine doilies were tatted, two were knitted and the rest (about 20) were crochet from 10 to about 60 cm.
This tatting I liked very much, with the Josefine-chains in the middle and outsite.

I finally got started practicing last night. :w00t: I got the ds down and can do it pretty quick, but my picots are not even, my joining is a real joke :thmbdn: and I've got to Learn the shorthand so I can stop looking back at the first few pages. I am going to work on it again today and hope to take some pics and start an album. Is needle tatting easier than shuttle tatting? I also get confused as my work turns and I think I join to the wrong side of the previous ring. Oh well, practice, practice, practice. I think I will love doing it once I learn.

I have seen time and time again the things that people do to protect the hook on their shuttles from "poking through" their tatting bag.
My simple solution is I bought a small package of plastic earring backs and slide one onto each hook tip until just before it goes all the way through. I have never had one poke through anything. And if I am using 2 shuttles with hooks I will use one and give a quick switch when changing shuttles so they don't catch on my clothes or my tatting. The only free hook is the one on the shuttle I am tatting with. Be it small or big hook they just slide right on and off. I started this when my son found a few in an old house they were clearing to get it ready to sell. It works wonders and so easy too.

The little bit of tatting is Mary Konior's Convolvulus from her book Tatting in Lace
The thread is LadyShuttleMaker's HDT Plum Tickled size 100 and DMC Cordonnet White size 100
The 2 tops shuttles are from LaCossette's Etsy Shop
The 2 bottom are Pop A Bobbin shuttles from JaneEborall's Etsy Shop

Inspired by Angeleyes and DreaminSymmetry's versions of TotusMel's fleurette necklace, I decided to have another go at needle tatting and attempt this necklace too. I don't like using size 10 with shuttles and I thought it might be easier with a needle.

I am completely inexperienced with needle tatting and I have a question for those in the know: why is it that the thread twists so much when I pull it through (especially on those long spiral chains)? I find this quite difficult to manage and end up in a tangle of threads which I find slightly discouraging! HELP!

I'm still pleased with how the necklace turned out but I would like to know how to do it more easily... I thought maybe it was the thread but I tried it both with Lizbeth and DMC and had the same problem. The thread coming off the ball got really twisted too as I worked and I kept having to stop to untwist it - is that normal?

Thanks for your help!

I aim to make a doily, preferably of my own design. The last ring wasn't joined properly to the first - I hid the thread inside the last rather than the first ring oops!

Well not showing off my tatting yet but I am bragging a bit because I reached a major goal I set for myself regarding tatting. I have completed Master Phase III with Tatters Across Time. It was a goal I had set for myself a few years back and I finally made it through all three phases. It was a great way to learn lots of different techniques and have completed projects to show for it. I received helpful feedback on each project to help me improve my skill. I encourage anyone interested to check into it: http://www.tattersacrosstime.org/

Now onto some playful endeavors.

I am currently working a 3D skunk. I'm basing it on Gary Houtz Possum pattern and Randy Houtz Hedgehog pattern (the Shuttle Brothers). I'm combining parts of each to make my skunk. I have finished his head and front legs and am into the middle body now.

After that I hope to complete a collage frame and fill all the compartments with different types of leaves in all colors. I had completed some them before working on the T.A.T. program but it fell by the wayside while I worked on that.

Once these are complete I will post pictures.

Good morning everyone. I just joined a flew days ago, and wanted to say that yesterday (with my 40% off coupon I bought the needle tatting book that comes with the needles and some yarn. I can't wait to get started. I took everyones advice about what size thread to get. Since I do a lot of hand embroidery and punch needle I have lots of DMC and pearl cottons, bit got some size 10 and 20. Also bought one Lizbeth since they were on sale. I have a needle punch piece to finish, which I hope to do today, and then I can start to learn needle tatting. Am hoping to be good enough to make some ornies and things to put on Christmas cards. I will start an album as soon as I make something to show. Thanks to all that welcomed me, and for the advice you have given. I'm sure I will have a hundred more questions.
