Beeton’s Book of Needlework was originally published in Great Britain in 1870 by Ward, Lock and Tyler.
Modernisation of original instructions by Kersti Anear.
Using the continuous thread method and 2 shuttles:
1st shuttle:
1st ring: 10 ds, 1 picot, 10 ds, close.
2nd ring: Close to last ring, work 10 ds 1 picot, 10 ds; close.
2nd shuttle:
Chain: 12 ds, 1 picot, 4 ds; join to picot of 2nd ring, 4 ds, 1 picot, 12 ds.
1st shuttle:
3rd ring: 10 ds, join to picot of 2nd ring–the same as that to which the chain has been fastened-
-10 ds; close.
4th ring: Close to last ring, work 10 ds, join to picot of 1st ring, 10 ds, close.
The pattern is now complete. Repeat from beginning, taking care that the next ring be close to the last.
Crochet a heading with the same cotton, working 4 chain, 1 double into the picot of chain thread, 6 chain, 1 double into the next picot. Repeat.
