This edging found in Novelty Tatting and Maltese Crochet Book No. 6. published by Novelty Art Studios in approx 1915 has a medieval feel to it. Many thanks to Judy who scanned these pages in to share with us all.

I tried tatting this, it needs a few things changed.
the pattern reads like this…
CTM
ch 4 – 8
* r 15 – 15
ch 8 – 3 – 3 – 8 + (to ring picot)
clover : 3 rings of 8 – 8
ch 8 – 3 – 3 – 8 + (to base of ring)
ch 8 – 8 – 8
repeat from * to make edging….
I found this is a pretty unstable way. instead I tried:
VSP = very small picot
CTM with 2 shuttles
ch 4 – 8
*r 15 – 15
ch 8 – 3 – 3 – 5 VSP 3 +
clover (using top shuttle): r 3 + 5 – 7 VSP 1
r 1 +7 – 7 VSP 1
r 1 + 7 – 5 VSP 3
Ch 3 + 5 – 3 – 3 – 8
ch 8 – 8 – 8
