I would rather know how to add a second color thread to the middle of a project. I am trying to do a shuttle tatting project following a pattern which says to make 4 or 5 Single Shuttle Split rings which is fine, however it then says to make some split rings using 2 different color threads. Making the split rings is not the problem that is the easy part, the part I am having trouble with is and sorry if I make it sound confusing or more confusing than it needs to be, with the addition of the 2nd colored thread. If I add the second shuttle with the 2nd color at the begining before I begin my project, then when I want to start tatting with it (the 2nd color), it will create a long thread or there will be a long unused thread from where it was originally joined to where I first started using it. So I thought I could just hide the threafrom the second shuttle under the work with the first shuttle for the begining of my project. Unfortunatly that was not easy and did not work at all, especially with the necessary flip. So, I then though I would just add it when I needed it to the middle of the project. Unfortunately that didn't prove to be any easier for me. Especially since the begining part of the pattern I am making is made with Single Shuttle Split Rings and not just regular rings. So now I would really like for someone to help me with this and tell me how be able to use the second shuttle with a different color thread than shuttle one or how to complete the pattern using the second color thread or how to add it to the middle of the project. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

If you are adding the second color of thread when you start making split rings, tat over the tail of the new thread in the first half of the split ring, then work the second half of the split ring with the new thread.

I always start new thread by tatting over tails. I got really good at this because I am famous for mucking up the beginning of a project, cut the boo boo off and start with tatting over tails. My motto is : 2 and only 2 ends to finish!
