I remember doing just that when I first dabbled in designing tatting. I still have the template that I used.
If you want to make rounds, squares or 6-sided motifs, you can draw them on polar graph paper, like this -

I printed my polar graph paper from the internet. Search for 'polar graph paper'. I don't use the template anymore since I started drawing on the computer, but I still use the polar graph paper for my sketches. I use the 12-spoke polar graph for snowflakes, 8-spoke for squares and rounds and 10-spoke for stars. In fact, the polar graph paper helps me in deciding on stitch counts for the rings and chains when I tat up the designs.

Using the templates is much faster for me now than the computer. Since I retired I can't afford to buy a really good program that will let me make and save "elements" such as a 4-4-4-4 ring and position them quickly where ever and at whatever angle I want them on the page.
Judy - go take a look at Serif DrawPlus - there is a free version and you can save bits and pieces for later use.

I make bobbinlacepatterns with the computer in basic with a plotter since long time ago. I have to write one repeat of a pattern in X and Y, then use my basicprogram. That cost most of the time I use. After that you can draw bigger and smaller en with the right instructions make it round too, with every radius and how much repats you want to have. The problem now is, that I have to use DOS, without windows and other stuff. The new computers have no special printer-ports like I need.I have two very old computers saved for this work. I never made tattingpatterns, but it must be possible
I love drawing and graphing on the computer but I also hand sketch a lot too. I used used standard graph paper but never the polar graph paper or this type of ruler; gonna go get them right away this weekend.
This is one of those *boink*!* on the forehead moments as I wonder why I didn't think of this, since I have used shape templates for scrapbooking, DUH
i like your ideas, both designing on graph paper (kity2710) and on polar graph paper (jon). i must go find some to try. so far, i'd only been doodling on a little notebook without proper scientific calculations involved whenever an idea struck. :)

Valerie and all,
I download the polar graph papers that I use from this site, http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/polar/
You can basically format your own graph paper by filling the details such as the paper size, number of concentric circles and the number of spokes that you want. I have created a few different sizes and downloaded the format to my computer so that I don't have to go online to print it the next time I need to use one.
